Executive Summary
Updated on May 11, 2022

We performed a comparison between Jira and Micro Focus Alm Octane based on our users’ reviews in four categories. After reading all of the collected data, you can find our conclusion below.

  • Ease of Deployment: Jira’s users say installation and setup are straightforward and simple. In contrast, Micro Focus users say its setup is very complex, especially if you have a shared workspace concept.

  • Features: Ease of use is one of the most valuable features Jira users mentioned. There are a lot of graphs and tracking. They love the Issue Navigator feature, which lets you customize user stories. The integration of third-party vendors into their marketplace is functional. There are downsides, though. The Epic Link feature is not user-friendly when the background is dark. Capturing metrics is also challenging.

Regarding Micro Focus ALM Octane, reviewers say key features are usability and ease of learning. Users also say it is very intuitive to use. The reporting capabilities are another favorite feature because there are a lot of predefined reports. However, the security integration could be improved. Users also would like to see more customization in the reporting features.
  • Pricing: Jira’s users consider the price affordable at the entry level. However, the price for upper tiers is steep. Micro Focus users consider the price affordable, although when compared with Jira, it’s on the higher side.

  • Service and Support: Several Jira users state that they work with a support company. The ones that used Jira support say technical support is excellent, knowledgeable, and responsive. Micro Focus users say the technical support is also great, with almost instant feedback for easy tickets.

Comparison Results: Based on the parameters we compared, Jira is a bit ahead of Micro Focus. Our reviewers found Micro Focus to be more complex to install and to have weaker security integrations. Its price point is more pleasing than Jira’s however.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I like seeing which tickets are open and what our response rate is. They have a lot of good metrics in their system to see what's going on.""I like the test cases in Jira. The orange dash items view was great, and I like the features and layout of the data. It's quite different, and people are now getting their items so quickly.""The dashboards are useful.""Jira offers tools for managing projects using Agile methodology. I think it is good to encourage the development team to use Jira, so that the organization benefits from the proper execution of projects on time. Basically, it helps our organization to execute in a better way.""Jira is flexible and accessible for the end-user. It lets users track their requests. The look and feel are good for our purposes.""Provides good output and is user-friendly.""A most valuable feature involves the ability to customize the entries and to update them quickly.""I have found the tracking, project and task management most valuable in this solution."

"We like Micro Focus ALM Octane because its performance is okay, and its stability is okay, so we use it a lot. The platform is easy to use.""It's more streamlined because we have it all under one umbrella. And once the business requirements and rules have been created, we can do test cases and apply them to the business rules.""The filtering options are very good once you learn them. The document reports are also valuable. You can create reports in Word and PDF formats. That's very useful.""The most useful feature of Micro Focus ALM Octane is the dashboards, they are easy to use.""The defect management gives us full-fledged capabilities for handling defects, including capturing the details of the defects and even screenshotting the defect cases. The defect management is comprehensive.""Octane works well with the Jira portfolio to track the project with two methods: Agile and Waterfall. We can track all the testing in Waterfall or Agile and synchronize it with Agile tools.""The solution natively supports Agile-Waterfall hybrid software development at an enterprise scale. This is very important to us. Because even though the company wishes to go Agile, we still have projects which follow a Waterfall methodology. In order for us to accommodate both, we needed some sort of hybrid system. Because if we are using a fully Agile system, then the reporting might not be correctly extracted.""On the user side, what I like a lot is the reporting capabilities. There's no tool, to my knowledge, that gets anywhere close to Octane at the moment when it comes to the reporting capabilities. I can do everything with the reporting. There's nothing missing. I have all the options. I can create graphs, including graphs of several types and looks."

