What is our primary use case?
My use cases for Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points include having them for our own company internally. We are a systems integrator with about 900 employees, and we have a distributed wireless set with all Cisco, currently all Cisco 9100 series access points.
We use both central switching and local switching on those for various use cases, and we also have outdoor access points and everything. Basically, I use Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points in enterprise environment wireless for office. I also work with Cisco Wireless at our customers, where I have all kinds of use cases. I have customers in the logistics field, in the production field, and in the enterprise field. I bring wireless to production machines, logistics machines, and also office clients.
What is most valuable?
One thing I appreciate the most about Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points is that something absolutely stands out, especially about Cisco Wireless, which has made a huge impact on me personally, even though I have been a mentor in my company for a long time. The best thing about Cisco, which I experienced over 10 years, is that everybody knows it and everybody knows how to use it.
If you look especially at the new series of Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points and their controllers, Cisco unified the GUI of the wireless controller with all their other GUIs that they have. They call it Magnetic UI, which they use nowadays on all their GUIs. Talent acquisition is just so easy because everybody in the IT networking field worked with any product of Cisco in their life, and all Cisco products fit so well together in an ecosystem and also have a very similar UI and are very easy to engage if you worked with anything from Cisco before. In my opinion, you save a lot on talent acquisition and also training people.
Compared to other vendors I have worked with, you do not easily find people that have worked with their products or are experts in them. But especially with Cisco, there are so many people that have worked with it in the past, and you always have people that can implement, operate, and manage it. That is, in my case, the coolest thing about it. Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points has helped me to improve the interaction between my network, data center, and application teams.
Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points can handle high-density environments with Wi-Fi 6, 6E, and 7. I have sold and operated Cisco Wireless in production areas and outdoor areas for automatic moving. I have a lot of high-ceiling models in use for logistics halls, for production environments with high ceilings and everything. Honestly, that is where they shine. They have some really cool models.
The product variety is really great. For each and every use case, you can find a very specific model that does exactly what you want. I have a lot of the high-ceiling models in use which cover high-density areas where the clients are sometimes shielded, sometimes moving, sometimes moving very fast, and all those kinds of things. I am very happy with these environments with Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points.
What needs improvement?
One thing I dislike about Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points is definitely the price. That is always the discussion with customers because they are for sure the priciest on the market. The licensing is also something I could mention as a second concern. The licensing model at Cisco is always very complicated. Price and licensing make it a little bit difficult in most situations.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points for about 10 years. I work for a systems integrator, and we have them internally, not just the 9100 series but Cisco access points in general.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
In terms of lagging, crashing, or downtime, Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points work seamlessly at all of my customers with very little interaction. Cisco access points, even not only the current series, the 9100 series, but also the previous series like the Aironet series, have always been very robust. The software has also been very good, always in my opinion. I have never encountered many bugs or many outages. Basically, you just install them, bring them up, and they just run for a very, very, very long time.
Even long after the end of life or end of support, they still run and operate seamlessly. The software upgrades are also very easy, just from the centralized wireless controller. You hit upgrade, it does all the access points at once or rolling, if you want. That never required a lot of time. I never had to invest a lot of time in wireless. Everything basically just worked.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Cisco optimizes for hybrid or distributed enterprise setups. The Cisco FlexConnect access point capability is definitely exactly what I need for our distributed offices. You can really easily choose if some traffic should leave the access point locally directly or be tunneled to a central location. That is called Cisco FlexConnect. We use that internally in our company as well as at all the customers because that is an amazing feature. That definitely helps for scalability on a global scale.
I love the overall scalability of Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points. Cisco wireless controllers are quite powerful, and it is really cool that you can have them physically and virtually. When you go for virtual wireless controllers, you can basically scale within minutes in any measure you want. You just spin up any number of wireless controllers, and you can control any number without limit of access points globally.
You can easily use Cisco FlexConnect, as I mentioned, to either tunnel traffic directly centrally or have it break out locally. If you have just some resources on your virtualization platform, you can scale endlessly and that very, very fast and very easy.
How are customer service and support?
I have had to contact Cisco's technical support for Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points. As an integrator, I am in contact with Cisco TAC a lot.
