Has improved incident response with better root cause visibility and supports flexible on-call scheduling
Datadog needs to introduce more hard limits to cost. If we see a huge log spike, administrators should have more control over what happens to save costs. If a service starts logging extensively, I want the ability to automatically direct that log into the cheapest log bucket. This should be the case with many offerings. If we're seeing too much APM, we need to be aware of it and able to stop it rather than having administrators reach out to specific teams. Datadog has become significantly slower over the last year. They could improve performance at the risk of slowing down feature work. More resources need to go into Fleet Automation because we face many problems with things such as the Ansible role to install Datadog in non-containerized hosts. We mainly want to see performance improvements, less time spent looking at costs, the ability to trust that costs will stay reasonable, and an easier way to manage our agents. It is such a powerful tool with much potential on the horizon, but cost control, performance, and agent management need improvement. The main issues are with the administrative side rather than the actual application.

Offers real-time alerting and dashboards are great for performance hubs of the database
It's primarily for CPU utilization and resource monitoring. Vulnerability scanning falls under OCI Cloud Guard, so it's related to security concerns. Some people might prefer using a third-party tool for more enhanced features. However, I think Oracle Infrastructure Monitoring Cloud Service could be improved to reduce the need for third-party connectivity. So overall, third-party connectivity is the part that needs improvement within Oracle Infrastructure Monitoring Cloud Service. OCI needs more research and development to understand why clients choose third-party tools like Splunk or QRadar over internal monitoring solutions. There must be some areas where third-party tools are better. OCI could analyze this and improve its service.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"APM is great and has provided low-effort out-of-the-box observability for various services."
"With Datadog, we managed to get everyone on board into a single place and a single tool, providing teams with one spot where they can check everything related to monitoring, and enabling management and leadership to have an overview of all tools working together."
"Real user monitoring gives us invaluable insights into actual user experiences, helping us prioritize improvements where they matter most."
"The ability to send notifications based on metadata from the monitor is helpful."
"Datadog has impacted my organization positively as this is our main observability tool when it comes to monitoring services, traces, and all resources within key services."
"We have a better grasp of what is occurring during the deployment cycle. If something fails, we have an idea what has failed, where it has failed, and how it failed to better mitigate the situation."
"I find the greatest feature is being able to search across logs from various microservices."
"I have found some of the most valuable features to be the way things all come together that gives us a point of view that is useful. The panel is very beautiful and customizable."
"Real-time alerting is a very important feature. We need alerts for everything. We have alarms setup and get alerts through email or third-party integrations depending on what's happening – critical VMs, high CPU usage, security concerns."

Cons

"Datadog's roadmap can be a bit unpredictable at times."
"Presently, the billing CSV reports provide insights into billing-related information yet are somewhat limited in functionality, typically offering reports with only three columns."
"The largest pain point we've had with Datadog to this point was onboarding."
"The Log Explorer could be better. I don't think it has log manipulation as Splunk does."
"I rate Datadog an eight out of ten because the expense of using it keeps it from being a nine or ten."
"A big problem with Datadog is the billing. They need to make the billing more user-friendly."
"They need to offer better/more customization on what logs we get and making tracing possible on Edge runtime logs is a real requirement."
"There is always room for improvement when dealing with cloud-based technologies. Mainly, I would say, it's just increasing our offerings to attract various other types of industries and businesses across more fields."
"Third-party connectivity is the part that needs improvement within Oracle Infrastructure Monitoring Cloud Service."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Our licensing fees are paid on a monthly basis."
"Sometimes it's very hard to project how much it will cost for the monthly subscription for the next month when you add certain features. Having better visibility of the cost would give a better experience."
"Licensing is based on the retention period of logs and metrics."
"Pricing and licensing are reasonable for what they give you. You get the first five hosts free, which is fun to play around with. Then it's about four dollars a month per host, which is very affordable for what you get out of it. We have a lot of hosts that we put a lot of custom metrics into, and every host gives you an allowance for the number of custom metrics."
"I am not satisfied with its licensing. Its payment is based on the exported data, and there was an explosion of the data for three or four weeks. My customer was not alerted, and there was no way for them to see that there has been an explosion of data. They got a big invoice for one or two months. The pricing model of Datadog is based on the data. The customer was quite surprised about not being alerted about this explosion of data. They should provide some kind of alert when there is an increase in usage."
"The cost is high and this can be justified if the scale of the environment is big."
"It didn't scale well from the cost perspective. We had a custom package deal."
"This solution is budget friendly."
"For monitoring specifically, it's not that expensive. The licensing is yearly basis."
