Automation has improved alerts and file handling but script-based setup still needs simplification
OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is the automation tool I use. I think OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is good for creating complex rules because it's coding, but it takes time to learn how to use it. OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence works well if you know the syntax very well and you have experience in creating scripts or REXX syntax; it would be very good and is a good tool, but it takes time to learn, so that is for experienced staff to work with. I would rate the product a six from one to ten. I cannot think of any additional features in the next release of OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence.

Have integrated effective monitoring and seamless alerting with improved visualization capabilities
The most valuable feature of SCOM is its monitoring capability, and we have integrated SCOM with Grafana, which is a dashboarding tool. We have implemented and integrated this to create dashboarding of the SCOM monitoring system for the database, SQL, and the Linux servers we have configured in SCOM. We have created separate dashboarding for it, and the monitoring and creating rules and monitors in the management servers and management packs that SCOM provides are very useful for us. The alerting mechanism of SCOM has benefited our operations because we have modified the thresholds as per our internal requirements. We have configured threshold modifications for the CPU, memory, and especially for disk space. For routine disk space usage on the system, we have provided a separate threshold configuration.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I would say yes, definitely use it."
"We went with the best automation solution available."
"It's very flexible. You can customize what you need to, which is good. For example, you can do your own coding inside the tool, make your own scripting tooling."
"If something breaks and it goes down when it's not supposed to, automation brings it right back up."
"It's definitely a very stable product."
"Compared to the products on the market, it is hands down the best one."
"It allows us to respond faster to issues. If there are issues that come out, we're able to capture a message and alert somebody about it."
"With the automation pieces we can bring this region up or take this region down, and it allows us to always meet our time critical requirements."
"The most valuable feature is the extensibility, as there are really no limits as to what you can do with it."
"This product helps companies detect problems before they cause any real problems like downtime."
"We can easily scale-up when we have a new global site, and it is just so easy to extend this solution to other sites, which is an advantage."
"SCOM should be a good choice for fresh IT environments based on Windows servers or switching from open-source monitoring tools."
"SCOM features object-based monitoring based on classes and discoveries and it gives you a lot of power and flexibility when you design and implement monitoring."
"It discovers the components automatically, which is a fantastic thing."
"The fact that I'm able to see all my devices and the status of them has been extremely useful."
"This solution helps our application teams by allowing them to drill further into issues and perform a root cause analysis."

Cons

"It needs to have more compatibility/interfaces to other vendors’ products."
"It’s a complex product. The initial installation is easy, but implementing various functions is a constant process."
"With stability, sometimes we do have problems with this product."
"SSM - when OPSMVS is started, there is a choice of either assuming all microhooks are up or all are down and working from there. It would be better if there was a feature that could discover the true state of every microhook."
"We're missing the boat. We don't have a graphical display and we need something beyond just pretty PC pictures for the other departments."
"There are, however, still some restrictions with sysplex vars as far as which kinds of rules you can use them in, which is also the case for OPSHFI vars."
"The only issue we have is when we try to integrate with common services."
"I've seen a mobile app that allows you to get the system status from your phone. That's a really nice feature that I’d like to see."
"All of the areas of reporting are very bad and need to be improved."
"There could be more integration of SIM in the solution."
"The dashboard features are not user-friendly for our management team, only for the technical department."
"Microsoft SCOM is an old fashion beast of a monitoring solution that offers basic monitoring out of the box and for a dime because it comes with licenses they forced on us anyway."
"I feel that the stability of the tool has room for improvement and I would like to see that in the next version."
"Microsoft needs to train more people about how to sell SCOM (and other System Center family products) because there are a lot of emerging technologies that are replacing Microsoft."
"It's not straightforward, SCOM is relatively noisy out of the box, so time is required to tailor the alerting, adjusting threshold triggers and over-riding alerts that are not required to ensure alerts captured are relevant and require action."
"Monitoring non Microsoft products and 3rd party applications."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"If you have a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, then this is part of the agreement."
"SCOM is part of the System Center suite and I am satisfied with the pricing."
"Two customers bought the enterprise agreement with Microsoft and paid for Software Assurance. But few customers don't buy it for Software Assurance. They just buy it and deploy it, and they think that we will be using it for the next five years."
"We have to pay for a license and the price is fine for us."
"There is a license needed to use this solution and it is paid annually."
"It is more expensive than the competition."
"SCOM's pricing is average."
"We have an enterprise agreement that includes this product as part of it."