In terms of quality and speed, Cisco's technical support is really good. Of course, it is not always perfect, but I have also worked with other vendors, and Cisco TAC is still one of the fastest replying and also fastest resolving, in my opinion, not just in the wireless field but in general. I have had some TAC cases on Aruba and also on the firewall side with other vendors like Palo Alto, Fortinet, and so on and so forth. Especially in comparison, I am really, really satisfied with Cisco TAC.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I have used alternatives to Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points, but not as much as you would think because Cisco is really the market leader here in this area. I have seen Aruba and Juniper a little bit, also Motorola at some point, but Cisco is really, really widely spread. Almost everybody in my field here in Austria is using Cisco, so rarely, much less than you would think.
How was the initial setup?
The initial deployment with Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points is very easy. Cisco has a multi-tier bring-up approach on the access points. If you just put them out of the box, they do a very predictable set of things, and you can easily set up a staging area. Onboarding them and configuring them could not be easier, actually. You just put up the wireless controller, set up the profile, you set one DNS record, which is predefined on access points, and then you basically just boot them up with reachability to the wireless controller, and almost everything happens automatically. That is honestly no feedback there, as it could not be easier.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
If I were to compare Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points and Aruba, Aruba sure wins when it comes to price and ease of licensing, but in all other accounts, I prefer Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points.
What other advice do I have?
Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points do not require any significant maintenance from me. I would say this overall stability of Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points is quite one of the really cool things about the Cisco access points. At some point, I had some encounters where they were always almost running continuously, and you do not even realize anymore that you have them because they just do not act up. Then at some point, you have to swap them due to end of life or whatever, and then you really have to search for them because you forgot about where they are. That is something that, in comparison with Motorola, I experienced differently. They are very durable. You just install them and then they just outlive you, in my experience.
Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points have affected network reliability and the end-user experience positively. I am also an employee at the office, of course, so I sit in the office where Cisco Wireless is deployed. For all the time I have been in offices, it was Cisco Wireless, so as a user, I have never experienced a vendor change. Cisco Wireless was always very reliable. We have never had any outages due to Cisco Wireless in our office. I have no comparison as a user because I have always been a user of Cisco Wireless all in my time. There is no negative effect at all.
The role of AI-driven insights in enhancing my troubleshooting capabilities with Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points definitely did enhance my experience. Since I have onboarded and mentored a lot of new employees, the new features that come with Cisco Catalyst Center, where you can also integrate your wireless controllers, and also inside the Cisco wireless controllers, there are dashboards that they provide where the AI-driven models that they have show you some data, such as some anomalies and something that could be wrong in your environment. I have had various cases already, especially at customers, where those AI tools inside Cisco Catalyst Center and the Cisco wireless controller showed us problems that we did not even know existed.
I do use Cisco security products with Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points, including firewalls. The integration of Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points with the Cisco security stack has definitely affected my network security management. We use the Cisco ecosystem a lot, and you can integrate your Cisco wireless controller, for example, with the Cisco Catalyst Center, which on the other end, you can integrate with the Cisco security server, which is integrated with the firewalls.
It is very easy to create end-to-end security rules from your access point all the way to your perimeter firewall if you have the whole ecosystem. That is all in one management system from Cisco where you can just identify an end client which is connected to your wireless and deploy security measures either on the access point or on the perimeter firewall simultaneously. That definitely comes in very great. If you have the whole ecosystem, then you can leverage this integration of your firewall to the ICE server, in this case, and also Cisco Wireless to the ICE server, then it really comes together.
There are features and support for a Zero Trust strategy in Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points. That is exactly what I was talking about, in that you can enforce security on clients specifically end-to-end from firewalls to the access point by identifying them in one central management together. That is amazing. That is Cisco TrustSec which comes in in this case, the feature. I am familiar with Ultra-reliable Wireless Backhaul in Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points, but have not used it so far. I have not really used the real-time location precision with Ultra Wideband in Cisco Wireless 9100 Access Points.
Cisco does optimize the experience in hybrid or distributed enterprise setups. We have a quite distributed enterprise setup. Overall, I would rate this product a 9 out of 10.
