What is our primary use case?
The usual use cases for Juniper SRX Series Firewall that I work with mostly are for enterprise solutions, which include headquarter and branches security. They use IPsec tunnels for secure data transmission. Additionally, I work with this project for ISPs where it serves as a CGNAT solution for big providers and mobile operators. They typically utilize next-generation firewall functions such as anti-spam, IPS, IDS functions, and web filtering, for example, antivirus. Usually, Juniper SRX Series Firewall is used in a cluster configuration, where two boxes operate as one high availability solution.
What is most valuable?
Regarding the features or capabilities of Juniper SRX Series Firewall that I have found the most valuable and useful, IPsec tunnels are very popular functions. Also, the IPS/IDS functionality is used very often. It all depends on customer requirements because different customers have different needs, but these functions I have utilized frequently.
Juniper SRX Series Firewall has built-in functionality in its Junos operating system to use automation scripts, which allow for the automation of processes to deploy and maintain Juniper SRX Series Firewall. It is also a very good solution to use Security Director when you have many Juniper SRX Series Firewall boxes in your network. I prefer CLI; if you do not have so many Juniper SRX Series Firewall boxes, it is good to use CLI because Juniper Junos allows you to save different configurations and you can always roll back to a previous configuration if a new configuration does not work as expected.
What needs improvement?
I think Juniper SRX Series Firewall could be improved or enhanced because maybe a year or two ago, Juniper began producing new boxes such as SRX 1600, SRX 2300, and SRX 4300 and 4700, which are excellent products. They are only one unit high but have very good performance and a lot of different ports, supporting from 1 gig to 100 gig ports. Juniper also has series SRX 300, but it is an old firewall and not very powerful. I believe that maybe in a year, they will transition to another series, such as SRX 400. However, the functionality of Juniper SRX Series Firewall remains the same. The differences involve performance, quality, number of ports, and types of ports in different models of Juniper SRX Series Firewall.
For how long have I used the solution?
I work for a distributor company as a Juniper consultant, and I have been working with Juniper SRX Series Firewall for maybe 10 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I find Juniper SRX Series Firewall to be a reliable solution. I have configured it for many customers, and they have operated for more than a year without any problems. Therefore, I consider Juniper to be one of the more reliable firewalls.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I believe the scalability of Juniper SRX Series Firewall is good for mid-range and upper-range firewalls, but the branch models are not very scalable. This could be a recommendation for Juniper to provide additional solutions or models for branch firewalls. Currently, we can use a maximum of two firewalls in a cluster setup, where one box is active and the other is a backup. In comparison, I know Check Point has a solution that allows connecting several boxes for high availability or increased power.
How are customer service and support?
Regarding my satisfaction with Juniper SRX's technical support, I find it varies. Depending on the case, the Juniper technical center sometimes resolves issues quickly, while in other situations, we find ourselves having to resolve the issue independently.
How was the initial setup?
For the usual initial setup process with Juniper SRX Series Firewall, if we use a cloud management solution, we do not need to configure all boxes directly and manually because Juniper supports zero trust or zero install solutions. You simply connect the firewall to the internet, and then in the cloud management platform, you use different templates. Juniper SRX Series Firewall obtains all configurations from the management platform, making this process very easy and fast. It requires having a competent network or security engineer to manage effectively.
What other advice do I have?
The role-based control feature supported by Juniper SRX Series Firewall is usually a good solution, especially when using another database server or RADIUS server for authenticating different users. We can manage roles for users, utilizing group management roles.
For application visibility on Juniper SRX Series Firewall, we need a special license. Juniper supports adding different applications manually, but you can also use a ready database of all popular applications when licensed, with this database being updated automatically. You can utilize these different applications in various policies for firewalling, allowing access or blocking at the user-based level or across the entire network between subnets, making it very flexible.
Regarding the pricing of Juniper SRX Series Firewall, I think the cost is comparable to Cisco, Check Point, and Palo Alto, but it is very difficult for Juniper to compete with Fortinet. This vendor is very economical while maintaining good functionality for devices. Prices have been growing constantly every month, possibly due to RAM and chip costs. I believe the price is significant, but if you require a good security solution, it is a reasonable price.
The usual challenges I encounter with Juniper SRX Series Firewall include situations where customers do not read documentation. When they configure some functionality incorrectly, they face problems and ask me for help to troubleshoot and identify the issue. Everything is often traced back to the network security administrator's prior experience with other vendors, where different command syntax or approaches are utilized. Thus, it is advisable for users to read documentation thoroughly before configuring any functionality. It turns out that many requests I receive from customers stem from this issue, although it is not a big problem, rather a small inconvenience attributable to customer oversight. I would rate this product a 7 overall.
