Easy to set up with good documentation and helpful support
I'm using it for a customer The packet flow switch is the most valuable aspect of the solution.  It's an easy product to set up. We can scale the solution if we need to. It's stable.  The documentation is well-written and quite useful. It's compatible with other products.  Under the pocket flow…

Unified monitoring has improved end-to-end visibility and reduced detection time across apps
When we have too many detectors in place for one particular app, such as when I have created 50+ detectors through my account, the entire page becomes a bit loaded when creating the 51st detector, feeling heavy and taking time to load. Additionally, it throws random errors; for example, when we try to save one detector, it might throw some random error which is not even related, with something else being wrong, not that particular error, but the underlying root cause might be different. Sometimes the error is just "some problem occurred," and we are not able to point out what the real cause is. This mainly happens when we have too many detectors or too many alerts in place rather than a standard number. One more thing is in the alert rules; if we have a main general alert, and instead of creating a new detector, we are adding a new rule under one detector, when the number of rules also increases, such as when we have 10 or 15 rules under one generic detector, that again creates the same kind of problem, taking some time to save that particular newly added rule, and it might not save at times, just keeps on spinning. Those are the two drawbacks which I spotted recently; other than that, everything looks perfect.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We use it for monitoring whenever we update a new circuit or site."
"The most valuable features are speed and cost."
"It allows us to get quicker resolutions. We can see exactly what is using up the bandwidth, so we can assist end users."
"When we have mobile operators who are signal partners, where one is the roaming host and another is the roamer, we are able to see their traffic. Their packets are able to detect if any faults to develop, and at what point they fail."
"The ability to troubleshoot customers' connectivity has been very beneficial."
"It helps us to assist our customers to isolate problems. If it is us who is having the problem, then we can use it to streamline the process."
"I love the single pane of glass view. It makes it easier to not have to navigate everywhere. It allows more simplistic visibility, without having to go from tool to tool to tool, or from window to window to window."
"The product is stable. I have never had any issue where we have lost an InfiniStream, or visibility from that particular InfiniStream, throughout the bank."
"I like the fact that Splunk APM makes it easy to connect to the application database and run queries against the data."
"Initially, before Splunk, we had a long time to resolve issues; now, with Splunk Observability Cloud, we will be able to solve them quickly and know exactly where the issue is."
"The feature I appreciate the most about Splunk Observability Cloud is Synthetic Monitoring."
"The best features in Splunk Observability Cloud are the metrics; I can see any logs or anything related to the server or services we want to monitor, and the metrics are a good function."
"It's starting to help reduce our Mean Time to Detect (MTDD) because the visibility we gain is unprecedented, allowing us insight into applications that we've never had before."
"Splunk Observability Cloud has helped improve my operational performance; previously, we used Elastic for similar purposes, and this has allowed us much more visibility into what we're working on with usable dashboards and metrics, which has been awesome."
"The Add data feature lets you gather any type of log and easily analyze it."
"Dashboards help the application support teams to have a quick look at how their systems are running. It helps other teams as well."

Cons

"The technology goes end-of-life on us every year, which is why I am looking forward to vSTREAM. I don't like when devices go end-of-life on us so quickly. If we can get more of an advanced notice of when an end-of-life is brought up, because our certification process within the organization takes a while."
"Only problems that we have had are fiber issues going into the TAPs or vSTREAMs, which are usually local site issues."
"I would like to see an improved level of stitching between IPs."
"There is a timeout feature that we have been asking for awhile."
"The stability depends on who is using the tool, because you only can get as much out of the tool as you put into it. There are a lot of patches for this particular environment, so you have to keep on them. If you lose track of them, then the product is not useful anymore."
"The scalability has some limitations and quirks to it. I would like to be able to upgrade rather than replace the whole thing."
"Being able to manage the packet flow switches in nGeniusONE would be great."
"The monitoring and reporting tool needs improvement. Users want more information, such as the level of detail when doing a packet analysis. They want more detail to be able to isolate down to a specific point."
"There is room for improvement in the alerting system, which is complicated and has less documentation available. We sometimes encountered issues in setting up alerts."
"There are always areas for potential improvement to enhance its functionality and user experience."
"The solution's machine learning deployment is hard and should be made user-friendly."
"We still use Splunk Enterprise licensing. A lot of the newer features go into Splunk Cloud before Enterprise. We're not looking to switch our licensing over, so we're falling behind on the newer features."
"In Splunk Observability Cloud, I notice room for improvement in synthetic monitoring. It does not provide output based on server names."
"The deployment can be quite complex."
"They do not have all the features that I expect right now."
"There is a lot of room for improvement with the automation."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I would like it to be more scalable with less spend."
"The scalability is good, but it comes at a cost. E.g., if you need 100 InfiniStream because you are sending gigs or terabytes of data to one InfiniStream, then you will have to purchase another InfiniStream, which are not cheap."
"It can be scalable. It just costs too much. With a company as big as ours, it gets too expensive to accommodate every single site."
"To capture more with the solution that we bought, you have to buy another InfiniStreamNG, and there are only four ports in the back."
"This product could be cheaper."
"The price is a little high."
"Splunk APM is a very cost-efficient solution."
"The pricing is based on several factors, including the scale of deployment."
"The solution's pricing is costly."
"Splunk's infrastructure monitoring costs can be high because our billing is based on data volume measured in terabytes, rather than the number of devices being monitored."
"Splunk offers a 14-day free trial and after that, we have to pay but the cost is reasonable."
"This is an expensive solution."
"The price of Splunk APM is less than some of its competitors."
"Splunk Observability Cloud is expensive."