Cons
"There is a difference between their cloud and their server versions. The next-gen project, which is an advanced feature that allows you to visualize the road map of your delivery over multiple products and over time, is not available yet for the sever version. It appears there in the list, but it's still not right. I've tried to use it many times and I am watching the device show their tracker, but it seems they intentionally want this to increase the utilization of the cloud instead of the server. It is really a nice feature and it's a shame that we don't have it.""Stability is an area of concern and it needs improvement, otherwise, it's a good product.""Lacks some common building block approaches to certain things.""The reporting needs to be better.""We have gone through several version changes and some of those changes have not been intuitive. There was a learning curve and we had some complaints internally about the changes, such as the new interface.""Reporting is something Jira could work on. The reporting capabilities should have the same flexibility we see in Excel, including the ability to manipulate data and create graphs. They need to have that, so we don't need to export to a spreadsheet.""It would be very practical if you can more freely reach the information that is already inside the system. Currently, we have to buy add-ons for it. There is a lot of information in the Jira system that you can handle only through add-ons. You cannot reach such information on your own. If you want to use this information, which is already in the system, you have to buy some add-on to use. For example, information about how much time an assignee is spending on a ticket is there in the system, but you cannot access it without an add-on. JQL is a very good way to reach the data inside Jira. If we can reach more objects, even through JQL, it would be great.""We'd like to see more collaboration tools implemented within the product itself."

More Jira Cons →

"I would like to see the mobile testing improved so that we can simply select a mobile device, then specify what parameters we want, and the testing will be run based on that.""What could be improved in Micro Focus ALM Octane is its integration with Jira.""It could use just some small improvements. I would like additional features, like planning features, user story mapping, or connection to collaboration tools.""The limitation of Octane is that we can't do a release outside of the sprint. We can only plan the release in the sprint. With Agile and JIRA tools, we can plan the release outside the sprint and do a global release of all the projects from the sprint.""Technical support can be slow.""Updating items, sorting, bulk updates—these things could have a bit more flexibility, but it's still possible to do them.""The cluster architecture that we implemented was server to server communication: Octane application to Elasticsearch and Elasticsearch to another Elasticsearch service. Recently, we found this is a security gap. The Octane application is interacting with Elasticsearch server, but that was missing from the requirements and prerequisites in the setup. The Micro Focus team has not given advice on how to implement authentication-based communication between Octane to Elasticsearch, and we found it as a gap later, then our security team asked us to fix that gap. So, there was a lot of time spent on rework.""The reporting needs to be improved and allow for customization. I want to build my own widgets, but I don't want to use the ones already in the system. I want to build mine from scratch."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "I don't feel that price is an issue."
  • "It is not too expensive. It is just comparative to other tools like Microsoft Teams."
  • "I am not sure if the client is using a commercial version. I think it is on a per-user basis, and it is around 15 Canadian dollars for a user, but I'm not sure. It also has a free version."
  • "As a company, we get a subsidized price, and it's lower than what's quoted on their website."
  • "We are using the enterprise license which is nice because it ensures that we always have the latest versions of Jira software."
  • "Its price is fine, but we would like it to be less expensive. We are paying on a yearly basis."
  • "We are a regional research and education institute. We're using the free license provided for educational institutes."
  • "One of my customers told me that they were receiving better pricing for a similar tool from Microsoft."
  • More Jira Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "Going forward, I think we will want to explore adding more licenses."
  • "The solution has reduced our testing costs."
  • "Microsoft is a big challenge for Micro Focus when it comes to pricing because they are much cheaper. But it definitely depends on the complexity of the environment. If it has multiple technologies, at that point, looking at other options and Microsoft would be a feasible approach."
  • "The comparison is always with Jira, so the pricing of Octane is a bit on the higher side. But if you look at what you have to add to Jira, on the plug-in side, to have the same abilities you have with Octane, you're more or less even, or even ahead with Octane."
  • "There is a conversion fee for changing licenses."
  • "The cost of this product is very high."
  • "The senior management of my company handles the purchases of the solution. However, the price per developer was a major reason we switched from Jira. Apart from the complexity and the support, the price was a major reason that a team of 20 people unanimously decided that we would prefer to go with Micro Focus ALM Octane rather than Jira. The senior management had seen some benefit in it and they preferred it over Jira because the per developer cost was less and the support was superior."
  • "ALM Octane is very expensive."
