Securing cloud-native AI workloads has improved observability and reduced latency for partners
I think they need to continue developing their load balancing and possibly even a more efficient DNS system. User interfaces are dependent on each customer, whether they're going to use something like Grafana or, in our case at Cisco, we will be using Splunk. The observability parts within Timescape are fine, and I am sure they will improve over time. Governance and security depend on the approach each customer will take to deploying the systems. You can do the minimums or really dive into observability and governance over any of the ecosystems. This is an individual journey, and Isovalent makes it easier. Before Isovalent, we struggled with just simple pod observability with products like Kalisti that sat on the side of the sidecar. Adding all these products added latency, so we tuned the environment as quickly as possible to be as efficient as possible, especially if you're using cloud resources.

We gain valuable time by not having to use a laptop to do testing, especially with complex connection profiles
The small screen is a little bit of a handicap. It would be nice if we could, for instance, connect a larger screen to the device, but it's very user-friendly. You're only limited by the size of the screen. That's the only negative aspect of doing surveys with this device. Also, in the first releases, I wasn't very happy about the WiFi function, but I have to say that they listened very well because, in the latest release, all my concerns were resolved. It is an Android device, so it is a little bit of dropdown, left-swipe, right-swipe, and that's not always very clear. Sometimes it's not very clear which screen you're looking at. Am I looking at a device configuration? Am I looking at the test configuration? But I think that comes from the Android operating system more than the EtherScope application itself. In general, I'm pretty happy with the device. It's a light device, a portable device. It doesn't heat up. Some small devices sometimes heat up and it's not really fun to work with them. I don't see a lot of negative points. It evolved, of course. It has been on the market now for several years and I think it is a very mature product.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Isovalent has positively impacted my organization by helping improve the security and visibility."
"In reducing overall latency to the numbers I mentioned before, this has increased usability without spending more money, so a return on investment is instantaneous."
"Isovalent has positively impacted my organization because my clients really appreciate this solution."
"Isovalent has impacted my organization positively as we are currently moving to Kubernetes and trying to add Cilium to manage networking."
"Isovalent has positively impacted my organization by increasing efficiency, helping my support teams be more efficient by decreasing time consumption related to troubleshooting for network-related issues."
"Isovalent has positively impacted my organization by ensuring that after moving to Isovalent products, we trust the tools we chose for the community, particularly the powerful tools such as Cilium."
"Using Isovalent's Cilium, I have seen that it will be really helpful for the design and implementation teams who are actually building this cluster and providing it to the end users."
"Learning about Isovalent changed the way I approach cloud security in my day-to-day work."
"This product has definitely reduced our troubleshooting time."
"In terms of the cost of the device versus its ability to save you time or solve problems faster, it's a good value."
"The AirMapper Site Survey app is one of the biggest highlights of this product. When somebody asks me, "Why should I use this device?" it's the first thing I show them, and they usually love it. Its ability to gather WiFi site survey data is absolutely amazing."
"This is a priceless tool and you would be foolish not to have it."
"I love the AutoTest feature... AutoTest allows us to find out what port it is on the switch and to trace it back to a particular patch panel. We can then document it, if necessary, or use that information for connecting a device or for re-VLANing a switch to the appropriate VLAN."
"When it comes to that remote troubleshooting perspective of being able to survey an area to see if there are problems, make adjustments, and then have that same individual resurvey that same area, I don't have to send people to a week long class on how to use the device. I know I am getting consistent results, which can verify near real-time, and whether or not the changes that I have implemented solve the problem."
"One of the standout features is its ability to serve as an advanced handheld packet analyzer. It excels in discovering both wired and wireless networks and automatically documenting them, which is really valuable. The tool provides insights from the physical layer up to layer seven, including HTTP, which helps diagnose network issues effectively. This automated documentation feature sets NetAlly apart from competitors, enhancing efficiency and accuracy in network management and recommendations. When the EtherScope nXG identifies a problem, it alerts us, allowing us to use more advanced tools for deeper analysis. Regarding PoE testing capabilities, I haven't explored them extensively, but I'm aware of their importance, especially for detecting issues like overloading switches with too many PoE devices. Integrators are becoming more cautious about these issues, but specialized tools like those from other vendors may offer features like microburst dashboards, which EtherScope nXG currently doesn't provide."
"I can honestly say that we can't work without the EtherScope."

