Has offered a cost-effective option despite frequent technical issues and limited market demand
We find some bugs in IBM Informix. Maybe we are using it more aggressively than others. Every month or every second month, we find some bugs in it, which is not ideal. It should be rare, not this frequent. The good thing is they cover those bugs in the next release within weeks or days on demand. IBM Informix should become hybrid and should include AI features similar to other DBMS systems such as Snowflake, Redshift, and DataBricks. This would help its value rise with the market.

Has successfully supported tenant data separation and enabled strong analytics capabilities
We use VPD, Virtual Private Database, for the multitenancy. We are selling products and using Oracle Multitenant for tenants, for building the product for our customers. We have many customers, actually thousands, and the main objective is to separate data from one customer to another The…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Informix can support huge quantities of data with less memory and less capacity."
"Flexible Grid provides the ability to automatically create database objects, such as tables, indexes, and stored procedures on all nodes within the grid as a single operation."
"So far, we do not have a lot of issues. It's pretty problem-free."
"It is very easy to install IBM Informix, very easy to scale, and support is quite better."
"Replication, all levels of replication, query charting, and the MongoDB embedded are the most valuable features of this solution."
"Every version is faster than the previous."
"This solution has made financial reporting possible by allowing financial people the opportunity to set Informix to "Auto Pilot" so that they can attend other duties."
"The initial setup is very simple."
"As far as this product is concerned, we are happy with this product."
"The modernization aspect of Oracle Multitenant is significant; it wasn't available previously in database technology, but now it is, enhancing database consolidation."
"I would rate the scalability a ten out of ten. Our clients are mostly medium and enterprise businesses."
"The ability to create multiple databases without using any additional memory and CPU, and reallocating resources among these databases as needed, dynamically, without restarting."
"The analytics tool, Oracle Analytics Server (OAS), is the main important component of this solution and in the analytics part, the VPD handles all the necessary functions effectively."
"You can scale the solution as needed."
"It's easy to use and works great."
"With the right configurations, you can maintain an environment without retaining the risk of losing any kind of data."

Cons

"The product needs a lot more marketing involvement from IBM."
"In my opinion, the packages could be improved. The version I use doesn't allow for packages. I can do some general procedures, but no packages like in Oracle. So, develop separate modules in SQL language. This would be most beneficial for me."
"Continue extending the SQL language for compatibility with the competition's language, including Stored Procedure Language."
"Informix is very sturdy, but the problem for us is the marketing action around Informix."
"For me, it's always too expensive. The problem is that Informix sometimes competes with free products, so yes, it's very expensive, but when we're talking about licensed products like SQL Server or anything, the midsize pricing could be significantly improved."
"The solution really doesn't add new features very often. Other solutions are much more actively pushing out upgrades and improvements."
"I really would love to have a QT plugin."
"The pricing is a bit expensive."
"While the product is overall excellent, it is quite expensive."
"From the scope of improvement, I would say that people are adopting new query options. Certain databases like MongoDB adopt new query options so that they can just pull the data."
"Oracle has a lot of work to do with Multitenant because it's a new feature."
"It needs to have some more granular control over IO resource allocation."
"The solution lacks a GUI for commands."
"Oracle Support is relatively unprepared for this. It has improved, but it still has a lot of room for improvement."
"There is room for improvement in customer service and support."
"The only issue is that shared files for the main container affect all container databases if something happens to them."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"For me, it's always too expensive."
"The free edition can be enough to handle moderate-size implementations, but you may want a pay for edition to benefit from more functionality, such as replication."
"The product has reasonable pricing. We purchase its yearly license."
"I am not aware of the licensing costs or terms."
"This solution is a little bit pricey."
"The price is worth the quality."
"For me, I will go with it if I have the budget. Some features are nicer than before, but at the end of the day, you always have a limited budget. I prefer to upgrade and get a specific hardware when possible. At the end, you will have to make a compromise. You will not get everything you would have liked to have."
