Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I like the asynchronous replication and failover features. They are what I'm primarily using it for. The asynchronous replication is helpful because our servers are backed up continuously throughout the day. If anything goes wrong we just fail over immediately. That is a very nice feature to have.""High Availability is the best feature of product.""The StarWind products have enabled our organization to modernize stations where larger and more expensive equipment was not an option.""I save both physical and virtual space.""It has allowed us to save a lot of time and money by letting us create a vSAN within a Windows VM on the environment it controls.""The best part is the easy way it operates with a very clear GUI without any unnecessary items.""StarWind vSAN has allowed us to leverage our server infrastructure more completely without the need to add more hardware.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the support. They are excellent and you can learn a lot from the support team."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Pros →

"In general, being able to patch and not having to pay for SanDisk is the best thing about hyper-converged.""Ability to create multiple VMs.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS is flexible and has helped people to work from home during the pandemic.""Nutanix Acropolis AOS is stable. We didn't receive any concerns regarding any problems, The customers have no concerns about the reliability.""Some of the most valuable features of Nutanix Acropolis are that it's free from Nutanix and it's very stable.""The level of statistical performance data that it can confirm in real-time is extremely useful. I can see what my VM’s hosts and guests are doing from a single pane of glass and identify issues before they would otherwise become apparent.""One major thing that comes up again and again is stability. Our downtime is literally based on hardware upgrades that need to be done. Acropolis is very, very user friendly. You don't have to physically have a super IT guy to manage the system. You can actually give it to a younger guy to manage and there won't be problems. And if he makes a mistake, it's very, very easy to fall back and sort out the mistake.""The most valuable features of Nutanix Acropolis AOS are storage and hyper-converged. The solution is easy to use and the administration is very good."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pros →

"Being able to provide quality of service as promised.""Overall performance of the solution.""The quality of service for minimum iOS, to maximum iOS in a multi-terminal environment is very powerful. The SQL service feature is the best part of SolidFire.""Greater IOPS, speed, it's all-flash. So seeing that everything is going to all-flash, all SSDs, SolidFire fits right in there with the emerging trend in IT.""We can add a node, we add compute, we add storage, and we've had really good luck with that.""The dashboard is such that you don't need to be a storage expert to administer it.""SolidFire provides seamless performance across your storage system when you need to scale up. Other storage systems do not do that.""The most valuable feature of this solution is its scalability."

More SolidFire Pros →

Cons
"The documentation is good yet is still lacking in a few areas.""Being able to run StarWind vSAN on top of any free UNIX operating system to build a resilient iSCSI/FTP/SMB storage system would be useful.""The reconnection of the attached drives upon a reboot could be improved.""Maybe in the future, the replication will be supported in more cloud providers.""The only thing that I have any difficulty with is that in order to perform upgrades, it is required that the SANs be detached from the Hosts before that can happen.""I would definitely like to see quite a bit more on the monitoring side of things.""A better overall view of the different deployments could be beneficial, although this is difficult due to how flexible the solution is.""Proper training sessions should be included with the licensing."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"There is a feature that exists used for disaster recovery, but it requires an extra license. It should be included with the regular normal standard license.""This solution would be improved with built-in integration with Rubrik.""There could be better support for high power ESX and other cross platform applications.""I would like them to update their licensing to provide more features with their basic license.""The scalability of Nutanix Acropolis AOS needs improvement.""It does not have good backup feature tools, like having templates or being able to back up every two or three days.""They have offered some new features that I have not deployed so I assume that these issues might have been addressed already, but, at my time there was a networking problem.""Nutanix needs to improve network features like Passthrough – SR-IOV. It could be improved by supporting SR-IOV, if they had that support, I would not have needed to implement the VMWare vSAN."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Cons →

"One of the challenges we faced while using SolidFire was that the product line that we were using in our company was discontinued.""So feature-wise, I would say more reporting tools that could be merged into it.""The technical support is really bad and has to be improved.""When you set up the nodes, we have to serial into each one of these nodes to configure the IP ranges. It's still very easy, but it's time consuming.""Though it is a stable solution, its users may face some security issues at times...The security provided by the solution is one area that can be improved.""I think there is room for improvement needed with its storage capability. A bigger node is needed.""There is room for improvement with a focus on creating a centralized storage system, functioning similar to AWS.""It's a very good Windows-type solution. But we do a lot of legacy systems and the like. So it's getting that incorporated into it that would help us."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."
  • More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "We would probably use SolidFire more, except we're getting more bang for our buck with our purchases of ONTAP right now, and the deal we made with NetApp, so it's more of just a cost decision"
  • "The price of this solution is more expensive than others."
  • "Based on what I heard from other people, its price was on the higher side."
  • "On a scale where one is a high price and ten is a low price, I rate the solution between three and four. It is an expensive solution."
  • "It might be considered expensive, but when evaluating performance, it represents good value online because you pay for what you get."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
