Supports efficient storage management through volume snapshots and offers reliable non-disruptive upgrades
I have no specific improvements to suggest for Pure FlashArray X NVMe at this time. The performance statistics could be enhanced. I can see the performance statistics in the Pure Storage console, but it does not show the performance by 4K byte unit. It displays IOPS and bandwidth, but IOPS is about real use, and I want to know how many IOPS are currently running in 4K byte units. I cannot see that IOPS because most storage systems report their performance by 4K byte unit. I want to see Pure Storage performance by 4K byte unit to compare with other storage or other internal NVMe SSD.

Enhanced storage performance and an easy setup with compression challenges
We use IBM FlashSystem 9100 NVMe as a storage device in the IT industry The features I find most valuable include its use for storage and performance. The solution's compression needs to be improved, as it's not the best. Furthermore, support from the partner could also be improved as it's been…

Runs seamlessly, gives excellent visibility, and is like having an extra employee
Tintri VMstore gives excellent visibility at the virtual machine level. By using the performance statistics for a particular virtual machine, we can see straight away how a VM performed at a specific time. We can see whether there is any issue with low latency or high CPU usage. With the Tintri platform, it is very easy to pinpoint any underlying problems and issues. Tintri VMstore enables replication, snapshots, and setting QoS at the virtual machine level. This is very important these days. I have been in this business for a long time. I have been working with VMware for over 25 years in data operations. Over the last six to seven years, there has been a serious threat of ransomware attacks. Back in the day, you would have a backup and the ability to do a restore because someone deleted a file. Nowadays, you also need to have proper protection when the next ransomware attack comes. The ability to have immutable snapshots is very important so that you can be back on track instantly when the next attack occurs. In my case, it has been a very good tool to avoid an attack and mitigate when an attack has already occurred. There is the simplicity of instant rollback. It does not matter how big the machines are. It is very easy to roll back the machine and get it up and running again. It enables us to do recovery at the virtual machine level. With Tintri SyncVM, I can do a per-file VM restore. It does not matter if it is a database, file server, or Exchange server. I have a complete copy of the machine from the snapshots where I can do full recovery or recover individual files if needed. The GUI is excellent when it comes to monitoring performance and capacity on a per-VM basis. I can directly go to the virtual machine, and via the widget in the vCenter GUI, I can see the performance statistics and historical and current performance for the virtual machine. I love the fact that it is so easy to get those numbers. I can also log in to the Tintri Global Center and get the performance data for the last five minutes and up to 30 days for a specific VM. You can use the one you want as a system admin. You can use the vCenter GUI for instant information and recent activities, or you can go into Tintri Global Center for deeper information and historical details. I worked with the older series of VMstore for many years, which unfortunately are coming to the end of life in February or March. I have been helping a customer in Sweden to migrate to the new T7000 platform. I have one customer who has been using their system for nine years, which is a very long time in these circumstances. Normally, you change storage every three to five years, but this customer has been so happy with their 800 series. The performance of these old series that are coming to their end of lifespan in February or March has been top-notch. The customer has been happy with the performance and total cost of ownership. Having a storage platform for nine years is impressive, not many can do it. This customer had a highly used and very big SQL Server running for many years. It had several jobs running for days. It was a hybrid VMStore at the time, so it had its limits. I pointed out to the customer to look at this virtual machine or this SQL Server. After we migrated it to the 7000 series, within a couple of weeks, we could see that the performance had significantly increased. Their long-running jobs got completed much faster because the 7000 series is 100% NVMe drives, so it is much faster than the hybrid. We could see a significant increase in performance. Tintri VMstore could be considered as an extra employee. It takes the load off your employees so that they can focus on other things on a daily basis. The total cost of ownership over time is beneficial when you are using a Tintri solution. Not many understand this. It is very important to point that out to a new user or a new customer. They have to take into consideration all the factors of daily operations. Having Tintri VMstore is like having an extra employee without having to pay them a salary.

