Unified security and sd-wan have improved uptime and cut wan costs for multi-site branches
Users report stability issues in certain versions, which requires regular updates. Real-world attacks have also highlighted the need for urgent patching of vulnerabilities.Fortinet FortiGate, while a powerful and feature-rich web firewall, could improve in areas like firmware stability, documentation, and ease of use. The learning curve can be steep for some users. For beginners, support quality can vary, and frequent updates with occasional vulnerabilities call for careful patch management. However, once Fortinet FortiGate is configured, it remains highly reliable and efficient. Customer support needs improvement, as I find it very slow, with reports from other users reflecting that customer support is inadequate.

Centralized firewall management has saved time and improved network security across locations
Barracuda CloudGen Firewall could be improved as it has a very high learning curve. It is definitely not a one and done firewall, as a one and done firewall requires a lot of dedicated time to get the machine running the way you want. To improve Barracuda CloudGen Firewall, there should be a lot of tutorials and videos online to help new users. Multiple ways to configure for the same service or feature takes time to determine your customized build. In addition to previous points, the interface can sometimes be clunky when trying to determine how it is organized or arranged.

Enhanced threat detection with integrated security features and good support
We are using application firewalling, WAF, and SD-WAN. The capabilities are mostly within the box. For example, you will get web application firewall WAF as part and parcel of this. SD-WAN is also bundled. It integrates with their SIEM and SOAR solutions very nicely. Lastly, the pricing point is very cost-efficient as well.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The centralized management allowed us to manage 50 devices effectively, which I found better than Cisco."
"It is easy to use, and there are a lot of security features right out of the box."
"The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate are the different types of profiling. It has been the most effective for me. The WAF and the antivirus profile are the most effective in network protection."
"We are very well satisfied with the Fortinet technical support."
"The main benefits that Fortinet FortiGate brings to customers include that if you're going for a single fabric with core switches, access switches, and APs, compared to legacy Cisco or Aruba, the Fortinet FortiGate does not require a controller for the access points."
"Fortinet FortiGate provides combined features that other firewalls do not offer, offering a full package cost-effective manager with all integration supported."
"Most of the customers look at Cisco, Cisco Meraki, Palo Alto, and Fortinet, and they go with Fortinet because of the best performance per dollar spent and ease of licensing and management."
"The most valuable features of Fortinet FortiGate IPS are firewall and filtering."
"The antivirus protection or malware protection has been great."
"My additional thoughts about Barracuda CloudGen Firewall is that the experience has been positive for using this tool with solid protection with easy management and control of the network."
"We evaluated a lot of different options, and we concluded that Barracuda NG Firewall provided the most features for an exemplary price."
"It provides a lot of functionality adhering to the current trends."
"I would recommend Barracuda CloudGen Firewall to almost everybody, and I couldn't foresee anyone to whom I wouldn't recommend unless they are very price sensitive."
"Add-on features such as Virus Scanning, ATP, and web filtering add another level of protection and block malware before it gets to the end user."
"This is a very stable solution; once you have deployed it following the criteria, you almost never have to touch it."
"Its ability to block incoming attacks is valuable. Its logging, traffic monitoring, and VPN capabilities are also valuable."
"In terms of the most valuable features, the IPS report is quick and updated. Performance is also valuable."
"The absolute best part of Sangfor NGAF is their support; it's a 24/7 support channel, and the last time I requested their assistance I got a reply within three minutes and they helped solve the problem immediately."
"We've found the technical support to be helpful."
"Sangfor's tech features and technologies are more powerful than those of the other solution providers in terms of security. They also have big solutions in terms of cybersecurity."
"I think this solution is a very good example of a proactive solution that can detect problems and immediately fix the problems or issues."
"When it comes to the price of firewall solutions, Sangfor NGAF takes the cake, as it is cheaper than Fortinet, Sophos, Check Point and Palo Alto."
"Sangfor NGAF specializes in ransomware detection and helps to protect our network from ransomware threats and malware."
"The product is very fast and reliable."

