Hornetsecurity Altaro VM Backup Reviews

We use it for VM backup and Office 365 backup.

I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy. It provides storage for Office 365, which is beneficial, and the deduplication technology is excellent, especially in optimizing storage capacity compared to others. In terms of support, there is absolutely no problem; they are great.

The solution needs multi-platform support as it is currently only available for VMware and Hyper-V. It also lacks support for physical servers and workstations. Additionally, they should add more platforms for VM backup.

I have used the solution for almost five to seven years.

I do not think stability is a problem.

When scaling workloads up or down, it is very simple and easy.

In terms of support, there is absolutely no problem.

In a VMware environment, it provides better return on investment.

The pricing and licensing cost is challenging since most competitors offer cheaper pricing, making it difficult to penetrate the market with the current pricing strategy.

We do not work with any other solutions of the same kind for disaster recovery or backup.

I can recommend Altaro only for specific use cases, not to everyone. I rate the solution as a product a five out of ten.

Our clients use Hornetsecurity primarily for backup purposes.

Two months ago, a client had a problem with hardware failure and relied on Altaro VM Backup for backup and recovery in their hybrid VM environment. They found the solution easy to configure and manage.

The most valuable feature of Altaro VM Backup is its ability to backup and restore various types of data, including Active Directory, application servers, and SQL Server databases. I have been working with Hornetsecurity Altaro VM Backup for five years.

I have had positive experiences with Altaro's customer service and technical support. While I mainly contact my account manager for validation of situations, the support provided by Altaro has been excellent. I would rate it ten out of ten for their support.

Altaro VM Backup is quite affordable in comparison to other products.

The main difference between Hornetsecurity Backup and other vendors is in its comprehensive feature set offered at a competitive price. Unlike other products that may offer different features as separate products, Hornetsecurity includes all necessary features in one package at the same price. This affordability is crucial, especially for SMB markets with limited budgets.

Deduplication technology in Altaro VM Backup improves storage efficiency by reducing redundant data, but its impact depends on the client's willingness to pay for additional services due to cost constraints.

Overall, I would rate Altaro VM Backup as a ten out of ten.

We have an on-premises backup with a cloud copy. We're a network integrator. We resell it.

It is an excellent product. It is easy to deploy, stable, and fast. Their support is excellent.

The yearly maintenance fee can be improved. It is high.

Basically, how it works is that you have a single local drive, and then you have a cloud backup. It'd be nice if you could rotate the single local backup drive. As of now, you can't.

I have been using this solution for probably four years.

It is very stable.

Their support is excellent.

It's easy to deploy. The first time, you deploy it in an hour, and after that, it probably takes 30 minutes, but it can vary.

Its yearly maintenance fee is fairly high for me to renew for upgrades and support.

It is really made for smaller deployments. It is for five or six VMs.

I would give it a nine out of 10.

We use Altaro as a VM backup solution for our clients. We utilize this for about five clients so far and have had no issues to date.

Each client has about two VMs each and our implementation works great on all Windows systems. We have a couple of each server including Windows 2008, Windows 2012, Windows 2016, and Windows 2019.

Altaro seems to have no issue backing up these OS versions and we have had no complaints from clients as to missing data or failures after backups have been completed. Altaro is always our go-to VM backup software.

The Altaro software helps us develop backups successfully and quickly. The interface is user-friendly and even if our tech isn't onsite, we can work with the owners to confirm that the data will be restored with no issues.

We have had many issues in the past with software not being user-friendly or having a bad restore causing us to restart from scratch. Altaro prevents the monthly maintenance of having to check backups to confirm they are not faulty. The worst feeling is plugging in a restore and having no backup to restore because its corrupted. Here, with Altaro, we don't have that issue.

The GUI interface is desirable we can't function without it. We love it and our clients love it. We don't get stuck in trying to navigate through a bunch of diagnostic pages, home pages, and stored data. What you need is just a couple of clicks away.

Altaro makes everything much easier to perform on time-sensitive client sites. Clients seem to like the idea of having a backup of their VM without taking a day to back up all of their data.

The application could include a feature to install a set size of data, such as the ability to store a single application with all its registry information for easy transfer. There are a couple of tools out there already that utilize this but having it all in one tool would make day-to-day IT work much faster and easier on techs.

The software already does what is expected but having a couple of new tools wouldn't hurt the value of the software. There is not much to improve and my clients seem to like the fact that I am able to provide VM maintenance service quickly and efficiently.

