What is Scale Computing HC3?

HC3 is an appliance-based hyperconverged infrastructure solution. HC3 combines servers, storage, virtualization, and backup/disaster recovery into a single appliance. This hyperconvergence of technologies radically simplifies IT infrastructure making it easier to implement and manage and significantly reduces the total cost of ownership of infrastructure. The HC3 hyperconverged appliance approach allows seamless, non-disruptive infrastructure scale out and automated, non-disruptive software and firmware updates. Our customers choose HC3 to reduce complexity and cost from IT infrastructure so they can focus their IT administration on improving applications and process rather than managing and maintaining complex infrastructure.

Fast with excellent stability and fantastic technical support
    Pros and Cons
    • "The solution is scalable."
    • "Scale HC3 improvements would involve literally fixing up the replication."

    What is most valuable?

    Technical support is great.

Scale shows you the network switches already configured, which is better than Nutanix, where you really have to have someone who is doing the networking properly and double-checking all your network configurations within Nutanix.

    The solution is scalable.

    The stability is excellent.

The solution is fast. For example, Nutanix reads and writes are slower than Scale.

    What needs improvement?

Scale HC3 improvements would involve literally fixing up the replication. It's the Holy Trinity of snapshot, replication, and bandwidth monitoring. All three must be aligned.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've dealt with the solution for six months or so at this point. It hasn't been that long. I've used it for less than a year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is quite stable. It's rock solid. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. it's quite reliable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is very good. If you need to expand it, you can.

In Scale, with scaling, there's a different way of scaling in Scale than in Nutanix. With Nutanix if you were going to be doing new mass amounts of machines, meaning you were going to do 1,000 machines, 2000 machines, I would not recommend Scale. Scale limits the cluster nodes to eight nodes. You literally have to put on servers and you have to balance your servers off on the system.

How are customer service and support?

While Nutanix support is good, Scale tech support responds faster and acts faster. We are quite satisfied with them overall.

Scale support is 100% American-based, which is great in terms of language and time zones.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have both Nutanix and Scale, which are two competitors. Scale does some things better than Nutanix. Nutanix does some things better than Scale. That's why we use both.

    How was the initial setup?

I have a staff of two. I have three others on my staff right now that currently know the system. They might only deal with it half an hour a week. The maintenance is minimal. It's pretty self-repairing.

It literally takes maybe two hours to get them fully acquainted with either system. Nutanix is harder to restore. The problem with Nutanix is when you want to restore data and you only want to restore selected data, much more tedious. Where Scale, it's a simple GUI and takes seconds.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate Scale at an eight out of ten.

Scale has major improvements that they need to fix up. However, it is pretty good in terms of capability and scalability.

High availability, helpful support, and better than traditional servers
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature of Scale Computing HC3 is if one of the devices fails, you won't even notice, the service maintains operation. The customers don't have to waste two, or three days on delays. Additionally, you do not have to waste time with recovery software, it is a lot easier."
    • "Scale Computing HC3 said in an announcement they were going to integrate with a backup service which would be good. If they could do this it would be beneficial."

What is our primary use case?

Scale Computing HC3 is used by customers to install their software, such as SAGE Computer, Time Clock solutions, and QuickBooks. It's similar to a normal server with Windows and all the users have access. For example, you install a Windows server, and from then on it works the same as any server in the market.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Scale Computing HC3 is if one of the devices fails, you won't even notice, the service maintains operation. The customers don't have to waste two, or three days on delays. Additionally, you do not have to waste time with recovery software, it is a lot easier.

    What needs improvement?

Scale Computing HC3 said in an announcement they were going to integrate with a backup service which would be good. If they could do this it would be beneficial.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Scale Computing HC3 for approximately one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Scale Computing HC3 has been stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of Scale Computing HC3 has been good.

We have approximately seven people using the solution in my company.

How are customer service and support?

The support from Scale Computing HC3 has been good. However, I do not need to contact them often because once the server is running it is operating independently and does not need support.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I pay for Scale Computing HC3 and it includes customer service for one year. We paid for an additional year for customer service but that includes the updates and everything for the software. Additionally, the licensing is for Windows, which is the same for everybody.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise others they should use this solution instead of traditional servers because it's safer, and better for the company. You don't have to rely on complicated setups, if one of the parts goes down, it keeps working. This aspect is the best for companies that don't want to waste time.

Scale Computing HC3 should improve its marketing.

I rate Scale Computing HC3 a nine out of ten.

The solution is user-friendly, stable, and easy to deploy
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature of the solution is the nice GUI."
    • "The snapshot technology takes up 500 times more space compared to other solutions."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case is to create our own cloud and virtualization out of the cloud.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of the solution is the nice GUI. The solution has a lot of user-friendly features.

    What needs improvement?

The snapshot technology takes up 500 times more space compared to other solutions. The snapshots are working on the byte level and not the bit level.

The solution has three detriments, there is no performance, we can't see how much CPU each node is using, and we have no technical data on anything that happened on the server. Additionally, replication is also lacking and does not work well, partially to the fact of the snapshot technology.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for a year and a half.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable. I give the stability a nine out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I give the scalability a six out of ten.

Scale Computing HC3 has limitations because it can only support eight nodes per cluster. If we need to do more, we have to add more clusters. Nutanix, on the other hand, can grow very large.

    How was the initial setup?

The setup is very good. The solution is very easy to use. The deployment takes less than one day and only requires one person.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I give the pricing a nine out of ten.

What other advice do I have?

I give the solution a six out of ten.

We have three administrators managing the solution.

New users should be aware of the snapshot and replication problems.

We have over 2000 people that are supported by the solution.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

What is our primary use case?

My primary use is for small-end businesses with fewer than thirty VMs.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable features are the appliance-type feel and that you don't need additional licenses as everything is built-in.

    What needs improvement?

The product struggles to cope with bigger workloads. In the next release, I'd like some backup solutions to be added.
