Reporting on insurance finances has become robust and supports detailed geo-spatial analysis
I am quite satisfied with the reporting part of the product. However, compared to other tools, the modeling part is not as strong. Data modeling is not as easy on MicroStrategy as it is on other platforms. I have worked with the administration tool and the Architect tool for MicroStrategy, but creating a star schema is not as easy compared to other tools. Creating hierarchies and the modeling part is challenging because data modeling is one of the most important aspects of any BI project. If you can create a star schema or Snowflake schema easily, then report building becomes straightforward. Additionally, MicroStrategy's Workstation tool compared to Developer still lacks some functionality that can be done more easily on the Developer side. Workstation is a great tool, but they have not given it full functionality.

Real-time executive visibility has replaced spreadsheets and drives daily sales decisions
Toucan Toco offers excellent features, including the quick ability to create Stories and KPIs based on the data that we're storing in our data warehouse. We leverage the functionality within Toucan Toco to quickly build out a code-free environment, providing a code-free way of sharing both graphs and KPIs to track and deliver visibility to key data elements. Toucan Toco has positively impacted our organization because we previously were using Excel spreadsheets to share data out to the team, and now we're using Toucan Toco to share information in real time. This shift to real-time sharing has brought clarity to consistent metrics and real-time visibility to activity.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is a good tool to help our customers visually see loads of data."
"Business users can create their reports once architected Available on all devices Customization options available at coding and visual levels"
"There are people who are using MicroStrategy as transaction services."
"The OLAP functionality of this product is best in class."
"The technical support is quite good."
"There is a ROI from MicroStrategy."
"We have ramped up user adoption."
"It keeps BI in the hands of everyone, rather than a developer or an analyst."
"Toucan Toco has positively impacted our organization because we previously were using Excel spreadsheets to share data out to the team, and now we're using Toucan Toco to share information in real time."

Cons

"The self-service BI part of the tool, Visual Insights, which is designed to provide the business the ability to create interactive dashboard using visualization, is not very great."
"You can now do data blending at the document level and data blending allows you to show results from different data sets in one grid, so to speak. I want to be able to create a data set that can receive data from multiple cubes, have it in one data set, and then bring it to the document, because then I can reuse it for other documents. Now, I have to do it in a document and then it's less reusable, because if I want to share that functionality, I have to copy the document, strip a lot of things, and then work on that basic element that I've built in that document."
"We did encounter stability issues. We had a serious metadata corruption problem."
"Any product or feature request takes years to get, if at all."
"Some of the basic features such as Axis Label formatting on Graphs, Quick Switch on mobile (iOS), properly updated documentation on their websites, and faster enhancement fixes when needed for customers/businesses that are simple in nature rather than holding it for longer durations to fix."
"Even though self-service capabilities have been greatly improved, the basic reporting layout is still behind similar products."
"I would like to see the enterprise version available in a demo or as a trial version."
"Visual Insight, as I see, has improved a lot but it still lacks the analytics capability of other tools such as Tableau."
"I chose nine because Stories can cascade on top of each other and be a bit complicated when they create multiple data sets underneath the Stories to manage."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There have been actual direct bottomline impacts in terms of extra revenue created from the reporting solutions."
"The pricing for MicroStrategy is always on the higher side. They should seriously start thinking about their pricing and licensing strategy."
"Additional costs are associated with maintenance."
"They can improve its licensing. It is a bit expensive as compared to Microsoft and other tools."
"They need to work on their license structure. They are not competitive against somebody like SAP BusinessObjects. We had a quote that was almost a third the price, coming from SAP BusinessObjects, and it's not a better platform. It's not cheaper. They do concurrent user licensing, while MicroStrategy does named user licensing, and that was literally the only difference. But it made a $500,000 difference. They've got to do something to make themselves more competitive. Maybe it's assessing your business users and what you really expect them to use, and maybe giving a reduced price on that. But they are already giving us a 60% discount and they were still a million or so above, over a three-year time period. That doesn't account for synergies as we get from on-site resources that are already available, but I thought that that was a big, big deficit for them."
"For larger businesses, the pricing is logical."
"It would be nice if there was a sticker price that says, "This software costs this amount of money." But I think that's just indicative of all software vendors. A lot of people are in it to make money, commissions, so it's just the nature of the business. But I would like to see more transparency, more equality, on pricing. Some people get better deals than others, I think."
"There is no subscription, I am using the free version."
