Improved data modeling has reduced system footprint and strengthened finance workflows
I assess the benefits of IDERA ER_Studio's metadata management for my organization as not as good as Erwin's. Erwin's metadata management is better in how it handles data. There is a lot more user involvement in managing the metadata, primarily because in IDERA ER_Studio, the logical and physical models are separately defined in the same file, so you have to map them every single time. In Erwin, it has a unified structure, so if you make a change in the logical model, it automatically shows up in the physical model. You have to go through a couple of steps in the IDERA model to make sure everything has moved over. While that is not that inconvenient when you are actually doing development, as far as metadata management, that is prone to things getting dropped and missed. The collaboration tools in IDERA ER_Studio are adequate, but I think with Erwin, there is more of an opportunity for things to crash. Changes can be merged in IDERA more fluidly; however, the locking and sharing are a little bit more defined in Erwin. I think the learning curve for Erwin might be easier than IDERA ER_Studio, especially with connecting to different models and systems.

By capturing performance issues when they happen, we do not miss crucial data
* Indexing and locking analyses * The ability to generate optimize scripts. * The prioritized recommendations are nice to have. Furthermore, you can have multiple scans archived when comparing the tracing from a baseline perspective. Two scans can give us insights concerning the difference between a good and a bad situation.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We found a lot of duplication, a lot of non-conformity in the way our databases were designed. By identifying these situations, we're able to go back in and try to create a more standardized solution."
"I think it's the best due to pricing and good overall support."
"Our primary use case of this solution is to design our database."
"It's easy to model and has a user-friendly interface. I like the team portal because, once we upload, the entire team can see the model."
"You will save time, switching from whatever product you're using."
"Developing new dimensional models; for the data we're hosting, dimensional modeling is more useful."
"We can track changes to our data models and tie those changes back to specific tasks or efforts that we identify."
"Straightforward setup."
"You can have multiple scans archived when comparing the tracing from a baseline perspective. Two scans can give us insights concerning the difference between a good and a bad situation."
"It is the perfect first action that we can take with the help from our service desk!"

Cons

"The repository causes continuous problems, as it's slow and sometimes crashes."
"The only thing I had an issue with was licensing, and the support was very good."
"It would be helpful if they could create a generic JSON database type, as a target database, rather than a specific one like Mongo."
"Diagram versioning is not very intuitive Data Dictionary Bindings is not very intuitive"
"Installation of the product itself is straight forward although the licensing process is awkward and confusing at best."
"The model diagram because very clumsy when you save it on the team server and the models are very big."
"We did have a big issue when we upgraded to the 2016 version. The Team Server portion never did quite install correctly, and/or the database was corrupted, and we never figured it out."
"I'd like the ability to debug the errors ourselves instead of having to call them. There are certain types of errors that, I wouldn't say they come up regularly, but when you have an error it is very often the same type of error. Knowing that it's a Type III or Type I, it would be nice to have some kind of debugging facility for us to use to find out where the problem that threw that error occurs. That would be a really cool feature."
"SQL Doctor should be improved in Availability Groups, mirroring, and clustering analyses. We mostly see index and query plan analyses. It should be broader than this."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The process of licensing could be much simpler, from our experience."
"It is priced fairly. It's around the same as erwin and other competitors' costs."
"I feel the product's pricing is a good value."
"I am currently using the trial version, but this solution is definitely worth considering for the price point."
"The price of this product is okay."
"On a scale of one to ten, where one is bad and ten is good, I would rate the licensing cost as a seven or eight. It's not too expensive for us."
"I use the product's trial version."
"The product is pricey."
