Offers effective monitoring of resources but lacks the ability to connect to an AWS instance and write custom queries.
We use it mainly for monitoring, including CPU, memory, and disk space, and for troubleshooting purposes We've set up alerts to notify us when performance deviates from the baseline we've configured for each resource. So, whenever that happens, we get an alert and can investigate immediately. So,…

I think Toad for Oracle should create an academy for training youngsters on how to code and debug using the Oracle PL/SQL extension plugin and make it more intuitive, probably using gamification, because people learn differently. Some are kinesthetic learners, some are audio learners, some are visual learners, and some are audio-visual learners. Having a gamification aspect on Toad for Oracle where it explains how to code, debug, and gives young starters or new starters confidence and understanding of what to do and how to do it would help ensure that those wanting to get into coding have that flair, making them able to engage with using it effectively.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Memory and CPU utilization features are good."
"The best part of SQL DM is the ability to customize alerts and counters. This allows our team to find an issue then alert on the issue at a granular level."
"The ability to go back and look at historical data is the most valuable feature."
"Monitors and alerts on our mission critical instances in real-time on a 24/7 basis."
"One of the things that it is used for is to detect anything that could possibly cause our systems not to function well, and it has helped us to determine that before anything has actually happened."
"Baselining our SQL Servers has made a huge impact."
"We're able to diagnose issues prior to their actually becoming issues. Without the alerting, we wouldn't have a clue as to what was going to happen. With the alerting, it gives us a heads-up that a specific threshold has been met, and we need to take specific action."
"Ability to identify bottlenecks, deadlocks and slow running queries and run monthly and daily reports."
"A quite simple feature that I have not encountered elsewhere is the "Make Code" feature. I can easily export a complex SQL statement to a programming language. This is a great timesaver as I do not have to type in all of the escape/concatenation characters just to create a SQL statement in C# or C++."
"Oracle has advanced query optimization and tuning features that help improve the performance of SQL queries."
"The most valuable feature is the navigation within the UI, where you can right-click on an object in an SQL query and go right to it, versus going through all of the menus to find what you are looking for."
"The best product for working with Oracle databases for support, checking and loading data."
"Toad has a lot of features that are very useful, fast, and well developed."
"I haven't seen any issues with scalability. We have about 1000 people on our IT team who use the solution."
"I find Toad easy to use and I love the Workspace feature, which allows me to set up projects so that I can open SQL files applicable to what I am working on at any particular time."
"It is very easy to manage all of the objects."

Cons

"Some more granularity in alerting."
"It would helpful if SQL DM could mark when changes are made within the program."
"Scalability is what I mentioned earlier, regarding room for improvement. It doesn't seem to scale out to an environment as large as ours, with just a single monitoring server."
"The initial setup gives too many user rights to the server, so you have to put a user that is part administrator's group - that's the preferred way - on each server, which is kind of a risk. You want to do least privilege and you're not doing that."
"Tech support has been okay, not that great, but they made sure that we got what we were looking for."
"We don't find that it helps us with performance monitoring and diagnostics. We find that SentryOne does that better. Also, in terms of alerts, we had to customize them dramatically so that we didn't get alerted on every little thing."
"Reporting and overall analysis of data gathered from SQL Server."
"I'm going to do an upgrade which may resolve my issues, but one area for improvement is its ability to handle the amount of data that we collect with it. We're likely one of the largest installations, with over 300 servers being collected with this product, and sometimes there are gaps. That would really be my only concern, in terms of how the data is collected and stored, for consistency."
"When all the features are shown, the performance is not good; it loads slowly and has hundreds of popups and unnecessary questions."
"The learning curve is steep for beginners, and the infrastructure is a bit complex."
"The price of this solution should be reduced."
"Once in a while, I may encounter a memory exception and have to abort the application. On a few occasions, the file that stores the saved connections for the New Connection window will become corrupt and I will lose all of my saved connections. I am not sure if that is a Windows or TOAD issue, but it has happened to all of my developers at some point or another."
"No financial benefit has been observed after implementing Toad for Oracle because SQL editors are free, and many free tools are available, while Toad for Oracle is a paid solution."
"Improvement wise, for the user it should show the minimum features on the screen and not all the features. Toad has a lot of features, but most users will use only 5 or 10 based on their role. Nobody needs all the features, and they should provide the option to choose only the required features. Only minimum requirements should be enabled by default. When all the features are shown, the performance is not good; it loads slowly and has hundreds of popups and unnecessary questions."
"Toad for Oracle does not have a particular resolution within the application."
"It would be better if they had an online option allowing me to connect from anywhere on any device. Sometimes I face some errors, depending on the network and setup. It's not a big issue."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We were upgraded to Premium Support without their actually asking us, when we were quoted. Then I asked for Standard Support and that they had to re-quote us that. But they don't do that by default. They upcharge you by default, which I didn't think was very nice, without even asking."
"The pricing is reasonable, it's comparable with the competitors."
"My advice is to try to use the three-year maintenance agreement if possible."
"The pricing is okay, it's reasonable."
"I would rate it six, where one is a low price, and ten is a high price."
"In my opinion, this solution is a little expensive, but I understand that good programs cost more money."
"The product's pricing is just right because if it were slightly higher, it would not have been as widely adopted as it currently is in our organization."
"The professional edition is about $1,000 AUD ($700 USD) and the developer version is about twice that much."
"There are paid and free-for-use versions of the product."
"Toad for Oracle has a relatively high cost compared to other similar tools."
