Automation has improved alerts and file handling but script-based setup still needs simplification
OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is the automation tool I use. I think OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is good for creating complex rules because it's coding, but it takes time to learn how to use it. OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence works well if you know the syntax very well and you have experience in creating scripts or REXX syntax; it would be very good and is a good tool, but it takes time to learn, so that is for experienced staff to work with. I would rate the product a six from one to ten. I cannot think of any additional features in the next release of OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence.

Have integrated effective monitoring and seamless alerting with improved visualization capabilities
The most valuable feature of SCOM is its monitoring capability, and we have integrated SCOM with Grafana, which is a dashboarding tool. We have implemented and integrated this to create dashboarding of the SCOM monitoring system for the database, SQL, and the Linux servers we have configured in SCOM. We have created separate dashboarding for it, and the monitoring and creating rules and monitors in the management servers and management packs that SCOM provides are very useful for us. The alerting mechanism of SCOM has benefited our operations because we have modified the thresholds as per our internal requirements. We have configured threshold modifications for the CPU, memory, and especially for disk space. For routine disk space usage on the system, we have provided a separate threshold configuration.

Quotes from Members

Pros

"It’s invaluable for expediting the shutdowns/IPLs of our z/OS LPARs and monitoring our z/OS LPARs for issues/problems."
"OPS/REXX is valuable because it allows us almost unlimited flexibility in automating our system."
"It's very flexible. You can customize what you need to, which is good. For example, you can do your own coding inside the tool, make your own scripting tooling."
"OPS/MVS is much more intuitive to use, especially compared to Netview/SA/GDPS."
"The documentation is simple, easy to follow, and use. A limited, first-time systems programmer can do it, in that it is out-of-the-box almost functional."
"It's very secure, because it's a legacy application."
"It is an easy product to use and it is stable."
"Their technical support is incredible, immediately responsive, and even if it is not updated to Level 2 support sometimes, they chip in providing more detailed answers and options to fix the problem."
"The good reporting capabilities was one of the major functions which made us choose SCOM as the tool for handling MS application operations (only used for that, not the OS platforms)."
"Does a great job with Microsoft technologies."
"The System Center 2012 R2 is really powerful, all products work great together, is not so expensive anymore, easy to license, and can cover from end to end (Networking, Hardware layer, OS, App and services, ports, etc.)."
"ROI turned out to be pretty good since we had good centralized monitoring for our whole data center and all the outages were quickly escalated from the Command center to the relevant Team."
"This solution satisfies all of the requirements that we need for our Windows-based systems, so if you are using the Windows platform then this is an easy solution."
"I like the historical reporting of observer metrics, and it's a fairly user-friendly solution."
"This solution saves us a lot of work because it reduces the effort that is required in order to start monitoring."
"It discovers the components automatically, which is a fantastic thing."

Cons

"My impressions on OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is that it's quite difficult to use, as it relies mainly on the coding syntax and doesn't provide an easy-to-use GUI."
"One thing that comes to mind is the MQ interface. The last time we tried to use it, it seemed a little clunky."
"SSM - when OPSMVS is started, there is a choice of either assuming all microhooks are up or all are down and working from there. It would be better if there was a feature that could discover the true state of every microhook."
"One of the things we've been wanting to do is to be able to automate off of different highlighted messages without actually knowing what the message is."
"The mainframe TSO side still displays green screens."
"The interfaces to USS, CA UIM could be better."
"We're missing the boat. We don't have a graphical display and we need something beyond just pretty PC pictures for the other departments."
"It was a complex setup in the mainframe environment."
"I would like to see them improve their network monitoring."
"It lacks certain details that other products do better, like granular access and better application monitoring."
"Overall, support is not great but it's not bad."
"SCOM is not as straightforward in terms of user interface or general experience, which could be improved."
"They can focus more on cloud monitoring instead of on-premise monitoring. We should be able to monitor cloud-related applications."
"We didn't know the solution enough, and therefore, it took a while to set everything up correctly."
"Even though I think there are ways that this product is superior to most other solutions on the market, there are quite a few things that it does not do alone."
"The price could be improved."
