Automation has improved alerts and file handling but script-based setup still needs simplification
OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is the automation tool I use. I think OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is good for creating complex rules because it's coding, but it takes time to learn how to use it. OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence works well if you know the syntax very well and you have experience in creating scripts or REXX syntax; it would be very good and is a good tool, but it takes time to learn, so that is for experienced staff to work with. I would rate the product a six from one to ten. I cannot think of any additional features in the next release of OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence.

Have integrated effective monitoring and seamless alerting with improved visualization capabilities
The most valuable feature of SCOM is its monitoring capability, and we have integrated SCOM with Grafana, which is a dashboarding tool. We have implemented and integrated this to create dashboarding of the SCOM monitoring system for the database, SQL, and the Linux servers we have configured in SCOM. We have created separate dashboarding for it, and the monitoring and creating rules and monitors in the management servers and management packs that SCOM provides are very useful for us. The alerting mechanism of SCOM has benefited our operations because we have modified the thresholds as per our internal requirements. We have configured threshold modifications for the CPU, memory, and especially for disk space. For routine disk space usage on the system, we have provided a separate threshold configuration.

Pros

"OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence works well if you know the syntax very well and you have experience in creating scripts or REXX syntax; it would be very good and is a good tool, but it takes time to learn, so that is for experienced staff to work with."
"The ease of use and operations more than makes up for the licensing cost."
"Because we can define complex commands, the training of new operators is quicker. We can also put checks in place, that will prevent user errors."
"OPS/REXX is valuable because it allows us almost unlimited flexibility in automating our system."
"The documentation is simple, easy to follow, and use. A limited, first-time systems programmer can do it, in that it is out-of-the-box almost functional."
"OPS/MVS is doing things more efficiently than a person would do; they may make mistakes; finger checks here."
"We really do need this product, we have the necessity now because we have implemented for so long that we can't function without this product."
"OPS/MVS is much more intuitive to use, especially compared to Netview/SA/GDPS."
"It has good graphs of what is going on within the operating system."
"SCOM has improved our organization by simplifying the monitoring process. The system tells you what the bi-weekly or monthly usage was and that enables us to report this information to the manager. It shows if there was a connectivity issue that needs to be fixed and it's easier to concentrate on what needs to get fixed. System errors, therefore, get fixed faster."
"If SCOM is implemented correctly, it can take away the need for administrators to constantly monitor things or perform health checks."
"It's a lot more powerful than people realize, and I believe people become dissatisfied with it because of the complicated setup, but once it's up and running, it's pretty amazing at what it can do."
"It discovers the components automatically, which is a fantastic thing. The discovery works in an automatic way, and it has a dynamic way of discovering the components, assets, and applications. It doesn't require any manual intervention."
"This solution allows us to standardize all of the reports for monitoring the network, so it helps a lot for auditing purposes."
"Because it's Windows-based, it actually reports quite well. It reports everything you can think of on the Windows server and allows you to monitor anything. It's excellent for those in the Windows world as it's very good at it."
"The most valuable features for us are the monitoring, the health explorer, and the console."

Cons

"We're missing the boat. We don't have a graphical display and we need something beyond just pretty PC pictures for the other departments."
"The reason sometimes it is not stable, we do not have the expertise to write the script."
"The only issue we have is when we try to integrate with common services."
"The mainframe TSO side still displays green screens."
"I think, for me, I’d like to see more of its web base."
"Some of the command sequences are too long."
"It needs to have more compatibility/interfaces to other vendors’ products."
"Scalability is zero. It cannot be scaled because of its age."
"Microsoft SCOM is an old fashion beast of a monitoring solution that offers basic monitoring out of the box and for a dime because it comes with licenses they forced on us anyway."
"I would like to better be able to monitor Oracle processes."
"The price could be improved."
"At this point, only monitoring a network device is not good enough."
"Non Windows monitoring is fairly weak. Network device monitoring is not reliable."
"We believe that the dashboarding in SCOM needs to be improved or enhanced because it is not too expressive in reporting."
"In a future release, they should add email notification alerts."
"The solution can be improved by expanding to cloud usage."
