Multi-factor security has improved device protection but still needs broader application coverage
Fortinet FortiAuthenticator could be improved in its cost structure. Although it is not expensive, other solutions offer more value for less money. Cisco Duo provides better value in this regard and connects to web applications much more easily, scaling effectively in that sense. While I have never used Cisco Duo to secure other devices in IoT environments, I know Cisco Duo is capable of doing so, whereas Fortinet FortiAuthenticator cannot. Additionally, Cisco Duo is also cheaper. These are the main reasons why we switched away from Fortinet FortiAuthenticator, as it was very limited compared to other solutions available. Fortinet FortiAuthenticator was primarily missing the ability to scale to web applications.

A solution with good capabilities across a wide range of platforms that comes with a useful mobile application, but upgrades cause issues
We have noticed that patches and upgrades cause issues with how the application functions, due to the lack of stability of the product. However, we would recommend the solution because it has good capabilities, across a wide range of platforms, and the mobile application allows for use via Bluetooth, so users don't have to be connected to the internet. I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.

Pros

"The initial setup of Fortinet FortiAuthenticator was straightforward, working effectively out of the box."
"Once you configure it properly, it runs fine."
"This is a scalable product."
"The product's on-premise version doesn't have recurring costs."
"Fortinet FortiAuthenticator is an easy-to-use solution."
"The biggest advantages of Fortinet FortiAuthenticator are that it's easy to deploy, easy to manage, and the GUI is a very strong interface."
"The product is very easy to use and someone can easily manage working with it, so we do not need any support."
"FortiCare can provide prompt replies."
"This solution has a mobile application, which comes with multi-factor authentication; allowing for more flexible usage, without having to sacrifice system security."

Cons

"They could expand FortiAuthenticator's capabilities to accommodate a broader range of environments."
"If you want some other FortiAuthenticator from one site to another site, you should have requirements, but really if you have authentication and directory or another solution, you should change the password of the authenticator between the solution and the directory and other things. So transfer of data and other information should be simpler."
"The GUI is not fancy enough and some of the settings are difficult to access."
"We've had some issues with integration."
"A lot of configurations are available only from CLI."
"It can not use SQL to query FortiAnalyzer directly."
"Fortinet FortiAuthenticator could benefit from some artificial intelligence functionality and resolution of some glitches that may exist."
"I would like to see more support from Fortinet with tech support people who have as much expertise on the authenticator as they do on their firewalls."
"The product suffers from frequent disturbances in service, that have impacted our end users when we deploy software updates."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The pricing is fair."
"It is usually cheap. Without a license, you can use some basic features. You can buy a 20-year license and implement the solution once."
"The product has affordable pricing compared to other vendors."
"We pay for licensing on a yearly basis."
"I price of the solution is expensive."
"It costs more to license the high-availability option."
"I would rate the pricing a four out of ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive. It is not that costly. It is cheap, easy to manage, easy to install, and easy to configure."
"The cost of the license could be less expensive. The license is paid on a yearly basis."