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It offers competitive performance, and the Evergreen storage model of Pure fits well with my organization."
"What I really like about this program, is that it is easy to use and easy to configurate."
"Pure FlashArray X NVMe will quickly overcome all the hurdles you face, including network and latency issues."
"The solution is scalable."
"We are satisfied with the performance as it is significantly faster compared to traditional storage options."
"The tool's valuable features are speed, security, data compression, and reliability. Its data compression feature is the best that we have ever seen. It helps us to save money and resources."
"The standout features for us in Pure FlashArray X NVMe are its robust DDoS protection, seamless transparent failover, and failback capabilities ensuring high availability."
"One of the best features is the support, which is excellent."
"The most valuable feature of the solution is its upgrades, as we don't have to do much homework because of its different controllers."
"IBM FlashSystem 9100 NVMe is easy to use and comes with good performance."
"The features I find most valuable include its use for storage and performance."
"A key feature is that compared to storage systems that we've been familiar with over decades, IBM simply does not fail. The reason is that IBM is the only manufacturer that engineers its own flash module, and there is a key architectural difference from everything else that we have seen in the market. The difference is that the flash module has the computational capability, which allows reliability and capacity enhancements to be uploaded from the main controllers and run in each module. So, each of the flash drives becomes its own little storage system, and that is extremely effective architecture. In this field, with this type of system, IBM has made a statement. They've never had one of these modules cause an outage. So, the failure rates on these things are just in a whole different universe from what we were accustomed to."
"The most valuable feature is the speed."
"IBM FlashSystem 9100 NVMe is one of the leading storage systems in the world...I rate the solution's stability a ten out of ten."
"The storage serves the virtual environment. Most of our applications run in the virtual environment, and it serves nearly 30% of the bank's capacity."
"There are many valuable features of IBM FlashSystem 9100 NVMele I have found to meet my needs. Specifically, the maintenance cycle is a standout feature of this solution. The main component of the IBM FlashSystem 9100 NVMe is the maintenance of the batteries, which have a predetermined and reliable four-year life cycle. This is in stark contrast to other solutions that may use spinning disks, which can fail unexpectedly, causing unwanted downtime and maintenance. Having a predictable maintenance cycle is a significant advantage and has made this solution a preferred choice for me."
"The ability to snap machines into VMware quickly is valuable."
"Tintri VMstore is rock solid. We have not had a single issue with stability. It is also very low maintenance allowing us to concentrate on project work."
"The Deduplication feature in VDI environments. If Tintri says we can host 3000 VMs in our storage, I know we can host 3000 VMs there. Believe the results."
"The management dashboards keep improving and allow for quick and easy tracing of issues."
"The ease and use and the great performance are why we went with our 2nd Tintri VMstore."
"Its VM-aware features have been excellent to use and integrate with XenServer as well."
"The cloning is very fast... Another aspect I like is that it's very simple. It's an easy GUI to use."
"The most valuable aspect of the solution was how fast it worked on behalf of VDI desktops."

