Near-zero downtime has protected critical workloads and now simplifies hybrid cloud recovery
The best features of HPE Zerto Software are mainly very sophisticated and relevant to the current market. The data protection CDP part has real-time replication, unlike other solutions that have snapshot backups. We can set it up hourly, making it ideal for use with workloads. Another attraction is the near-zero RTO, with automated failover within minutes and one-click failover and failback. Currently, we are using a hybrid cloud solution, and HPE Zerto Software supports multi-cloud environments, making it easy to migrate between on-premises and cloud. Regarding the impact of HPE Zerto Software on our RTOs, we have near-zero RTO, meaning the system must be back online within thirty minutes if we measure the time. It is very quick to recover services. With HPE Zerto Software's near-synchronous replication, we have some CDP protection, so we typically write interceptions along with some asynchronous replication. There is almost real-time replication available.

The backup for a large amount of data is slow. When there's a large amount of data, sometimes the backup isn't completed in time. I have a 24 hour cycle, so it doesn't get completed in 24 hours with the large amount of data. With Veritas NetBackup, I can take 20 terabytes of backup in a day.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Continuous protection is Zerto's most valuable aspect."
"Zerto has helped to reduce downtime with several customers; for example, we had a customer who had many of their VMs encrypted, with about 40 to 60 terabytes worth of data that would have taken days to recover from backup, but we were able to bring them up at the DR site and get them up and running within hours, avoiding millions in potential costs and a major ripple effect in the title industry."
"We were able to see its benefits immediately after we deployed it."
"We use the solution for one-to-one replication from data center one to data center two, from server one to server two, or from the cloud to on-premises."
"The solution is really good and I am super happy with Zerto."
"It's extremely easy to use with one of the shortest setups I've ever done."
"If we lost our data center and had to recover it, Zerto would save us a great deal of time."
"I've never had a solution that is this intensive and yet this easy to deploy."
"The most valuable features are the Self-Service, and the ability to search the data."
"If you are looking for a reliable and scalable enterprise-class solution, you should consider this solution."
"The cataloging is the best feature, as it takes millions of frames for the backup and, because it's incremental, it takes less time to complete."
"The command-line interface is good."
"In terms of stability, I've found it to be very stable. I've walked into the server room when it was at 60 degrees Celcius, and it was still running fine."
"The most valuable features are the self-service features and the ability to search the data."
"I will highly recommend this product for excellent and quick backup solution in small and large IBM I Series environment."
"The cataloging is the best feature. It takes millions of frames for the backup. It's incremental, so it takes less time to complete."

Cons

"HPE Zerto Software could be improved by including everything in the same package. Currently, I have to administer them separately, which can be more complicated for the infrastructure team."
"We wanted to shut down the dev environment to focus on the prod environment. We couldn't find any option in Zerto to do that."
"Zerto's setup process could be simpler."
"We have had some issues with trying to get certain parts of the backup or restore functionality to work."
"One improvement that could make it easier would be to have an easier way to track journal usage and a little bit more training around journal sizing."
"I haven't seen any significant features or improvements in the past few major version releases."
"I had to have my colleague contact technical support because we had an issue where VMs in VMware were getting blocked, and we weren't able to delete them."
"An integrated encryption would allow for faster initial install and connection to the remote cloud site."
"My advice to anybody who is considering this solution is to conduct a proof of concept first because everybody's needs are different, and this product is not suitable for every kind of backup."
"It is unmanageable. Support would be good."
"The backup for a large amount of data is slow."
"These days, we are thinking about pushing another solution because of the poor support from IBM."
"I would like the possibility to back up the infrastructure and then replicate it upon on restart, without having to orchestrate the starting of the VM."
"The backup for a large amount of data is slow. When there's a large amount of data, sometimes the backup isn't completed in time."
"IBM ProtectTIER could improve by being more user-friendly."
"The configuration wizards are still complex and hard to navigate. These should be easier to manage."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing is adequate at the standard of the product, but there could be "always" some improvement. We would like to see a consumption model that would charge in a DR scenario, where you're failing over and consuming those resources, instead of a per-protected-node model."
"My understanding is that it's expensive but worth the price."
"The pricing is straightforward."
"I have heard that it is expensive, but that is not my world."
"This solution is far less expensive than SRM and NetBackup."
"Its pricing is very competitive. As compared to VMware SRM, Zerto has reduced our OPEX cost by at least 30%."
"Zerto is more cost-effective than Azure."
"Price-wise, Zerto is fairly reasonable and I can't complain about it when we compare it against Oracle and SAP licensing."
"We have a capacity-based license, which is managed centrally for all the sites of my company."
"IBM ProtectTIER is an expensive solution."
"This solution is very expensive."
"The customer can decide how they want to purchase a license. However, the price of the solution is expensive."
