Near-zero downtime has protected critical workloads and now simplifies hybrid cloud recovery
The best features of HPE Zerto Software are mainly very sophisticated and relevant to the current market. The data protection CDP part has real-time replication, unlike other solutions that have snapshot backups. We can set it up hourly, making it ideal for use with workloads. Another attraction is the near-zero RTO, with automated failover within minutes and one-click failover and failback. Currently, we are using a hybrid cloud solution, and HPE Zerto Software supports multi-cloud environments, making it easy to migrate between on-premises and cloud. Regarding the impact of HPE Zerto Software on our RTOs, we have near-zero RTO, meaning the system must be back online within thirty minutes if we measure the time. It is very quick to recover services. With HPE Zerto Software's near-synchronous replication, we have some CDP protection, so we typically write interceptions along with some asynchronous replication. There is almost real-time replication available.

The solution can be used for DR testing and allows running an infinite number of full backups
When we consider the backup model of other products like Veeam, their incremental backup just adds to their first full backup. With Veritas System Recovery, we have the option to run an infinite number of full backups according to our requirements. With my cloud version of Veritas System Recovery, I can have a full backup every month, which is not possible with any other vendors. Other vendors will claim that the original copy is strong enough, but the customers have to ensure that bugs won't cause any problems in the future. However, with Veritas System Recovery, you can run a full backup this month and again run a full backup on the first or thirtieth day of the next month.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Zerto simply is the tool for protecting any virtual workload."
"It's just a better solution all around."
"We selected Zerto because the RPO is extremely low, so you can get that server back up almost immediately. That was a huge thing. Also, the ability to do failover tests, where you can test your environment, but not have it impact your production environment, was huge."
"The most valuable feature is the disaster recovery capabilities. The fact that we can have a clinic across the country backup in as little as 45 minutes is incredible."
"The RTO and RPO are unparalleled; in the event you do have an issue, you can be back up and running (depending on the size of your infrastructure) within minutes, with your RTO at 15 minutes and data loss at five minutes, which I don't think is matched by anybody else in the field."
"The features of HPE Zerto Software that I appreciate most are that it's straightforward, and the console is clear, allowing me to assign it to my staff members who can generally tell the health of the Zerto implementation."
"One of the most valuable features of Zerto is its straightforward cost model."
"DR has enough problems to deal with and Zerto makes things a lot easier."
"With Veritas System Recovery, we have the option to run an infinite number of full backups according to our requirements."
"The installation was straightforward."
"The solution has helped reduce my company's cost by around 50 to 60 percent."
"The best thing about this product is that it's a unified solution and doesn't require the installation of any other solution, whether it's in a virtual environment, or on-prem."
"Offers good recovery quickly."
"It has a user-friendly interface and configures and integrates nicely with other products."
"You can back up the whole image, not just files and folders, but the image from the server, and you can restore the whole image."
"The solution captures the system state, so when we restore the system, it will be restored to the state it was in at the time of the backup."

Cons

"The only thing I really don't like about Zerto is that the ZVM has to be a Windows server. I can spin up any OBA template whenever I want to, but if it has an OS that's tied to it, then I have to involve the OS team from my company. That drives me crazy."
"I would like Zerto to provide more detailed information when there is an issue."
"The licensing is confusing and complicated."
"The technical support response needs improvement."
"Zerto's current reporting capabilities are insufficient for our needs."
"This solution could be improved if it met all the requirements that we look for including supporting multiple operating systems. We would prefer to use one solution for DR and backup."
"I would rate them an eight out of ten because not every response is as we expect. They do resolve the issue, but sometimes customers have unusual questions, and they are not able to say how exactly to fix that or how to do something,."
"Regarding HPE Zerto Software, the learning curve is where I see room for improvement."
"For most organizations these days, their main concern is to protect their database and I think Veritas could make some improvements in that regard."
"Lacks the ability to protect the database snapshot."
"The tool's deployment could be easier. The deployment itself isn't the issue; rather, the problem lies in configuring policies and testing everything before it's ready. We invest a significant amount of time in preparing for various scenarios. However, we often encounter situations where changes have occurred since our initial preparations. This can render the automation less valuable."
"It needs an easier interface."
"This solution needs an easier interface that is more comprehensible. Also, sometimes we have issues with restoring images when we initialize the servers."
"The pricing could be cheaper."
"The reliability is sometimes lacking."
"Veritas System Recovery’s pricing and local support need some improvement."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Zerto is pretty reasonable. I haven't checked to see how much Rubrik is going to quote us for their solution. At least for us, the price doesn't play a big factor in the decision-making because it is a pretty small deployment for our use case."
"The licensing costs are not cheap. It is kind of an expensive product. However, I am a get-what-you-pay-for kind of person. After using this product, I can understand why the licensing costs are high."
"Its pricing is very competitive. As compared to VMware SRM, Zerto has reduced our OPEX cost by at least 30%."
"Zerto does a per-workload licensing model, per-server. It is simple and straightforward, but it is not super flexible. It is kind of a one size fits all. They charge the same price for those workloads. I feel like they could have some flexible licensing option possibly based on criticality, just so we could protect less important work. I would love to protect every workload in my environment with Zerto, whether I really need it or not, but the cost is such that I really have to justify that protection. So, if we had some more flexibility, e.g., you could protect servers with a two-, three-, or four-hour RPO at a certain price point versus mission-critical every five minutes, then I would be interested in that."
"The cost is one of the only drawbacks of Zerto because it's very high, and the overall impact of the solution on our organization is relatively low. This is why we are trying to figure out if another product could fulfill the same role for cheaper."
"Zerto previously had a perplexing licensing structure, but they have since resolved it by implementing a unified license."
"Its price is fair. It is very cost-effective compared to the cost of the labor for your workers and associates."
"Zerto is like a Ferrari. It's very fast but not the cheapest solution. You're paying a high price for quality and the assurance that you will have the environment up and steady."
"My company has to make yearly payments towards the licensing costs attached to the solution. There is no need to pay any additional fees apart from the licensing costs attached to the solution."
