Has improved development quality and speed but has introduced persistent IDE slowdowns
In recent years, the IDE has been more buggy and slower, and although there have been more features added, I would like to see more stability, as some areas that used to work for a fairly long time are now slower in my development, which feels like a step back. I choose a seven mainly due to the issues we've faced with slowdowns and bugs during development, while runtime has been very stable, and the overall output on Mendix platform is still good; there is definitely some room for improvement, and I would probably have given it an eight or even a nine if those issues weren't hurting my developer output for the past few years. Overall, Mendix platform is stable, but the IDE could be better.

Have faced challenges continuing use due to support discontinuation despite past effectiveness
There was no reporting functionality in the version we used. It all had to be done by another BI or reporting platform, so we used to actually migrate data from SAP Mobile Platform to that platform. Inherently, that product at that time had no reporting capabilities. It had to be done through some other platform. The only issue arose when SAP actually marked it as end-of-support. Otherwise, as a platform, it was fantastic. I don't think there was any major concern we had with the product itself. But when you mark any platform as end-of-support and we, being the OEM partners, it definitely created significant challenges for us.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Mendix has positively impacted our organization as we can construct or build prototypes easily, allowing us to do this in a short amount of time."
"The software is mainly designed and built by business engineers instead of software engineers, which leads to an immediate fit between delivered software and what the users really want."
"You can scale the solution."
"Everybody can learn it easily with available resources."
"Mendix has made a great deal of effort to provide its developers a healthy, modern environment for developing."
"It is really a rapid platform where you can minimize the time-to-market, where you can also engage the customer from business perspectives throughout the entire cycle of the development."
"Dashboards are valuable; it is easier to visualize data, and it is low code where the developers can still develop in Java, which to us is very appealing."
"Expect to half your delivery time for new products/services to business."
"It's not that difficult to set up."
"Technical support is helpful."
"If we work with the mobile extension of the ERP platform, we save time."
"The initial setup is not overly complex."
"The platform independence is great; I can use it across mobile devices, it's stable, and technical support is helpful."
"Two of the very fascinating features that make SAP Mobile Platform stand out from other platforms are its offline capability and integration capability."
"It's a wonderful solution from a design perspective and from a scalability perspective."
"Both platforms, the SAP Mobile Platform, and SAP, are highly valuable for our company because they facilitate integration, which can be expensive. It's very convenient to connect and create billing accounts through the SAP Mobile Platform."

Cons

"As far as I know, the licence is costly."
"The area of this product that needs improving is the templates in which the user uses to create documents."
"One needed improvement I have noticed while working with Mendix is in native mobile development, which still lacks features available in other development environments like Android Studio or Flutter."
"I struggle with solutions like Mendix in terms of creating enterprise solutions."
"Mendix can be improved in that, while it is good at pricing, it lacks a small business budget project for startups wanting to build their portfolio."
"The initial setup is more complex. I've also noticed that people that have a first-time interaction with it find it more difficult to grasp."
"You need experienced programmers and developers to understand this solution."
"The platform still has many areas for improvement. If I compare apples to apples, the PWA features of Mendix could be improved, for example, I wouldn't recommend creating a B2C or B2B marketplace or web portals on Mendix, but there's a tendency for people to still do it through the systems provided by my company, particularly implement B2B or B2C marketplace, versus using eBay or Shopify. On the web portal front, Mendix still needs to improve."
"Installation is extremely painful."
"The cost of the SAP Mobile Platform is high, and there is room for improvement in its pricing."
"The only thing which basically is bothering us now is that SAP has announced that they'll be ending the support on the SAP platform."
"The licensing model is a bit dated."
"If I have to go for hybrid development, it is still too complex of development, per se."
"We don't have wider reporting capabilities within mobile services. There is some reporting functionality, which I would classify as very basic, just to indicate how many devices are being connected, but it's not that comprehensive in terms of reporting."
"If it was low code or no code it would be ideal."
"The tool is not easy or simple to integrate with other infrastructures."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Licensing costs are similar to those for all other IT technology, but they vary by region."
"Mendix is not open source, but its license cost is cheap, particularly when compared to the Appian license. The license model would depend on how many users you have and how many applications you are creating. If you are creating a single app, you just need to have a single app license, so it's free. If you want a multiple app license to cover two thousand or three thousand users, for example, internal users or external users, then you need to pay for the license. There's also a license model for above three thousand or four thousand, or five thousand internal and external users."
"Initially, we started with a year for approximately $25,000, and if we need to expand the number of seats then we will increase it."
"Its cost is higher than competitors. The cost mostly includes licensing. It is charged per user. The cost model could be better. When you have a big company, what does per user mean? If I have a company where I have 40,000 people who will go to access it but only 200 do, how do you license it and who do you pay for? If they hit it once, do you pay for it? The licensing is complex for a big company. It is easy for us to buy all we can eat, get an enterprise license agreement, and call it good."
"Mendix licensing cost is based on the number of apps you have on the server. At the basic level, it is free of charge, so that seems reasonable, but once you go beyond that, and when it comes to the number of users on the app, that basic structure doesn't work, and the pricing tends to get a little bit steep."
"From a commercial point of view, we would like them to change that they currently sell it as a platform, but as a customer you have to decide upfront the usage of the platform. We would like to have Mendix sell it as a pay as you go model: You pay for what you use, and you don't pay for what you don't use."
"Mendix seems a bit expensive. But in terms of wanting to have less developers and higher velocity, the total cost of ownership is fine. It's not cheap, though."
"There is a license required to use Mendix. The solution's price is high, but it is best suited for enterprise companies that have the budget. It is not for small or medium-sized businesses."
"If you already paying for an SAP license and have SAP products that you are using, the price for SAP Mobile Platform is negligible."
"The cost of SAP is extremely high, and it's not affordable for everyone."
"The tool is expensive. I rate the tool's price as an eight or nine out of ten."
