Have faced challenges continuing use due to support discontinuation despite past effectiveness
There was no reporting functionality in the version we used. It all had to be done by another BI or reporting platform, so we used to actually migrate data from SAP Mobile Platform to that platform. Inherently, that product at that time had no reporting capabilities. It had to be done through some other platform. The only issue arose when SAP actually marked it as end-of-support. Otherwise, as a platform, it was fantastic. I don't think there was any major concern we had with the product itself. But when you mark any platform as end-of-support and we, being the OEM partners, it definitely created significant challenges for us.

Unified codebase has reduced mobile development effort but now faces SDK and support limits
You can still develop public-facing apps with Xamarin Platform, but there are restrictions on Xamarin Platform App Store and Google Play that prevent you from publishing your apps because they require you to use their latest SDKs and their latest libraries. Xamarin Platform, having been discontinued a couple of years ago, is no longer compatible with the latest libraries and SDKs offered by Google and Apple. So you have to use obsolete libraries and obsolete packages, which means that when you try to publish them, your Google Play or Apple App Store will prevent you from doing that because you have not used the latest libraries. Right now, Xamarin Platform has been discontinued. Xamarin Platform had its flaws, and there were known issues. Xamarin Platform has a big community of developers, so even though there are known issues and flaws, there are known workarounds. In terms of stability, I would rank it at 7.5, but I believe 7 would be a more accurate rating, so 7 out of 10.

Pros

"Two of the very fascinating features that make SAP Mobile Platform stand out from other platforms are its offline capability and integration capability."
"The initial setup is not overly complex."
"The platform independence is great; I can use it across mobile devices, it's stable, and technical support is helpful."
"Both platforms, the SAP Mobile Platform, and SAP, are highly valuable for our company because they facilitate integration, which can be expensive. It's very convenient to connect and create billing accounts through the SAP Mobile Platform."
"It's not that difficult to set up."
"One valuable feature of SAP Mobile Platform is its enterprise-grade standard and maintained APIs, available out of the box for easy integration with various systems."
"It's a wonderful solution from a design perspective and from a scalability perspective."
"Ericsson is still working in Pakistan, running one of the biggest mobile wallet platforms in the country, and if SAP hadn't marked it as end-of-life, we could have penetrated this market for at least two to three more customers."
"On the market, compared to everyone else, they're the top solution."
"The solution's most valuable asset is its shared code base in C# that is better for large apps."
"The ability to reuse significant amounts of code between platforms, have a single code repository, and a single development team for all platforms has massive advantages."
"It is a true native solution, and we can use the cross-platform framework."
"Cross-platform development saves time and provides consistencies."
"Because of the C# programming language, we can train our .NET developers to learn Xamarin and develop mobile apps easily."
"The best part while using the Xamarin Platform is a cross-platform application. We could execute iOS and Android while writing a single line of code."
"The most valuable features are: One language for all platforms: C#; XAML for UI in Xamarin.Forms; provides 100 percent coverage of APIs on each platform."

Cons

"The only issue arose when SAP actually marked it as end-of-support. Otherwise, as a platform, it was fantastic."
"The licensing model is a bit dated."
"One drawback is that SAP Mobile Platform apps are only available through the browser, making offline capability more challenging to implement."
"SAP has announced that they'll be ending the support on the SAP platform."
"If I have to go for hybrid development, it is still too complex of development, per se."
"The cost of the SAP Mobile Platform is high, and there is room for improvement in its pricing."
"We don't have wider reporting capabilities within mobile services. There is some reporting functionality, which I would classify as very basic, just to indicate how many devices are being connected, but it's not that comprehensive in terms of reporting."
"The tool is not easy or simple to integrate with other infrastructures."
"It needs offline sync capabilities to store data on devices persistently."
"The Xamarin.Forms could improve."
"I would like to see hot reload, similar to what Flutter has out-of-the-box. There is "Live Reload" but it’s still in preview and was only recently announced."
"Technical support could be better. We often get support from the community and only sometimes from the Xamarin team."
"I feel that the Android AppCompat library creates a lot of issues. A lot of development time is often wasted solving these issues."
"Xamarin Platform, having been discontinued a couple of years ago, is no longer compatible with the latest libraries and SDKs offered by Google and Apple, so you have to use obsolete libraries and obsolete packages, which means that when you try to publish them, your Google Play or Apple App Store will prevent you from doing that because you have not used the latest libraries."
"In Xamarin.Forms, we have the option to preview our UI designs, but the functionality can be limited. So, this is not fully functional. Since I have some knowledge of iOS, where when you write code or design in the storyboard, your design is immediately visible in the preview."
"The problem that I faced was that the communication, the roles, and the responsibilities, weren't defined between Microsoft and Xamarin, that's really where the problem was in my opinion."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The cost of SAP is extremely high, and it's not affordable for everyone."
"If you already paying for an SAP license and have SAP products that you are using, the price for SAP Mobile Platform is negligible."
"The tool is expensive. I rate the tool's price as an eight or nine out of ten."
"Xamarin Platform is open-source, but there are fees for deployment, the API Store and Play Store, and using third-party libraries."
"Xamarin Platform is open-source, so it is free to use."
"Xamarin Platform is a free open-source solution."
"There is no requirement for a license. It is available for free as an open-source product."
"For personal use, the Community Edition is free."