We have been using Altaro VM Backup for more than four years.

If you run into trouble, the support is always there to help. We hardly need support but when we do, it's great to know that we aren't placed on hold for long periods of time.

We had some free software that we used four years ago but they all seem to have their own flaws.

The price is great for the utility you get and the licensing has never caused any issues with my company.

This was four years ago and I can't recall the name but they were never as great as Altaro. I won't look back at what I have chosen as a VM backup software.

The software is great and does what I need for an application. I have no complaints and as long as the backups never become corrupt from the software, I will continue using Altaro.

We backup Hyper-V VMs from two hosts with Altaro VM backup. It could not be any easier to back up a VM server than it is with Altaro VM Backup. It is pretty much set it and forget it.

We do, of course, monitor our backups, and Altaro makes this very easy as well by using the monitoring software on our office computer. It connects to the software installed on the VM host, lets us know what is going on, and whether there have been any problems with backups or storage, etc. This is a very awesome backup software! Period!

Before we installed Altaro, we had constant problems with our backups. We were using an older platform and needed a change badly. Since we moved to Altaro VM backup, we have not had any issues with our backups. Everything just works.

All our backups can now be stored in more than one location, due to the ease that Altaro provides in setting up offsite backup storage. You can also add other types of storage if you need them.

I find that the Altaro backup software is just about as easy as it gets to protect your VMs.

The most valuable feature is the dashboard, which shows everything you need to see at a quick glance. It doesn't stop there; it goes into detail on the status of your storage devices and how much space you have available, along with how much you have saved with deduplication.

Deduplication is another great feature that saves so much space on your backup storage that it is sometimes hard to believe.

The backup graphs are awesome also, helping you see your information at a glance.

The CDP backup feature is very nice, as it allows you to take backups at high frequencies and with application consistency.  

To improve Altaro, I would like to see the ability to choose more than one backup location at a time. Make it possible to backup to a NAS, while at the same time or even a different scheduled time, back up to either a different NAS, or a cloud service, or a local drive. Right now you can add multiple backup locations, but you can only have the VM backup to just one of them. I would like to see this change to allow the VM to backup to all the locations either at the same time, or at different times.

We have been using Altaro VM Backup for five years.

We have never had an issue when Altaro stopped working due to the backup software. It has always been great and just keeps going. It is a very stable solution.

It is very easy to keep adding as many server hosts as you need, no problems at all.

Oh wow! Altaro's support and service are top-notch. They are always available and ready to help. We have had to call on them a few times with some detailed questions and never had a problem. Furthermore, we always got a very quick response.

We did use a different solution, and it was getting old and outdated. We knew that we needed to find something much better.

This was one of the most straightforward backup solutions I have experienced. It was literally: install it, configure it, and let it run.

We purchased it through a Vender, and they were very helpful in getting us answers. They also gave us a good price for the product.

When we first installed Altaro's solution, our ROI was only about two to three months, at most. That can vary for different companies, but it was spot on for us.

Altaro had the best prices and ROI in the whole bunch that we evaluated. After testing it, we found that we lost no features or additions that the others offered.

We looked at several different solutions in the industry, and some other ones work very well. One of the biggest things that made the difference at that point was the cost. Altaro was a huge discount compared to the next solution we were looking at, so much we wondered, what could be the catch.

Once we downloaded the trial version and used it, we were hooked. Nothing was missing, and we got it all for a much better deal.

The other solutions that we evaluated were Carbonite, Veeam, Acronis, and Symantec.

If you have VMs to backup, Altaro is the BEST solution for us and many others alike. I would suggest that you do your homework because everybody's needs are different, and make sure that you test Altaro. You may not need to waste any more time on anything else because it just works!

It's a bare-metal solution, that's number one. I use it in my teachings for my students. I oblige them to use it on Windows 10 Pro Edition. I'm using it myself on the surface. All of the features are fantastic and also the management from Microsoft dealing with multiple machines is great. The whole package is excellent for me. 

For the time being, I don't see any improvements that they can incorporate. Microsoft is improving every generation with more hardware assistance from the processors which is good.

At the University here we did a very detailed study and comparison of two other solutions and Altaro came out on top. Even better than VMware but perhaps a little less better than the Lennox solution when it comes to performance. The papers are publicly available concerning this comparison. We are quite happy with how it evolves with the next generation of machinery yes.

