Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The 13cR2 updates to the OEM family, strongly integrate Cloud (off-site, hybrid and on-premise) services providing a seamless way to see all of your resources regardless of where they are deployed.""It's easy to implement as it's made by Oracle for Oracle.""It is the best monitoring tool for Oracle databases.""SQL Tuning Advisor, ADDM, Top Activity, ASM Space Manager, Incident Notifications""This solution allows us to quickly drill down when there are issues.""Due to the infrastructure's size, the introduction they offer is very, very useful. It helps with an overall understanding of the product.""I like that it's stable.""We use it extensively for performance tuning testing, monitoring, and configuration."

"The most valuable feature of Toad for Oracle is the fashion browser and the Schema browser. It is very complete.""A quite simple feature that I have not encountered elsewhere is the "Make Code" feature. I can easily export a complex SQL statement to a programming language. This is a great timesaver as I do not have to type in all of the escape/concatenation characters just to create a SQL statement in C# or C++.""I haven't seen any issues with scalability. We have about 1000 people on our IT team who use the solution."

Cons
"The product is pretty comprehensive, but quite resource hungry. This might be due to the majority of the application seemingly being written in Java.""The solution has a very large resource system. It's too big. There are too many items.""Technical support could be faster.""In my opinion, rather than a younger DBA, think the user interface could be improved.""I would like to see better pricing.""Patching. It's extremely difficult to determine what requires patching and the process to patch each component is slightly different.""Better mobile access would be useful.""Reporting and statistical charting is largely still left up the end-user to develop custom solutions."

"Improvement wise, for the user it should show the minimum features on the screen and not all the features. Toad has a lot of features, but most users will use only 5 or 10 based on their role. Nobody needs all the features, and they should provide the option to choose only the required features. Only minimum requirements should be enabled by default. When all the features are shown, the performance is not good; it loads slowly and has hundreds of popups and unnecessary questions.""Once in a while, I may encounter a memory exception and have to abort the application. On a few occasions, the file that stores the saved connections for the New Connection window will become corrupt and I will lose all of my saved connections. I am not sure if that is a Windows or TOAD issue, but it has happened to all of my developers at some point or another.""Toad for Oracle could improve code completion, it is very slow."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Evaluate your requirements carefully. Elaborate DR and HA setup of OEM can become expensive."
  • "Be careful to only enable the packs for which you have a license as this is an issue we see time and again."
  • "The solution is inexpensive to purchase."
  • "It's expensive."
  • "The licensing is the responsibility of our customers."
  • "There are a few bugs with the software which require opening SRs with Oracle Support which contribute to the day-to-day cost. Perhaps 8 hours per month is spent dealing with support, just as a rough guess."
  • "Based upon 3 days of implementation by a single person, plus licensing costs would be approximately $60,000, including the virtualized hosts."

    Reviews from Real Users

Oracle Enterprise Manager stands out among its competitors for a number of reasons. Several major ones are its central management and monitoring and its reporting capabilities

Robin C., head of Oracle Exadata Centre of Excellence at Tata Consultancy Services, writes, "The database performance monitoring features are very useful and allow us to quickly zero in on DB-related issues. Exadata storage server and Infiniband switches can be viewed from the GUI in OEM which cannot be done in other tools. The ability to deploy metric extensions makes this tool extensible for our custom monitoring also."

PeerSpot users note the effectiveness of these features. A database manager at a tech services company notes, “The solution's most valuable aspect is the fact that it is embedded with the Oracle database and Oracle's engineering system, its extra data, and analytics.  They have plug-ins that are very helpful. Due to the infrastructure's size, the introduction they offer is very, very useful. It helps with an overall understanding of the product. They have a very nice graphical user interface. The monitoring is good. We can capture the SQL tune from us. With Oracle Enterprise Managers, we can see the rich performance tuning.”

With Toad for Oracle, you'll reduce costs and risks by easily ensuring the health and performance of your Oracle Cloud Platform and on-premises databases. ... On the operations side, you can automate administration tasks and proactively manage your databases while embracing performance optimization and risk mitigation.