Cons

"Sometimes I feel the costing is a bit high, on the higher side."
"I have not seen a return on investment from my experience with Isovalent, so I do not have any comments on that."
"Additionally, the interface is very important to me because the user does not have the ability to see how Isovalent is working."
"The only feedback I have about Isovalent is probably to lean on more documentation from the resource perspective, which is amazing."
"I think Isovalent can be improved by adding more labs."
"I think they need to continue developing their load balancing and possibly even a more efficient DNS system."
"I experienced some Hubble problems which were related to the huge internal traffic, which was somehow causing Hubble to hang and required a restart of Hubble."
"On a hardware spec, it'd be nice to have something above 10-Gigs."
"The user interface could be a little bit more streamlined, a little bit easier. Sometimes it's hard to find a specific thing that you're looking for. In terms of hardware-based improvement, the battery would be the biggest issue. The battery goes out very quickly."
"NetAlly EtherScope nXG's reporting and table qualification could be improved."
"For the average network shop, the cost is a bit high."
"The main area for improvement that stands out is the lack of a microburst dashboard, which some other vendors offer. However, NetAlly has carved out its niche by focusing on comprehensive network analysis up to layer seven, including automatic network mapping with tools like CyberScope. While there may be some features missing compared to competitors, NetAlly remains strong in its specialized market, providing robust solutions like EtherScope for detailed customer scans, despite being on the pricier side."
"The battery life could be better. There have been a couple of times that I used it and put it down, then I went to pick it up and the battery was dead. So, I need to take the power cord with me in order to continue using it."
"The reporting could be better, with more accurate measurements of loss over cables, impedance, etc. The mapping also needs to be improved. You should be able to do free formatting of the topology."
"The only issue that I have ever had is the battery life. It does drain a little bit quickly."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The pricing can be a little bit high for a handheld tool, mostly because, potentially, people do not understand what's in the package. However, NetAlly offers great bundled deals. We got a significantly good deal by ordering a package of these devices that had a whole test kit together. So, while it's very high, the value is certainly there, and the vendor does offer value-added features to offset that cost."
"We paid for the additional maintenance on it (for an extra year) to get that extra coverage. This was the first time that we had this solution in-house, and it was pretty pricey. So, we wanted to make sure that anything went wrong, then we could get it repaired."
"It's a pricey device, but I see value in it from a business perspective."
"It's very expensive. I wish I could buy a few more and give them to all the people who could use it, or perhaps send it to a client, given that some of its features are easy to use. But sending something worth $8,000 or $9,000 is nerve-racking. It would be nice that if it were a lot less expensive."
"If you're in the networking world, this product makes great sense very quickly, if you're going to use it more than a few times a week... If you are just looking at a handheld device unit for specific, wireless or wired testing and not much else, the cost may be a little more prohibitive than what you have in your budget."
"It is worth it. The cost benefit of Link-Live is massive because it is included with the cost of the device and the licensing. A lot of people miss that part of it. It is not just the device that you get but it is the ability to look at all of that data later on. You're not having to do all of that on the device. You can just be there, use the device, and then look at the data from the comfort of your office or home afterward."
"If we were to purchase separate meters to do similar things, it would be double or triple the cost for us to have each toolkit available. Being a small business, putting that much money on a single truck is not cost-effective. Instead, we could put the analyzer, network heat map, and cable tester all in one meter. That is why we went for it."
"I don't consider the pricing to be a problem. It's not a cheap device, but it's a very capable device for the money. It's a good value."
