Allows for the creation of linked clone VM pools

View allows for the creation of linked clone VM pools and allows for easy administration of those pools. The automated tasks allow administrators to provision, refresh pools during off hours to keep the pools clean. View administrator is an easy tool to configure the servers in the environmnet. The ability to assign thin apps to a VM or pools of VMs in vmware view is an easy way to deploy applications to users.

From my point of view, Horizon View has three main pros: first pro is the new HTML5 client with Blast, which allows Horizon to deliver full desktops to users' browsers and it has a touchscreen interface. Second pro is that the platform uses space efficiently through the SE Sparse disk format and provides native platform graphics processing unit support for 3D graphics acceleration. Third pro is that it features AppShift technology, which introduces gestures and UI changes that make it easier to use Windows and Windows desktop applications on touch-based devices and support for the Nvidia Virtual Graphics Platform and Microsoft Lync communicator.

Being able to have access to local hardware is valuable, but if you don't have optimal switching and routing, it can get kind of laggy
Pros and Cons
  • "The local hardware pass-throughs are valuable. I like being able to have access to local hardware."
  • "Sometimes, the protocol itself gets a bit laggy. If you have less than optimal switching and routing, it can get kind of laggy."

What is most valuable?

The local hardware pass-throughs are valuable. I like being able to have access to local hardware.

What needs improvement?

Sometimes, the protocol itself gets a bit laggy. If you have less than optimal switching and routing, it can get kind of laggy.

I don't know if it already has such a feature or whether it is doable, but it would be good to be able to use a thumb drive or something else or map a local directory as a drive to the VM.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for about two years. I am currently using its previous version.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Its scalability is good enough.

How are customer service and technical support?

I don't use tech support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I fell in on it. We already had the license when I started working here.

How was the initial setup?

Somebody else does the setup. I just do the endpoint.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise making sure that you have a fast enough backbone. You can't go around using the cheapest available tiny switches because it is just not going to work for you.

I would give it a solid seven out of 10. I don't give a 10 very often.

We have been using VMware Horizon View for approximately five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We have a stable environment right now and haven't needed to expand our usage. We have approximately 500 users.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support has been responsive.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward, although customization is a little kludgey.

What about the implementation team?

We deployed using an in-house team.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Deploying desktops without needing access to the hardware is very helpful, but different client versions can be problematic.

What is most valuable?

  • Control
  • Consolidated way of doing updates
  • Security

How has it helped my organization?

We had to deal with re-imaging hard drives and managing PCs, so having images and desktops to deploy wherever people are without the hardware was really helpful.

What needs improvement?

I think that simplifying cross-platform use on different devices could be better. Different client versions sometimes don’t work quite as well.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It’s been great – we haven’t had too many issues at all.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Pretty good – we're a pretty small organization, and we have a few hundred desktops but it's been great for what we do.

How are customer service and technical support?

It’s been good – no complaints at all.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Nope – we went from straight desktops to virtualization.

How was the initial setup?

It’s a little complex, we missed the initial deployment. They were trying to get the most out of the resources on the servers and it undercut what some users needed.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

When choosing VMware, we looked at the cost, and value. If they meet what we need, support is important as well. You should get a demo version and try it – see what it actually does before you buy it. I'd rather see it kick the tires than hear what other people have to say.

I have also been implementing VDI enables workstations do not need more hardware resources on personal computers, but it is true that there will be many complex issues on the server side requires investment and research and development successfully as: Grid GPU, out internet network, simultaneous access 4K Media content, high IOPS Storage with speed, load level of each VM Host for multiple operators simultaneously, even for application visualization Cloud right...

Simple to install, but the technical support needs improvement
Pros and Cons
  • "VMware Horizon View is a stable solution."
  • "Technical support could be better and faster."

What is our primary use case?

We are providers and we provide solutions to our clients.

We are using it for Virtual Desktop, Application Virtualization, Graphics, AutoCAD Virtualization, Graphics Virtualization, Workstation, and Graphic Power.

What needs improvement?

Technical support could be better and faster.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using VMware Horizon View in customers' IT infrastructures for approximately five, or six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

VMware Horizon View is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

VMware Horizon View is a scalable product.

We have four customers who use this solution.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support could be faster.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have experience with Virtual Desktop Infrastructures as well as Application Virtualization.

We also use Citrix Virtual Desktops.

How was the initial setup?

Colleagues of mine are implementing the software. I am the team leader for the modern workplace. It is simple to install, according to my colleagues.

We have a two-person team to maintain this solution. Both are architects, but we only need one architect and an engineer.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Customers pay a licensing fee.

What other advice do I have?

I would suggest doing a proof of concept.

I would rate VMware Horizon View a six out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

It allows us to spin up desktops and set multiple images quickly, although it lacks enough standardized instructions and rules.

Valuable Features:

The ability to spin up desktops as quickly as possible. You just build one image and then set multiple images and be ready quickly.

Improvements to My Organization:

If you have a training session, you can spin up more very quickly, which helps in the training ability for end-users.

Room for Improvement:

I wish there were more standardized instructions and rules. There are too many gotchas.

Stability Issues:

We're moving to 6.1 from 5.x, so far it's been good. An older version was unstable, but that was before I got there.

Scalability Issues:

There's some little gotchas with moving some up, and you can only have so many VMs, so it does have limitations.

Initial Setup:

It’s a little advanced because more gotchas (certificates, different servers in different order).

Other Advice:

Make sure you know the product, and do a POC first.