Cons

"Adding some functions to the product would be beneficial. Storage replication should be essential, and the analytics should not incur extra charges."
"In the future, I would like to see integration with enterprise backup systems."
"It feels more suitable for small and medium-sized businesses rather than enterprises."
"It's more multi-tenant functionality in their Pure1 manage portal that is lacking."
"You cannot tag a LUN with a description, and that should be improved. What I like on the Unity side is that when I expand LUNs or do things, there is an information field on the LUN. This is the Information field that you can tag on your LUNs to let yourself know, "Hey, I've added this much space on this date". Pure lacks that ability. So, you don't have a mechanism that's friendly for tracking your data expansions on the LUN and for adding any additional information. That's a downside for me."
"There are some challenges with data encryption and reduction."
"One point I'd like to improve is that the tool should start selling small boxes again. It discontinued some products and is focusing on bigger, more capable boxes, neglecting the SMB market. Even though it's not a big market, it shouldn't have removed them."
"The tool's portfolio is minimal. It is expensive."
"The ZIO interface could be improved."
"There is a tool provided by IBM for repairing batteries which can only be utilized by those who have an IBM technical advisor under service contract. However, for individuals who do not have such a contract, the tool can be difficult to use and requires a zip file copy. I believe that it would be greatly beneficial if the tool were made more user-friendly and accessible for all individuals who need to repair batteries."
"The solution's compression needs to be improved, as it's not the best."
"IBM FlashSystem 9100 NVMe is currently at the end of its lifespan and will soon become obsolete in the markets."
"The support could be better."
"The storage system itself should have built-in capabilities for different ransomware attacks."
"There could be a possibility of not requiring to buy a new box while upgrading to a newer version."
"The pricing should be more competitive."
"Detailed reporting is missing in the current version. We would like to see this feature added in a new release."
"The solution was challenging."
"More cloud integration."
"The biggest area for improvement, and there has been some roadmap work in this area already, is cloud integration... Tintri has been investing in this area and I'm sure will continue to, but cloud integration has been the biggest area that we've been crossing our fingers and hoping for quick development around."
"The solution is already good but the brand name is not so popular here."
"Tintri need to be able to innovate faster but maintain the quality of their features."
"When there are new releases of, for instance, VMware vSphere, it can sometimes take time on the Tintri side to support that. It can take longer than expected."
"Their current replication is really just enough to "check the box" that they do replication. We'll probably implement Actifio, Zerto or EMC RecoverPoint for VMs for more critical data replication."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We pay approximately $50,000 USD per year in licensing fees."
"The support cost per array is about $20,000 a year for 24/7 support."
"As far as the licensing costs, everything is included in the license."
"Pure FlashArray X NVMe’s pricing is cheaper than other products."
"The product is expensive."
"With Pure Storage, we would like to continue seeing price reductions with flash storage. I don't think we're any different than anybody else when we continue to look to the industry for price reductions of both NVMe and traditional SSD storage. We would like to see these prices continue to decline and erode, even displacing large spinning disks."
"The licensing is on a yearly basis."
"Our licensing fees are $500,000+ USD."
"Compared to other solutions, the cost of IBM FlashSystem 9100 NVMe is reasonable, with a one-time payment of around $70,000. However, additional support is available for $25,000 for three years. The overall maintenance cost is steep."
"The price of the FlashSystem 9100 NVMe is reasonable."
"The solution is priced well."
"The solution's price is competitive."
"The price of IBM FlashSystem 9100 NVMele can be considered affordable when taking into account the operating system that is required for it to function properly. This operating system, which is licensed by IBM, may carry a higher cost, but it is worth the investment for larger corporate entities, such as insurance companies, Fortune Five companies, and banks, who make up a significant portion of their target market. The FlashSystems are designed for larger corporations and multinational enterprises, and may not be the most cost-effective solution for smaller businesses."
"On a scale of one to ten, where one is a low price and ten is a high price, I rate the pricing an eight."
"Compared to its competitors, IBM's offering is the most cost-effective."
"The price of IBM FlashSystem 9100 NVMe is less than Dell. For upgrades, the Dell solutions are more expensive."
"The licensing model is relatively simple. For things like replication, however, the licensing needs to be looked at."
"We haven't found Tintri's pricing to be a barrier to entry for any of our customers. Tintri works through a number of distributors and when we've had to purchase it for our customers we have found the pricing to be competitive."
"Always could be cheaper."
"It's very competitive."
"Ensure the storage system "natively" supports the protocols that you wish to use (i.e., CIFS) without the need for the overhead of internal "conversion VMs" that run the protocols."
"Make sure that you have all licenses in one go. Options afterwards can cost extra."
"An "all-in-one" license model would be better at this price range."
"The price of Tintri VMstore is not overly high compared to similar solutions."
