We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The out of the box reports and workflows are pretty good and they meet our requirements well.""SevOne has rich API capabilities, giving us the flexibility to control what we collect and customize the collection, creation, and manipulation of now metrics as necessary.""Data Insight reporting tool is the most valuable feature. They came up with it a couple of years ago. The most pleasing factor is the dark theme. You don't have a white background. It has templates that you can create for all kinds of reports that you can hit on the fly. It's much better printing of the reports. If you want to send PDFs to people, the reports are actually decent. Whereas for years, the old architecture of the PDFs was rubbish and even our customers said, "We have to manipulate your PDFs because they all have bad margin breaks. SevOne fixed that a couple of years ago with the new Data Insight. It's fantastic.""We find that the reporting is particularly valuable in terms of not only communicating with our peer teams but also with the executives.""In 90% of the cases, new devices are plug-and-play, so when a new version comes out then SevOne has support for it out of the box.""One of the solution's biggest strengths is its capacity management performance, with out-of-the-box reports through NMS, as well as its ability to collect NetFlow-related data from devices. The collection of network performance and flow data is important because we have many critical business applications.""SevOne’s data collection functionality is very good. From a collection point of view, we pull SNMP data, which is simple. It is easy to manipulate the pull in the estate. It is really simple compared to some of the other products that we have used. However, for deferred data, i.e., things that we import or don't pull directly, we tend to have a preplanned integration. So, its Universal Collector is really useful.""The modules and the performance management reports that come with data insights are two of the most valuable features. I also find the reports for Wi-Fi, Netflow, LAN, and WAN for monitoring to be very good."

"The most valuable feature of PRTG Network Monitor is the dashboards. We can check to see the resources and the uptime.""Network Discovery is a feature that our customers like a lot.""The most valuable feature of PRTG Network Monitor is real-time monitoring.""It allows us to directly add individual VMs independently.""Stable and scalable network monitoring tool. Installation is simple and straightforward.""The solution is easy to manage and the reports are very accurate.""It is able to satisfy all our requirements in terms of email notifications and specific errors on the devices.""I found PRTG Network Monitor very useful for troubleshooting and monitoring the utilization of either the network or server."

Cons
"There are a lot of pain points. My main problem is that we don't have a high availability system. There are 20 peers. We're going to lose the end-of-life appliances that are old. If we lose a peer and it doesn't come back, we lose all that data. The reason we don't have high availability is because it's double the charge.""We previously have had discussions on some reporting enhancements. So, we raised a feature request, which was delivered from SevOne.""The reports are easy to configure but they are a bit outdated in terms of appearance and visualization.""Telemetry is hot these days, and IBM can improve SevOne's support for telemetry correction. Reporting is another feature that could be better. It provides the bare minimum functionality, which is good enough for most engineers, but the management isn't advanced. The new portal provides a much lighter view and better visualization, but the management is not so good.""High-frequency polling is data-intensive because you're pulling more. If SevOne could figure out a way to manage the impact of high-frequency polling on the system, that would be very popular.""We need to be thinking about streaming telemetry protocols. They already have the port for enhanced visualization, which they already have through Data Insight.""The user management features need to be improved. It would be nice if we had more granular control, or layers of control, out of the box.""The one area with room for improvement is probably administration. They added data insights to make a better user experience, but I'd like to see some improvements in the way the system's administered."

"This solution is a good product so far, but I haven't been using it long enough to know how it could be improved.""The operations dashboard is only available in PRTG's enterprise version, but I wish it could be accessed in the standard licensing. It would also be nice if PRTG had templates for dashboard monitoring, software monitoring, etc. It can help me set up a dashboard because now we don't have a template from PRTG, so we need to create one from scratch.""There's always room for improvement. The high availability feature is good, but it's an area that PRTG could marginally improve. For example, in PRTG, both servers have a different IP, but it would make things a lot easier if they were bound by a single IP.""A room for improvement in PRTG Network Monitor is its sensors. Its application technology sensor, such as the IAS, .NET, etc., needs some improvement because it doesn't work as expected. For example, the IAS sensor doesn't give immediate information, and the information you get from it isn't of good value. The web GUI of PRTG Network Monitor also needs improvement because errors keep popping up if it's not been updated to the latest version. What I'd like to see in the next release of the tool is end-to-end topology mapping for the business model, and that should be required. There has to be a technical map. Technical mapping and topological creation are missing in PRTG Network Monitor, so I would like to see those in the future.""The technical support could respond a little bit quicker.""PRTG Network Monitor can improve Layer 2 and Layer 3 network maps and the GUI more user-friendly. Additionally, they should bundle the features so I can monitor everything on one particular device.""PRTG Network Monitor can improve by adding prevention and detection features.""I know we're going to move to Docker applications and I understand that PRTG does some monitoring regarding this. I do not know if it is complete. If it's not yet complete, it's something they should consider improving."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The pricing has been fair."
  • "Many tools price things based on the number of KPIs that you're collecting around a device. In many cases, there could be hundreds of metrics that you need to collect. SevOne provides device-level pricing. That gives us the flexibility to turn on, and expand on, the metrics that we're collecting around those devices, without taking a financial hit."
  • "The pricing has not evolved with the market, which is one of the reasons we are moving to a new product."
  • "Although I don't have exact details in terms of cost, my experience has been that SevOne is willing to make a deal with the customer."
  • "There are different options available for licensing, with the per-device option being more expensive but more flexible."
  • "A blocking point is the high upfront cost because it is challenging to get it accepted and the purchase approved."
  • "For the value that you get from SevOne, it's worth the price. There are a lot of cheaper alternatives on the market, and even free options. But they require more staff, more resources, and engineers with more advanced knowledge of monitoring. That's what makes SevOne worth the price."

  • "It is expensive."
  • "It's an annual license that is based on the number of endpoints that we're tracking and using."
  • "All monitoring system is close to the same pricing scheme."
  • "The price is pretty comparable."
  • "The pricing is okay and it is cheaper than some competing products."
  • "We are using the basic PRTG that we can download for free. For now, we only need to monitor less than 100 devices. For more than 100 devices, we would need to buy a license. PRTG is much cheaper than SolarWinds."
  • "We have an unlimited license for this solution."
  • "I'm paying something like €1000 per year for the maintenance. I've got unlimited sensors."
