Time series data has been managed efficiently for IoT sensors but reporting still needs improvement
How InfluxDB can be improved is relevant since for Energy Box, we face certain issues. We have customers worldwide, including the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe, but when we expanded to China two years ago, they indicated that they do not support the cloud version there. Our application is built on the cloud, which required us to create a separate application for Azure China, which was painful for us. The second issue involves frequent version changes. For example, we started with version one, transitioned to version two, and I heard they are considering InfluxDB version three, reverting to earlier practices. InfluxDB should improve without completely changing its approach. Now we have to redo our work for InfluxDB version three. Regarding needed improvements, the documentation is sufficient, but pricing presents a challenge. InfluxDB has standard pricing, which is acceptable for large companies. However, for startups in our position, they should provide special discounts so everyone can utilize it. The pricing should adapt as companies grow, which is a reasonable expectation.

Easy to set up with good documentation and helpful support
I'm using it for a customer The packet flow switch is the most valuable aspect of the solution.  It's an easy product to set up. We can scale the solution if we need to. It's stable.  The documentation is well-written and quite useful. It's compatible with other products.  Under the pocket flow…

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"InfluxDB works as expected with excellent scalability and stability, which is critical for our application."
"InfluxDB works as expected with excellent scalability and stability, which is critical for our application."
"The user interface is well-designed and easy to use. It provides a clear overview of the data, making it simple to understand the information at hand."
"Because of reduced downtime, we benefit greatly from receiving alerts in advance."
"InfluxDB has played a key role in enhancing system reliability and supporting our goal of delivering a seamless, high-quality product."
"InfluxDB is a database where you can insert data. However, it would be best if you had different components for alerting, data sending, and visualization. You need to install tools to collect data from servers. It must be installed on Windows or Linux servers. During installation, ensure that the configuration file is correct to prevent issues. Once data is collected, it can be sent to InfluxDB. For visualization, you can use open-source tools like Grafana."
"The solution is very powerful."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is we can use InfluxDB to integrate with and plug into any other tools."
"It is very rock solid. We hardly have any hardware issues."
"This solution has cut our overall troubleshooting time, sometimes going down to a few hours over what might have taken one to two days to fully troubleshoot an issue, and it has helped to increase our application uptime as we try to keep the five nines."
"I love the single pane of glass view. It makes it easier to not have to navigate everywhere. It allows more simplistic visibility, without having to go from tool to tool to tool, or from window to window to window."
"The packet flow switch is the most valuable aspect of the solution."
"When we have mobile operators who are signal partners, where one is the roaming host and another is the roamer, we are able to see their traffic. Their packets are able to detect if any faults to develop, and at what point they fail."
"The solution has helped to increase application and network uptime, reduced our mean time to repair significantly for application and network issues, and cut our overall troubleshooting time from an hour down to five minutes."
"The product is stable. I have never had any issue where we have lost an InfiniStream, or visibility from that particular InfiniStream, throughout the bank."
"It's an easy product to set up."

Cons

"I haven't seen a return on investment; unfortunately, I cannot share relevant metrics such as time saved, fewer employees needed, or money saved."
"The error logging capability can be improved because the logs are not very informative."
"In terms of features that I would like to see or have, in the community version, some features are not available. I would like to have clustering and authentication in the community version."
"However, I do wish the documentation and community resources around Flux were more extensive and beginner-friendly."
"Sometimes, when we write too much data within a minute, the data count becomes excessive, reaching perhaps 100,000 or 500,000 data points, and InfluxDB gives a timeout exception, which we must handle in our application."
"The solution's UI can be more user-friendly."
"InfluxDB is generally stable, but we've encountered issues with the configuration file in our ticket stack. For instance, a mistake in one of the metrics out of a hundred KPIs can disrupt data collection for all KPIs. This happens because the agent stops working if there's an issue with any configuration part. To address this, it is essential to ensure that all configurations are part of the agent's EXE file when provided. This makes it easier to package the agent for server installation and ensures all KPIs are available from the server. Additionally, the agent cannot encrypt and decrypt passwords for authentication, which can be problematic when monitoring URLs or requiring authentication tokens. This requires additional scripting and can prolong service restart times."
"InfluxDB can be improved in several ways. The Flux query language needs to be learned, but if there were something similar to SQL or previous options, it would be much easier for users without imposing a learning curve."
"Being able to manage the packet flow switches in nGeniusONE would be great."
"The NetFlow Collectors could handle more flows per minute."
"I'd like them to make the product more user-friendly."
"The scalability has some limitations and quirks to it. I would like to be able to upgrade rather than replace the whole thing."
"I would like to see an improved level of stitching between IPs."
"The monitoring and reporting tool needs improvement."
"The technology goes end-of-life on us every year, which is why I am looking forward to vSTREAM. I don't like when devices go end-of-life on us so quickly. If we can get more of an advanced notice of when an end-of-life is brought up, because our certification process within the organization takes a while."
"The single pane of glass feed still needs work."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We are using the open-source version of InfluxDB."
"InfluxDB recently increased its price. It is very expensive now."
"The tool is an open-source product."
"InfluxDB is open-source, but there are additional costs for scaling."
"It can be scalable. It just costs too much. With a company as big as ours, it gets too expensive to accommodate every single site."
"The scalability is good, but it comes at a cost. E.g., if you need 100 InfiniStream because you are sending gigs or terabytes of data to one InfiniStream, then you will have to purchase another InfiniStream, which are not cheap."
"This product could be cheaper."
"The price is a little high."
"To capture more with the solution that we bought, you have to buy another InfiniStreamNG, and there are only four ports in the back."
"I would like it to be more scalable with less spend."