There are other products of Microsoft you can use to monitor everything, the whole set, the management module. 

The pricing of that problem is quite high but okay.

If you look into the performance of a virtual machine and you look to the performance of the physical machine, the correlation between these is totally unclear. The physical machine says I'm using ten percent of our processor power and as you go to the virtual machine it says I'm using fifty percent or sixty percent processor power. The correlation between the two is totally unclear. That's a technical issue, which I asked a student to dig into the details and figure out what the relation is. That's the only point I have for the time being.

I have been using this for the last ten years and haven't encountered stability problems.

I haven't needed to contact their technical support. 

My students don't have any problems deploying this solution. There are students who aren't so smart so if they can do it, it's a simple installation.

I think the pricing is okay. The data center edition, for example, is a good price for your machines. I don't see a problem with the pricing.

I'm extremely happy with this solution. It's a complete solution. I would give it a ten out of ten.

My advice to someone considering this solution is to play around. This is what I ask my students to do, and they play around on Hyper-V on the Windows 10 Pro Edition. It doesn't have all of the features but it's the best that you can get. That's my advice, you don't have to buy anything. You have Windows 10 Pro Edition and you can experiment with Hyper-V on your machine or notebook.

Our primary use for this solution is for managing backup tasks such as replication, migration and disaster recovery.

In Hyper-V, I think there are many valuable features. Replication between the different hosts, high availability, live migration — where I can migrate between one host to another — as well as incremental disaster recovery, are very good. These solutions are based on Hyper-V in two distinct geographic sites. But my interest in this feature is that I implement it in the VMware infrastructure because the rest of my infrastructure is based on the VMware.

I implement the solution based on VMware and Hyper-V. I think some of the features that either of these companies are providing should be better. As an example, the replication time between virtual machines is slow. It really depends on network latency. In addition to this, I think the GUI to manage the view of the control panel of the virtual machine is not very user-friendly. It could be improved as well.

It would be very helpful if local technical support could be improved. Because of sanctions we do not have direct access to Microsoft support services. There should be another way to offer support services either within the country or other means.

One last thing that would be helpful is to focus on the migration of the on-premises services to the cloud — something such as Azure, AWS. For this, it would be necessary for the manufacturer to provide a different user interface to be compatible with Amazon or Azure services.

Unfortunately, due to the sanctions in my country (Iran), I can't access the Microsoft support team. By doing this type of work, experts here have to learn the products intimately. Our organization provides solutions for state or public organizations and we also provide support for them. As an example, I'm engaged in supporting and maintaining services for customer's bank services infrastructure as a level three expert. If I have any problems, I try to connect to different forums and knowledge bases because of sanctions. We can't access the technical support from Microsoft organization. Technical support for my country should be improved.

I have used both VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V. They are very similar to each other and there is almost no difference when you use them often. When I am working for different clients or at different jobs I will use the tools that are there. 

In our country, because of sanctions, we can not access the public cloud provider. Therefore, and to keep within regulations, we have to provide backup solutions on-premises. We implement VM Backup and HP Data Protector backup in the bank data center. Because of this, I only have experience with VM Backup solution on-premises.

There is no problem in implementing and maintaining VMware or the Hyper-V infrastructure. I have experience with both and because of this experience, I think it is not very difficult for me to do the deployments and setup. It may not be so easy for everyone because it is very important to have a good understanding of the implementation options.

We did not need to consult with an integrator or technical support for the implementation because it was very easy to do.

Many countries that are faced with sanctions, the price of products is a very big problem because most of the companies don't have big budgets. They end up having to use different solutions than they would prefer. With our customers such as banks and financial institutions, there are usually no budget problems and they provide us enough finances to buy proper licensing.

VMware is more than Hyper-V. Hyper-V is a good price in comparison with VMware or other virtualization solutions.

I have evaluated many solutions but I am really working with solutions that work for my clients and make sense for a particular application.

On a scale from one to ten when one is the worst and ten is the best, I would rate Hyper-V as a seven. It is not the best but it is good.

The ease of use of the solution is its most valuable feature. The interface is also excellent.

The scalability of the solution is limited. 

It's scalable but only scalable to a certain level. If it's for a high-end enterprise, you will have trouble.  If you have seven servers or more and then you'll probably struggle a bit. Right now, we have 500-600 users.

The technical support for this solution is excellent. I'd give it a rating of nine out of ten.
