We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Updates to server hardware are now painless and done during working hours with zero stress. We had a RAID failure a few months back, and nobody in the building even noticed and there was no after hours time used for repair.""They offer top-tier support.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the support. They are excellent and you can learn a lot from the support team.""It allows you to use ANY consumer or enterprise HDDs and SSDs, and that's a really great thing!""It is extremely stable.""Quick setup, great support, stability is great""The StarWind Virtual SAN management console is intuitive and easy to use.""It enables us to provide more solution options for our clients, with the reassurance that, when implemented, they will be efficient and stable."

"You need to send commands through the command-line interface(CLI). This could be improved. The commands are done better in VMware.""The cloud features in-site offering, which I found to be very interesting.""Flexibility. We're able to mix performance nodes with storage nodes easily. Unlike other vendors where, if we start a hyperconverged solution with them, we have to stick to a specific model, to a specific series with specific capabilities, with Nutanix it's very easy to mix and match the best solution, especially for a dynamic infrastructure like ours.""Most beneficial feature is simplicity, ease of use.""I have found the solution to be stable.""The simplicity when it comes to building your own automation has been excellent.""Data locality provides super-fast data access and ultra-low latency.""The ease of deployment is very good."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pros →

"The most valuable feature of the solution is the nice GUI.""The solution is scalable.""I rate Scale Computing support 10 out of 10. They're accessible and responsive.""The most valuable features are the appliance-type feel and that you don't need additional licenses as everything is built-in.""I like that Scale Computing HCR is slimmed down and gives me the features I need and not features that I don't need.""The initial setup is pretty straightforward.""The product's initial setup phase is too easy.""The most valuable feature of Scale Computing HC3 is if one of the devices fails, you won't even notice, the service maintains operation. The customers don't have to waste two, or three days on delays. Additionally, you do not have to waste time with recovery software, it is a lot easier."

Cons
"The documentation is good. However, if compared with competitors, it could be enhanced and made more professional.""With data verification, I would like to know how does the solution perform validation of data being synced between two VSANs.""Proper training sessions should be included with the licensing.""I wish they would improve the documentation for the beginner level as it's not very clear on the web page.""This product could be improved with the inclusion of new health check procedures.""Perhaps the developer should refine the product management through PowerShell.""It should be improved in the way it detects the right filesystem image after a complete shutdown of the system or in the case of disaster recovery.""StarWind relies on the underlying OS to manage the "SAN files" whether that would be a RAID volume, software RAID (such as LVM), etc. It would be useful if StarWind could incorporate the actual physical drive management inside of the solution, similar to Storage Spaces Direct."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"The patch updates of Nutanix Acropolis could be improved. I'm work on the corporate side, but I get feedback from our IT team that patch updates and other updates are taking a significantly longer time. This definitely needs to be resolved. We are in discussion with Nutanix regarding certain configuration issues we are having, so maybe something can be changed to ease these patch updates.""The solution doesn't support older systems, which can be a problem for some organizations who wish to implement it. It became a problem for us due to the fact that some of our systems are older.""The GUI for this solution needs improvement.""One thing I've noticed is that, when you do a shift from VMware to Nutanix, it opens the setup of the VM that's currently running. If people from another site double click on it, it opens the VM instead of the setup of the unit. So I would suggest that this could perhaps be switched. That is so far the only change I would like. I would like it if they could fix the instance where you double click on a VM and it opens the VM instead of the setup. That's the only thing that's a major bother to me.""The product needs improvement in the areas of SAN attachment for high capacity and high I/O profile workloads.""I would like to see a fuller integration with the public cloud. It would help the user enter the hybrid cloud infrastructure.""It already has the capability to integrate with the major cloud providers but, in an upcoming release, if there is a possibility to have it integrate with other cloud providers like IBM, Alibaba, and other moderate-level cloud providers, that would be good.""It's lacking in some features but overcompensating in others."

More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Cons →

"I would like bigger clusters with more than eight nodes.""The product struggles to cope with bigger workloads. In the next release, I'd like some backup solutions to be added.""Scale Computing HC3 said in an announcement they were going to integrate with a backup service which would be good. If they could do this it would be beneficial.""The product could use a better control center.""On the fly, you cannot do anything on Scale Computing HC3, though it is a very rarely needed area.""The snapshot technology takes up 500 times more space compared to other solutions.""Scale HC3 improvements would involve literally fixing up the replication.""I've had so many issues with the sales team when I was looking to make some improvements, and improve the performance. They would create so many excuses to force me to buy new nodes all the time and not let me add more memory to each node."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."
  • More StarWind Virtual SAN Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Able to grow with smaller, more linear increments of investment"
  • "The basic license that comes with the box allows basic virtualization features but advanced automation features would require an upgrade of licenses."
  • "I know Nutanix and VxRail have similar prices and licenses. Nutanix is a go-ahead if AHV is used as hypervisor because it is already embedded in the price."
  • "While cost may seem higher than your traditional 3-tier architecture, you need to look at the bigger picture. You're not just buying hardware here. You're buying a complete environment."
  • "Setup cost is minor, pricing is quite a bit (we have a 7-node-cluster for about 450K EUR with 2 vGPU-nodes for Citrix) but that includes hardware, software, and support."
  • "The price is good but I think there is still room for improvement on the price."
  • "Extra features should not be so expensive. We would love to be able to use or even just try some of the extra features without having to buy them. Buying those features is just as expensive as buying vSphere licenses, so the cost savings is nullified."
  • "Work close with your InfraTeam and discuss with Nutanix the best way to achieve sizing and price that are right for you."
  • More Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure (NCI) Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "I pay for Scale Computing HC3 and it includes customer service for one year. We paid for an additional year for customer service but that includes the updates and everything for the software. Additionally, the licensing is for Windows, which is the same for everybody."
  • "I give the pricing a nine out of ten."
  • "rate HC3's pricing a five out of ten since it is affordable."
  • "The product is worth the money, but I would not say it's very cheap or very expensive."

I urge all to look past the hot air and hype frenzy that are going on, because in the end, the HC platforms have to be aligned and congruent to the organization’s data architecture and business plans. The announcement of Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant on Integrated Systems (read hyper convergence) has put Nutanix as the leader of the pack as of August 2015. Clearly, many of us get caught up because it is the “greatest feeling in the world”. However, this faux feeling is not reality because there are many factors that made the pack leaders in the Magic Quadrant (MQ). First of all, the MQ is about market perception. There is no doubt that the pack leaders in the Leaders Quadrant have earned their right to be there. Each company’s revenue, market share, gross margin, company’s profitability have helped put each as leaders in the pack. However, it is also measured by branding, marketing, market perception and acceptance and other intangible factors. Secondly, VMware EVO: Rail has split the market when EMC has 3 HC solutions in VCE, ScaleIO and EVO: Rail. Cisco wanted to do their own HC piece in Whiptail (between the 2014 MQ and 2015 MQ reports), and closed down Whiptail when their new CEO came on board. NetApp chose EVO: Rail and also has the ever popular FlexPod. That is why you see that in… Read more →
