It is very simple and fast to power-on a replicated server, making it come online again

What is most valuable?

Replication (fast recovery for replicated servers).

How has it helped my organization?

It has decreased downtime issues. By using replication, we decreased our downtime for crashed servers and having other service/system issues.

It is very simple and fast to power-on a replicated server, making it come online again.

What needs improvement?

I'm not sure if this option is available in new versions. But different types of licenses could not be used on the same Veeam server in the past, it would be good to be able to use mixed types of licenses in the same server.

For how long have I used the solution?

About four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

No, it is working nice and smooth.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

No, because we are using this product in a small environment.

How are customer service and support?

We do not encounter many problems with the product, but we do get an instant response when needed.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We are still using a different product for backup. Veeam is being used for replication only.

How was the initial setup?

Since it was a single server setup, it was easy to install and configure.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is acceptable for us because we having been using it for approximately four years. However, I think for new buyers/customers it may be cheaper than other products.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Another product is being used for backup. We did a PoC with Veeam, then bought it.

What other advice do I have?

It is easy, with many features, (I think) it is cheaper. Very useful for virtual environments.

Would be good to have ability to backup physical servers but product is breath of fresh air compared to similar products

What is most valuable?

I have managed Veeam for several years and the user experience, the minimal complexity of management have been a breath of fresh air compared to experiences with similar products. I have had issues with other products from implementation to upgrade of versions and basic restore of data. Veeam has simplified the upgrade process and made it straightforward. I have experienced no issues with the installers. I can’t say I’m lucky so I have to say the product has been solid for me.

The value of the feature set is a difficult question. The instant restore is a great feature knowing that in the event of an outage our downtime will be minimal, as well as the Exchange explorer, the ability to restore files so granular to an entire VM is exceptional. I would also have to mention the Veeam One monitoring tool is used daily. The ability to have Grandfather, Father, and Son backups is extremely useful when preparing backup for tape or offsite. The compression and de-duplication capabilities for space savings and off-site backups.

How has it helped my organization?

To us the ability to restore an entire VM for Development and User Acceptance Testing is invaluable the need to Develop continues to grow and Veeam supplies us the ability to manage this seamlessly. Utilizing the de-duplication and compression built into Veeam we are able to keep backup longer and have the ability to perform more frequent backups.

What needs improvement?

I do have a need ever so small to have the ability to backup physical servers, this is not something Veeam offers.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been a Veeam customer for the past 4 Years.

What was my experience with deployment of the solution?

Deployment was very easy and straight forward. Upgrade process has also been straight forward.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In the infancy of the product I did encounter an instability with the backup chain becoming corrupt with every failed backup this issue has been resolved in the newer releases of Veeam.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scaling Veeam out was as simple as applying licenses to the new host that I wanted to protect or use as a target for my replication jobs.

How are customer service and technical support?

Customer Service:

We purchased our product threw a third party and the need for customer service interaction has not been warranted. We were able to view a demonstration of the product live at a technical event.

Technical Support:

I have had to work with support on a few issues early in the game. I found them to be very responsive and quick to resolve the issue. The professionalism and knowledge was at very high level.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I had originally used a different solution for backup and replication. I thought it was clunky and issue ridden but it worked for the situation I had. I was even looking at improved versions of the product when I came across Veeam at a vendor showcase. I was blown away by the manageability and scalability of veeam and after a little more research ordered it. I have not looked back since. Veeam has done everything it promised and with every release there have been great new tools and advances in the product.

How was the initial setup?

Now it has been several years since the initial setup but the setup was very straightforward, the agentless backup solution is easy to install and connect. The complex part of the setup was the decision of what database server I wanted to use.

What about the implementation team?

Veeam was implemented by an in-house team. Training for installation and configuration was found on Veeam website and support was ready to assist if any bumps were found.

What was our ROI?

I cannot give a dollar amount, but I can say the ROI with Veeam data deduplication has saved on time with backup window shrinkage and the storage required decreased substantially.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The original setup cost was very minimal, licensing was less expensive than the competitors and the equipment needed was purchased previously for the in place backup solution. Day-to-day expenses have also dropped with smaller lighter backups the window has shrunk from around 10 Hrs. to an area of 4 Hrs. This enables us to use this time for other mission critical task.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I had evaluated vRanger and Symantec backup products, both have come a long way since the evaluation but at the time of our Veeam purchase it was the product that had the features we needed.

If you are looking for physical server backup try the Endpoint Backup product. It can integrate with Veeam repositories and works very well. I have it on my Veeam servers which are physical and it sends backups to a Veeam Repository. Also the ability to create recovery media is exceptional as it can be a bootable image.

It's stable, and the restoration is easy and reliable
Pros and Cons
  • "One of the most valuable features of Veeam is that the restoration is easy and reliable."
  • "The ease of use could be improved, but I don't have a very deep amount of experience in Veeam, so it's difficult to say what could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use Veeam as a backup system, so for backup operations. Every company needs to have backups and restoration, and cannot live without it. We have ransomware, system failure, and a lot of problems facing us, so we need backups for the emailing systems, database, Hypervisor, and VMs.

