Comprehensive detection has protected email traffic and now simplifies endpoint security work
Sophos Email security is the primary product I use. It scans all your inbound and outbound email for malware. It also has a capability for looking for phishing and spear phishing content and blocking it. Email has an extended capability that includes what's called a secure web gateway. All user traffic gets managed through that, making it a combination product. The version of the product you run determines which features are available. Reporting is competent. There is scope for more improvements, which they will do as they do every year regularly. They keep updating the product. Reporting gives you the relevant details of what is happening, so it's mature on that front. The main benefit is security for your email. The beauty of the Sophos system is that the XDR functionality runs across the system. Sophos, Trend Micro, and Microsoft are the only three that have a very strong system with this concept. XDR stands for extended detection and response, and it's a technology where the system automatically exchanges security signals between the endpoint, the email, and other similar products of the same brand. If you have Sophos Endpoint and Sophos Email, you have very good connectivity from the endpoint to the cloud at the email level and to some extent onto the browsing traffic. You have a very rounded security aspect.

The product provides good content filtering options, but the false positive submissions must be improved
The tool is very stable. I rate the stability a seven out of ten. It's an on-premise application that runs on a virtual machine. It has dependencies on the hypervisor host that we're running it on. If it's not configured, the application can be influenced by it. Sometimes, there is a service stop error while the service is still running. Sometimes, the service just stops. Some policies do not act the way that we intend them to respond.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most significant aspect is the response filtering concerning attachments and links."
"The deployment is very easy. It's quite straightforward."
"It filtered most of the spam and junk emails and quarantined them."
"Sophos offers a giant suite through their central managed console, they became MSP friendly."
"Sophos Email offers encryption and malware protection, provides visibility into emails, has 99% accuracy in catching spam, enhances organizational safety, integrates with various vendors like Microsoft, is deployable with any email service, prevents data loss, features authentication rules, synchronizes with Active Directory and Azure, and includes a self-service portal. The product is very flexible."
"Sophos Email is in the cloud and integrated with its firewall."
"Sophos Email provides both inbound and outbound filtering."
"I would recommend Sophos Email to both end-users and other entities that want to protect their emails."
"My advice to others who plan to use Symantec Messaging Gateway is that it's a very good product, it's very stable, and it's user-friendly, but the only problem is that it doesn't have good partner support here in Bolivia, where I'm located."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is the content filtering policies because the solution offers huge options for configuration, such as hardware manipulation, et cetera, and the dictionaries make the work easier."
"Symantec is a secure product."
"Messaging Gateway is stable."
"I like that it's simple and easy to configure, deploy, and manage. The reporting function has all the features we're looking for, and we are fine with that."
"Symantec Messaging Gateway is stable and scalable."
"The cloud-based interface is very user-friendly."
"Since Symantec Messaging Gateway is a Linux-based solution it is stable."

Cons

"Sophos Email could better detect fake emails, especially when the domain names are similar. It needs to improve spotting spoofed domains, like when one letter differs in a domain name. It also needs to incorporate AI detection. Barracuda detects suspicious emails better. However, malware scanning is better in Sophos Email."
"It was sometimes hard to find the settings in the solution's interface."
"The solution has not found a way to block certain kinds of phishing emails."
"Their technical support is slow to respond."
"The product could include all the essential features and capabilities, similar to the on-premise, server-based version."
"The tool's pricing is expensive. In its future release, the tool should make reporting easier to view."
"Enhancing rule creation and customization features would provide users with greater control over their email security settings."
"The pricing could improve by having additional discounts."
"Since it was purchased by Broadcomm, we've found there's been a general slide in terms of the local services we have access to and we are considering replacing them."
"What needs to be improved in Symantec Messaging Gateway is its local partner support, as it's not as technical."
"Recently, I've had some problems regarding their support. The tech was acquired by Broadcom, and since then, the support part is very bad."
"Where it is not available, as is the case with unstructured data, this product fails miserably."
"Support could be better. What's also lacking when you compare it with Proofpoint and other threat protection solutions is that it does the basic stuff, but we need more advanced threat handling."
"Symantec Messaging Gateway should include better exclusions and exceptions for better administration."
"Messaging Gateway's advanced malware detection could be improved."
"Sometimes the solution picks up false positive for viruses during scans."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I rate the price of Sophos Email a four out of five."
"Sophos Email is a little expensive for us, but it's necessary. We have a subscription and renew it every three years."
"It is an expensive solution. On a scale of one to ten, where one is low price, and ten is high price, I rate the pricing a seven."
"The tool's price is reasonable. On a yearly basis, there is a 20 percent increase in prices, but it is not an issue."
"The pricing is fair."
"It falls somewhere in the middle—it's not excessively expensive nor very cheap."
"The product is cheaper compared to other solutions."

"It's a bit expensive compared to its competitor Barracuda Email Security Gateway but cheaper than Sophos Email."
