Network segmentation has improved security and performance across all departments
Cisco Ethernet Switches offer various features such as L3 capable models which help me with my routing requirements, OSPF, EIGRP, and VRF for segmentation, as well as policy-based routing. Additionally, it provides a high layer of enterprise security via 802.1X port-based authentication, DHCP snooping, ARP inspection, IP Guard, ACLs, and integration with Cisco ISE. I have been using Cisco Ethernet Switches for more than four years, and they have provided me stability, better connectivity, and higher speed. My organization values these switches greatly.

Greatly simplifies troubleshooting; remote access to the router is a huge time saver
The solution has a problem with documentation. Luxul doesn't want to give the documentation to any Joe Bloggs, but even as a dealer going to the Luxul portal, there are no documents. I can always call technical support and ask them if I forget something and I'll get the support, but I shouldn't need to do that. Anything can be improved and unfortunately a good switch is not cheap but there's no choice if you need a special router.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"My advice to others looking to purchases Cisco Ethernet Switches is you pay perhaps a little bit more on the equipment, but there are available engineers to help with the programming, set up, and implementation of the switches."
"Cisco Switches serve their purpose; they add value to the virtual workload, and you can tap into all of the features for your virtual workload environment."
"The quality of service is one of the main reasons we use Cisco in our organization. It's quite high and very reliable. The switches also end up working for a long time, so there's less need to replace them as often as others. We have some switches in our company that has been running since 2006, for example. They are quite old, but they still work."
"One of the most valuable aspects of Cisco Ethernet Switches is many engineers can work on the equipment. You can find qualified engineers that can configure Cisco equipment more than any other networking equipment."
"It is a very good solution."
"The installation is very straightforward."
"The solution is compatible with many brands, such as VMware."
"This is a great solution for network switching and security."
"The solution is excellent for audio-video and multi-casting."
"All of my customers, including residential and commercial clients, are extremely happy with these switches."
"The ePoE+ is great."
"The solution is less expensive than other options."
"Remote access to the router is a huge time saver."
"It's a rock-solid connectivity and a rock-solid Wi-Fi coverage, which is what my customers love."

Cons

"It would be nice if they had higher wattage for PoE+."
"At the moment the switches that you have can't scale because they've got their control plane and data plane in the same device."
"The NX-API REST is not very good and should be improved."
"I don't like that you have to have a license of 10 years to use the switch. I don't understand that policy."
"The most challenging part is connecting them through fiber for higher speed in the network."
"The enterprise-level switches should have a simpler deployment. They should make it possible for lower-skilled workers to be able to deploy the product."
"The typical areas of concern for Cisco Ethernet Switches are not technical but cost including support costs. I’ve never liked the fact that end users cannot download security patches without a support contract. I’ve had trouble getting approval to renew Cisco support contracts due to the cost."
"There's are other products that are better for network programmability. Cisco isn't as programmable as some preferred vendors. For example, on iOS 6 products, you have to commit the change directly on the running configuration. If you have a generic product you can do this, so it can improve in programmability."
"While the solution is good for the light commercial market or for the residential market, it's not ideal for the commercial market, for example, a big enterprise or data center."
"The solution has a problem with documentation. Luxul doesn't want to give the documentation to any Joe Bloggs, but even as a dealer going to the Luxul portal, there are no documents."
"You do need to be an IT person in order to handle the initial setup. An AV person would struggle a bit."
"The documentation could be improved; it's quite basic."
"Documentation and access to it could be greatly improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"When you compare with other products, they are more or less the same price."
"Price is a pain point for us. We've lost a lot of bids, and the reason has been that we majorly quoted Cisco devices. Some of our competitors quoted other devices like Ubiquity or Microchip. Some even quoted this Chinese product TP-Link, and they won the bid over us because we quoted Cisco. Meanwhile, the major reason why we quoted Cisco is reliability and stability from day one. They also last longer. The prices could be worked on so that they become more affordable. We had to deploy a city-wide WiFi network, and we were working in conjunction with Google. Because of the price, even Google recommended a product called Ruckus, so we used Ruckus over Cisco. Its price and license were the main reasons. You have to pay to renew the license every year. Even though you also renew the licenses for Ruckus, but they are much cheaper than Cisco. So, while I would recommend Cisco any time, the trouble remains with the pricing."
"The price is a bit on the high side."
"Users have to pay an annual licensing fee for Cisco Ethernet Switches, which is expensive."
"Not inexpensive. Price will vary widely depending on the chosen product and size of the deployment."
"The price of this solution is high."
"The cost of Cisco Ethernet Switches is expensive."
"Customers have to pay for some of the L3 switches licenses, which are expensive."
"The price completely depends on the environment. There are no additional fees."