What is most valuable?

One of the most valuable features of Veeam is that the restoration is easy and reliable.

What needs improvement?

The ease of use could be improved, but I don't have a very deep amount of experience in Veeam, so it's difficult to say what could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam for a couple of years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This solution is stable, and the restoration of Veeam is easy and reliable.

How are customer service and support?

A partner or mine has contacted technical support many times. He was very satisfied and recommended their support team.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have also tried Veritas Backup Exec, which is more difficult to use.

How was the initial setup?

It takes about two hours to install and implement this solution and to start backing up data. The operation of backups depends on the customer's data, so the timeframe will depend based on that data.

For deployment and maintenance, we have one person for administration and restoration and the IT manager for managing the system.

In my organization, users use it centralized, and it works for the servers and operates silently. No one can pause or refuse the backup operation. We implemented it like this for all customers, so that it backs up to the server and works without user involvement.

What about the implementation team?

We implemented this solution through an in-house team.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We pay for a license to use this solution, and we recommend that our customers pay for a license and a renewal license.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veeam Backup a nine out of ten, and I would recommend it to others.

Enables backup and replication with easy-to-use administration
Pros and Cons
  • "From my experience, Veeam is very good. Its interface is user-friendly. We can restore it whenever. It's not complicated. It's very easy to manage and administration is very easy."
  • "When you have some small issues, you should be able to go through it by yourself and solve the issue instead of opening the ticket and waiting for the engineers to troubleshoot."

What is our primary use case?

The primary use case is backup and replication. This solution is a backup, so it is used on-premises.

What is most valuable?

From my experience, Veeam is very good. Its interface is user-friendly. We can restore it whenever. It's not complicated. It's very easy to manage and administration is very easy.

What needs improvement?

Veeam should go for a different version of a hypervisor. For example, they are concentrating on Microsoft Hyper-V and on VMware. There are some virtualizations there, like AHV Nutanix. In that case, they need to rebuild application-wise. I checked with an AHV for my personal knowledge, and I couldn't find the same as in the VMware and Hyper-V. It's totally different. It opens with a different port.

They need to do some repository and improve the backup chain and logs. For example, sometimes we still need to call support for small things, and they're looking for the log.

In this case, they need to give some training to the administrators. It should be easy. In this case, there are some knowledge bases. If you go to the Veeam site, you will see the knowledge bases, but there should be a little awareness. Administrator awareness should come up for that, like with the small issues and how you want to replicate. When you have some small issues, you should be able to go through it by yourself and solve the issue instead of opening the ticket and waiting for the engineers to troubleshoot.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It was scalable.

How are customer service and support?

Technical support is amazing.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Veeam is totally different from Veritas when it comes to virtualization and virtual machines. For Veritas, we are just using the standalone, physical servers.

Veritas is good for a small environment. We are taking more backups in Veeam only, and we're only taking some backups in Veritas, which is like a physical server.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The cost is expensive. It will depend on how you are managing your environment, your requirements, and if you can easily manage a license. It's not that difficult, so you can manage it, but the cost is high, so you need to check directly with Veeam as well as the local partner so you can get the discount prices.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate this solution 10 out of 10.

Good support, stable, and easy to set up
Pros and Cons
  • "The backup and replication capabilities are quite good."
  • "The integration with other solutions should be improved."

What is our primary use case?

In my previous company, this was being used as the backup and replication solution.

What is most valuable?

The backup and replication capabilities are quite good.

What needs improvement?

The integration with other solutions should be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have worked with Veeam Backup & Replication for two years. I stopped using it a few months ago when I changed companies.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

For the entire time that I used it, this product was stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This a scalable solution.

How are customer service and technical support?

The technical support for Veeam is good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We currently use Dell EMC Avamar and we also have experience with IBM Spectrum Protect.

These are all specialty tools and are good, although, for the needs of our organization, we prefer Avamar.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, this is quite a good product and I recommend it.

I would rate this solution a nine out of ten.

We can now restore a single email box with all of its folder contents
Pros and Cons
  • "It has helped us transfer the solution in two days instead of working for a minimum of one week to ten days."
  • "I would like for them to develop the ability to fix the way it does backups. We can't pick a backup for one database. We have to do a backup on the whole Exchange VM. I'd like for them to change it to where we can do individual backups."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for a backup solution for our front-end servers.

How has it helped my organization?

It has improved my organization by 90%. Now we can restore a single box with all of its folder contents. We could install one email, one folder or one lead and it could have still one email. This has helped us a lot. Before we used to store the entire database and then we would go to the single mailbox we need to use and we could restore it. Now we could do it instantly whereas it used to take three to four days.

What is most valuable?

We migrated our servers from physical to virtual with our B2B platform. We had a big problem when trying to transfer our site server that was about six terabytes to the new environments. We wanted to do it with minimal effort and without changing the permission because if we do a copy, the permissions won't work. We put a Veeam Windows agent on these physical servers, did a backup and then we were able to take this backup as a drive that is connected to the new VM environment. It has helped us transfer the solution in two days instead of working for a minimum of one week to ten days.

What needs improvement?

