Provides effective backup for physical servers and needs improvements for cloud compatibility
We use OpenText Data Protector for Oracle database backup and some applications that run for database security OpenText Data Protector is good for physical backup, specifically for physical servers. It is effective for direct backups to EMC library or storage without using a repository. However,…

High-speed backup and strong deduplication have supported secure long-term data protection
In my opinion, what can be improved about Veritas NetBackup Appliance includes licensing. A mixed licensing model would be more helpful, such as terabytes plus virtual machines, terabytes plus instances, or number of instances. I believe this could work and create a new competitive licensing model against other products. Additionally, embedding Enterprise Vault or some of its features in the backup software would enable better competition with Commvault, which offers backup and archiving from the same console. For the next release of Veritas NetBackup Appliance, I would like to see improvements in licensing, increased deduplication ratio, and enhanced high availability. Having high availability for Veritas NetBackup Appliance without requiring virtual storage like Cohesity would be important. Improving the overall high availability of Veritas NetBackup Appliance would be beneficial.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Since HP Data Protector has the capability to do seamless integration with each of the OS's and hypervisors, this makes it a complete solution for my environment."
"The best thing I find with Data Protector as opposed to other products was the inter-compatibility with all different OSs; it's very OS agnostic and just seems to work, and the GUI interface is very intuitive and very easy to use."
"HP Data Protector integration with RMAN is very stable, robust and provides good diagnostics features to troubleshoot backup issues."
"Regarding scalability, it's unlimited with Data Protector. You can link multiple installations and let them work together. They can share backup devices. You have many possibilities with Data Protector. It's very proficient."
"It works excellently only with Oracle."
"I haven't experienced any crashes while using the solution...Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"For our data there is no price."
"The reliability of HP Data Protector is the most valuable feature for us."
"The tool's most valuable feature is recovery."
"This is a good backup interconversion solution because all the masters and the targets backups are on the same system, and it is easy to administrate for a single point of access for clients."
"In our legacy system, Veritas was the number one product for us in many ways to fill our backup requirements."
"The policy-based backup feature is very helpful."
"Installing this solution is very simple and takes perhaps five or ten minutes."
"The Veritas NetBackup Appliance is convenient because it’s a portable device and doesn’t require a lot of additional hardware or licenses like VPN solutions."
"The tool is easy to use, stable, and performs well, but it depends on the environment where it is deployed. It is leaning more toward huge enterprises where it is positioned. It needs to be as easy as others but addresses more complex requirements."
"The product is quite stable and reliable; there are no bugs or glitches and it doesn't crash or freeze, and its performance is good."

Cons

"What we wanted was disk-to-disk replication. After we got that nailed down, we then wanted to replicate from disk to tape. We were told that we can't do that, and then we were told it doesn't let you do it unless you buy it with a license."
"There have been some issues."
"It's very expensive compared to Veeam and other similar solutions."
"If you compare the solution with the same specific features and enhancements on another solution, Data Protector is expensive. This is especially true when compared to, for example, Veeam."
"Actually, we're moving away from Data Protector due to lack of support on newer operating systems and latest products."
"I would not recommend this product to my colleagues."
"With scalability, there are a few limitations. It's limited to certain platforms."
"Better documentation on how to backup the device itself through a flash drive or CD."
"The costing part is on the higher side. The reporting could also be improved."
"It would be a better solution if we were able to make more reports in regards to the backup system."
"Figuring out pricing from the site is challenging because the initial pricing mentioned on the site is too high."
"With technical support, it feels like they aren't well trained and it takes forever to get answers out of them."
"The reporting feature can be improved. At the moment, we can't acquire the exact information we need from NetBackup."
"The recovery backup has been problematic."
"When compared to other products from other vendors, it is somewhat difficult. Comparing it to competitors, it is slightly less intuitive than Commvault and NetWorker."
"More licensing options could be introduced to the software. It is currently based on capacity only. Compared to competitors, it is difficult to position it economically everywhere. From the usability point of view, they are making many improvements on new interfaces, the SaaS offering, etc."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing cost is too high."
"The product is cheaper than Commvault."
"Pricing for Micro Focus Data Protector is reasonable."
"There is a perpetual license involved in addition to support which needs to be renewed annually."
"In Data Protector, if you need extra features, you need to buy the agents for these features. Some of the features are Terabytes, some of them are agents. There's some complexity in the pricing and licensing."
"The licensing cost was not annual. We didn't pay any license. We paid when we deployed and we didn't pay for anything after that. There were no additional fees after the initial payment."
"Our licensing is on a capacity basis."
"Pricing/licensing is Data Protector's single best offering. In its most basic environment, the only license required is for whatever target device is required."
"There is a license required for this solution."
"I rate the tool's pricing an eight out of ten."
"This solution is expensive."
"Overall, Veritas is a good solution; the problem is the cost."
"Renewing subscriptions for appliance support is costly."
"The product's price is high."
"We pay annually. It is a huge figure for us."
"I cannot say whether our licensing costs are on a monthly or annual basis, as we have a global contract."