Cons

"The solution should allow more user-friendly integrations or deployment"
"They could do more work on FortiAnalyzer in terms of the data and the information coming from it."
"There are SD-WAN network monitoring, SD-WAN features, Industrial Databases, Internet of Things, Detection, etc., however, we do have not licenses for those features. We thought that if you bought a product, you should have all of the features it offers."
"Integrating OpenVPN with FortiGate would provide a powerful combination of secure remote access and comprehensive network security."
"The initial setup and configuration are not intuitive and require training."
"Sometimes it's super hard to figure out what's wrong with a FortiGate VPN unless you know the commands on the CLI to see the flow and how to interpret it."
"Stability and technical support are the two major issues I have found with Fortinet."
"However, the problem is that their subscription price is very high."
"To start working with spam, it takes a while because the product has to see that multiple emails are coming in with all the spam."
"A rule for email announcements, when configured hits occur, would be a great improvement for a more efficient experience."
"The administration UI could be better. It should also have better application detection policies."
"We would like to see a solution that is focused on container deployment, which is very important right now."
"Sometimes we have a need for detailed reports. Barracuda NG Firewall does not have a reports module and uses a satellite application (Barracuda NG Firewall Report Creator)."
"There could be improvements in licensing."
"When you login from some sources, there is no feature in this box which can log you out after a certain timeout."
"Another problem with Barracuda, in my experience, is the appliance lifetime."
"Sangfor NGAF could improve the policies and default criteria. They could be much better."
"The product must provide more IPS features."
"Lacks consistency in terms of filtering certain websites and applications."
"I would be happy if Sangfor developed a firewall designed specifically for home use, as well as for small businesses such as clinics and so on."
"The firewall system needs gradual improvements because there are more threats and challenges every day."
"It does not offer any recommendations on how to mitigate or control attacks."
"I believe that IAM and NGFW need to merge into a single box, instead of there being two separate box solutions."
"The tool is expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If you are looking for a quality product, it will come at a higher price. Expecting them to be significantly cheaper is unrealistic. In terms of pricing, it is a bit costly. However, the functionality and support offered are worth it."
"Its pricing is fine. It is on a yearly basis. Other than the licensing fee, there is no extra fee."
"It's not the cheapest, but it's value for money. Given everything we've got out of it: the DMZ port, the VPN, and the high availability, it's a pretty reasonable price."
"Setup cost may be not so low, as you expect, because it depends on different factors, but TCO for 5 years may pleasantly surprise you."
"Fortinet FortiGate has different licensing models, depending on what you're going to do. Services included would depend on the license model. Licenses can be renewed annually."
"It is affordable. Palo Alto is much more expensive than Fortinet."
"There is a license required to use Fortinet FortiGate with all the features. It has to be updated with the threats on an ongoing basis for the signatures to prevent threats and a license is needed to receive those security updates."
"The price is fine."
"In general, it tends to be cheaper than most solutions."
"It's not the most expensive, but it's certainly not cheap."
"Its licensing is on a yearly basis. There is an upfront purchase price, and there is also an annual maintenance fee. There are no additional fees."
"My advice is to try and evaluate it (Barracuda offers a trial period of one month)."
"Purchasing through AWS Marketplace was good. We did it because it was easy."
"The solution's price is reasonable."
"The pricing is very cheap compared to Cisco ASA, which we used before, and compared to Palo Alto Networks and Fortinet. Barracuda has different solutions for different people. So for my SMB-level infrastructure, Barracuda has given me a proper solution that is half of the price of Palo Alto or Fortinet."
"The platform is inexpensive compared to other vendors."
"The price falls in the mid-range, neither exceptionally low nor high."
"It costs about 8 to 10 thousand dollars per year for 500 users, standard licensing fees included."
"For over 2000 users, the cost is around 5000 to 6000 USD. If you want a web application firewall, you have to purchase an additional license for it."
"Sangfor NGAF is a cheaply priced product, especially if I consider the previous product that was used in my company."
"For four to five physical appliances for a licensed firewall, it costs approximately $4,000."
"Sangfor NGAF price is reasonable and there is an annual license. However, the maintenance cost can be a bit high."
"The product is very cost-effective compared to other brands or vendors."
"The price could be more competitive."