I would like for them to develop the ability to fix the way it does backups. We can't pick a backup for one database. We have to do a backup on the whole Exchange VM. I'd like for them to change it to where we can do individual backups.

I would like for it to work with Oracle VM.

For how long have I used the solution?

Less than one year.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is very stable. It has worked well since we deployed it. We haven't had any problems until now. It's currently used daily. We do backups daily, weekly and monthly.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable. We are planning to increase usage. We are planning to buy new Oracle hardware and plan to add them to the same solution. It doesn't work with Oracle VM which is an issue.

We currently have 500 users that include top management, financial people, and engineers.

How are customer service and technical support?

The solution's technical support is good. They respond within a 20-hour timeframe. The issue that comes up with them is that our weekends don't overlap. We have off Friday and Saturday and they have off Saturday and Sunday so when we submit a request it can take a long time for them to respond. I would rate their technical support a seven out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We had been previously using HP Data Protector. We switched to virtualization. We switched to Veeam because the person who promoted it explained its benefits well.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very straightforward. The company that we hired came in and installed it without a hitch. Now we can use it efficiently without their help. The deployment took one day. We did have a problem when we started working with it. The difference between the restore points wasn't clear. Up until this point, we're still not sure what effect it has on our backup. I would like this to be made more clear. It's easier for us to directly put it on tapes than to first put it on storage.

As far as our deployment strategy went, we started with building our jobs. We took our jobs and tried to plan them on the system and we took VMs instead of files. It has worked up until now. After a month or so we did need to make some changes to some of our jobs.

What about the implementation team?

Our integrator is one who generally deals with IBM and Lenovo hardware in Egypt and we were the first case they had working with a Veeam solution. They listened to what we needed and what we were asking for. We need on the job training so we needed their help for the first month or so after the installation. The engineer was very helpful in guiding us through the deployment. He was very professional. He helped us at the beginning but after a certain point, we had some issues and he would tell us that he'd get back to us but he never did. He was busy and didn't prioritize us because we're not his main customer. We turned for support from Veeam themselves and they were responsive and helped us.

It requires two staff members for maintenance. They're two engineers that act as backup for each other. We really only need one engineer to administer everything but if he's not there, the other one is there as backup.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing is good and affordable.

What other advice do I have?

I would advise someone considering this solution to find a good implementor who can help you during and after the implementation.

I would rate it a nine out of ten. It's a good product that we can rely on, it has many features and works on many platforms. It's a very good product.

Enables us to restore the VM when the needs arises and for disaster recovery.
Pros and Cons
  • "Enables us to restore the VM when the needs arises and for disaster recovery."
  • "Near-synchronous, better RPO and RTO snapshot-based takes a lot of space and resources."

How has it helped my organization?

We had an issue with power in the data center and one of the IBM storage devices could not startup. We managed to restore all of the VMs from Veeam and disaster recovery was executed as expected within our SLA.

What is most valuable?

Enables us to restore the VM when the needs arises and for disaster recovery.

What needs improvement?

  • Near-synchronous, better RPO and RTO snapshot-based takes a lot of space and resources.
  • They could look at different ways to replicate only new changes or blocks.
  • If we have to use Veeam for disaster recovery, we need to make sure that we can at least have up to 10 or 15 minutes of data before a disaster happens. Currently, you can have replication but this uses/eats up a lot of resources, on the network. Is there any other way they could increase RPO with less or limited network resources being used?

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We did have stability issues and we had to contact technical support. They were very helpful.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is very good.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn’t have any previous tools for this.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was straightforward. We did quite a bit of research and lab testing before the actual implementation. The white papers where very helpful

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing and licensing is better than the competitors, but it could be better.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We looked at Zerto and Acronis.

What other advice do I have?

If they are looking for backup and recovery, Veeam is the way to go. If they are looking for a high RPO and RTO, Zerto is the way to go.

Effective on-premise backups, reliable, and good technical support
Pros and Cons
  • "The backups we have been receiving from Veeam Backup Replication on-premise have been good."
  • "The cloud backups from Veeam Backup Replication have not been good. Addiotnaally, the backups of Office 365 and the overall performance can always be improved."

What is our primary use case?

I am using Veeam Backup Replication for backups.

What is most valuable?

The backups we have been receiving from Veeam Backup Replication on-premise have been good.

What needs improvement?

The cloud backups from Veeam Backup Replication have not been good. Addiotnaally, the backups of Office 365 and the overall performance can always be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Veeam Backup Replication for approximately seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not encountered any problems with the stability of Veeam Backup Replication.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good from Veeam Backup Replication.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support from Veeam Backup Replication is good.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Veeam Backup Replication can be quite expensive for Office 365 because its license is per user and not for the space that you use. You need one license for each user. If the user only uses a few files on one hard drive, you need a license to back up these files. It was better to have a license model, such as in the Cohesity solution. Cohesity has a license for a space that you use. It's more useful in this case because the license for backup data is on-premises is for CPU. The license is based on how many CPUs you have but it does not depend on how many users use the CPU.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have evaluated Cohesity. I have a demo version that they gave me.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Veeam Backup Replication an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
