The most effective features of MicroStrategy for data analysis in my experience are the security, the metadata management, and the administration, along with the options of different workarounds available to accommodate different types of requirements. MicroStrategy's data visualization capabilities are great, and I would rate them nine out of 10.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features of Kyvos are reconciliation and its ability to query big data."
"Working as a BI Consultant, I have to develop different analyses, reports and dashboard documents to analyze the status of different business measures."
"With all the APIs it's very scalable."
"It scales well. It used to have only a max of four I-servers, but I think recently, somewhere in version 10, they doubled that, so you can have eight I-servers now."
"I found the ability to create self-reports very valuable."
"We value the ability to build dashboards and reports in a relatively simple way, teach end users how to do their own reports and dashboards making the process cheaper and faster, and import data from a grand variety of sources and combine them into a single report or dashboard, skipping the expensive ETL process or validating it before a robust construction."
"Transaction Services, that was really the part of the tool that made it very compelling for us, because it gave the opportunity to drive action."
"Our BI consultants single out MicroStrategy BI, as the solution proves to be efficient and full of capabilities: large volume data is easy to process, with the capability to tweak the attributes for complex reports and dashboards."
"The aesthetic capabilities of the dashboarding functionality are probably the most impressive."

Cons

"Since I couldn't find any tutorials or a handbook, I had some initial difficulty understanding the UI and the whole interface of Kyvos."
"The implementation itself was pretty straightforward. The tricky part was understanding MicroStrategy's licensing model, which was a bit convoluted back then."
"Data access could be improved. MicroStrategy has a data import capability but it only works for data in an Excel spreadsheet or a CSV file."
"Its price should be lower. In terms of features, what we have is quite encompassing right now."
"There needs to be better visualization."
"They need to do a better job In its ability to allow end users to produce their own reports, metrics, and self-service business intelligence."
"You can now do data blending at the document level and data blending allows you to show results from different data sets in one grid, so to speak. I want to be able to create a data set that can receive data from multiple cubes, have it in one data set, and then bring it to the document, because then I can reuse it for other documents. Now, I have to do it in a document and then it's less reusable, because if I want to share that functionality, I have to copy the document, strip a lot of things, and then work on that basic element that I've built in that document."
"There are a lot of offerings, and we are not fully using everything to its advantage."
"The UI seems klutzy with its manual entry."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"There is no subscription, I am using the free version."
"We are waiting to switch to Microsoft Power BI because MicroStrategy is too costly."
"The pricing is fair."
"The pricing list itself is not publicly accessible, so it's a bit opaque."
"All BI software vendors' list prices are high. It's about a price that fits the customer's needs. And I think MicroStrategy has some flexibility in its pricing model where we can easily demonstrate a total cost of ownership comparison against any of the other players."
"The price of MicroStrategy is reasonable."
"It would be nice if there was a sticker price that says, "This software costs this amount of money." But I think that's just indicative of all software vendors. A lot of people are in it to make money, commissions, so it's just the nature of the business. But I would like to see more transparency, more equality, on pricing. Some people get better deals than others, I think."
"They can improve its licensing. It is a bit expensive as compared to Microsoft and other tools."
