Near-zero downtime has protected critical workloads and now simplifies hybrid cloud recovery
The best features of HPE Zerto Software are mainly very sophisticated and relevant to the current market. The data protection CDP part has real-time replication, unlike other solutions that have snapshot backups. We can set it up hourly, making it ideal for use with workloads. Another attraction is the near-zero RTO, with automated failover within minutes and one-click failover and failback. Currently, we are using a hybrid cloud solution, and HPE Zerto Software supports multi-cloud environments, making it easy to migrate between on-premises and cloud. Regarding the impact of HPE Zerto Software on our RTOs, we have near-zero RTO, meaning the system must be back online within thirty minutes if we measure the time. It is very quick to recover services. With HPE Zerto Software's near-synchronous replication, we have some CDP protection, so we typically write interceptions along with some asynchronous replication. There is almost real-time replication available.

Easy to use and mange with reasonable pricing
The main feature is a specific file type. If we want some PDF files just to back up, the prefix is very easy, and we do everything in Veeam backup. It's straightforward to set up. It's stable. The solution is easy to use. You can centrally manage it. It's potentially free to use.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable features of this solution is the ease of use. In the event of a disaster, you don't need a technical person to actually run the software. You can bring anybody in, with the right instructions and credentials, and they can run the solution."
"There wasn't anything in place that compares to what we're getting from Zerto."
"The ability to test a failover non-disruptively with Zerto is valuable, as it doesn't create any downtime for the business."
"The simplicity of replication and test failover make this a very easy-to-use solution."
"We can failover to an isolated environment and validate the application without impacting the production environment. We can do more testing in a non-impactful way..."
"It's a one-stop solution for doing your disaster recovery, irrespective of what cloud you are running."
"Zerto has made the testing and the actual failover process of our replicated virtual machines seamless."
"It keeps our website up and running without interruption."
"The Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows is easy to use and performing a recovery is easy to do."
"This solution has got all of the functionality that I need in order to work with it."
"The most valuable feature is the ease of use."
"There is no trouble or lack of features within this solution, which is the reason we have chosen this solution to work with."
"Technical support is good."
"If you have windows machine at home and you'd like a backup, you can always download their free edition and plug in an external hard disk, and do a full backup of your laptop."
"The interface of this solution is quite good."
"It is easy to deploy."

Cons

"In Azure... We have to make sure that every resource group is tagged correctly, with the correct team and department because we have to bill them at the end of the month. The problem is that Zerto does not have that ability. When the product fails over or migrates a VM from on-prem, or even within Azure, to another site, it does not give you the option of selecting an existing resource group."
"The technical support has room for improvement."
"The HPE Zerto Software can be improved with more visibility."
"The only thing I really don't like about Zerto is that the ZVM has to be a Windows server. I can spin up any OBA template whenever I want to, but if it has an OS that's tied to it, then I have to involve the OS team from my company. That drives me crazy."
"The number-one area in which they need to improve their product is what I would call "automatic self-healing." This is related to running them at scale... We have 1,000 VRAs and if any one of their VRAs has a problem, goes offline, all of the customer protection groups and all of the customers that are tied to that VRA are not replicating at all. That means the RPO is slipping until somebody makes a manual effort to fix the issue. It has become a full-time job at my company for somebody to keep Zerto running all the time, everywhere, and to keep all the customers up and going."
"The licensing is confusing and complicated."
"It would also be nice if they could find a way to make it where one VM does not impact the entire journal history of the VPG."
"I think Zerto should make the product less expensive, as that's the only reason many people are not registering the product with their companies."
"I am not very impressed by the technical support I received when I had an issue."
"Interface could possibly be improved."
"We can't use tape for primary storage on Veeam."
"With the currency exchange, the solution ends up being quite expensive."
"A lower price would always be beneficial."
"The solution lacks instant recovery."
"If I'm trying to locate an item to restore from one of the backups, I would appreciate the ability to perform a global search on the catalog."
"Some users might think the interface could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Licensing is based on the number of VMs to replicate. The first thing should be to get the number of VMs to replicate based on your business needs."
"Zerto is not overly expensive. It's worth what we're getting for it, but with tough times, a discount would be beneficial."
"From a pricing standpoint, there is value in it without question. However, it can become quite expensive when you start looking at the number of workloads you have in the environment and what you would like to do."
"I think the cost is reasonable for VM licensing. It's not outside the scope of an enterprise product."
"It is very expensive. It is overpriced. No doubt. What held us up for many years from committing to buying it was always the cost. That's also why we only have 10 licenses."
"The cost per VM is a bit high."
"Pricing is kind of expensive, but for what we get, it is probably worth it. I know they just had a huge price increase due to the VMware stuff getting expensive, which added about a thousand dollars a month to our bill."
"Zerto is like a Ferrari. It's very fast but not the cheapest solution. You're paying a high price for quality and the assurance that you will have the environment up and steady."
"We have an annual license."
"It is less expensive than one of its variants."
"We have a cloud provider agreement with Veeam. We are also paying for the agent."
"We have the Community Edition and I believe we bought a license for 200 instances. Veeam Agent is mainly used for our branch offices. Those only have one or two Hyper-V servers, so it's covered with the Community Edition. Basically, it's free. I remember Veeam 7.0 or 8.0 wasn't free, but the Community Edition is."
"We purchased a three-year license, and I think that the prices are ok."
"For the licensing of Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows, the customer can choose to pay monthly or yearly. It's up to the customer."
"The solution is inexpensive, more so than other products."
"Pricing is based on license packaging and duration. Longer term licenses are less per year and license packages also offer a discount."
