High availability servers have boosted hosted payment services but still need better local support
We are not using PowerVM because of certain limitations; it is on a back-end engine. However, we are using other components such as vSphere for some small interfaces, and those are the main components we are utilizing. Since these servers are fully dedicated to various high-end solutions, they have some embedded features that their kernel and applications are using, which are bound to that functionality. We may not provide an exact assessment on its usage, but we are considering those products for some AI solutions; however, we are currently in the review stage and have not concluded our evaluation on how those are utilized yet. We are aware of the pricing of HPE ProLiant DL servers, but not off the cuff. We have obviously acquired those solutions ex-Pakistan, so they are on the rise, and while we do not remember those prices offhand, they are generally better than the IBM series, although they are becoming slightly pricey in Pakistan due to processor shortages and demand. Improvements could be made in database engine hosting services because, as it stands, the pricing of Oracle is too high from both the service and software solution perspectives. If pricing can be reduced, especially for DB servers, that could have a direct positive impact on the overall solution. Regarding reliability, it has been satisfactory so far, but since the distributors are not physically present in Pakistan, that creates a risk for long-term large customers. They provide import-based services, necessitating us to over-invest in backup stock and offline servers. If there was a market presence from those players in Pakistan, it could benefit both clients and distributors by reducing the need for investment in backup inventory.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"With each user having its own physical CPU/GPU, enough memory etc. (when dealing with HDI) the overall user experience will be top notch, as to be expected."
"Scalability is great, and that was one of the key bits, as it has the scalability option in which you can fit four on each blade and have the capacity to keep on going."
"Everything looks to have a product superstar in hand: less energy consumption, lower cost, less space, scalable and customizable."
"The solution has very good performance and has been reliable."
"In case of large network deployments, nothing can beat HPE Blade Server Technology (with/without VC technology)."
"Stability and reliability; it's rare that it fails and, when it does, we have HPE support with a four-hour turnaround and it gets fixed."
"HP pricing and licensing schemas fitted well into our agendas."
"The flexibility of using storage options would be one valuable feature, another would be competitive pricing, and yet another would be the quite high top speeds on the processor."
"Our monitoring tool has a database, so we need a server with a fast IO."
"The feature that I find the most valuable is that all alerts are integrated with HPE InfoSight. Any problem related to an HPE server can be solved remotely at L1, L2 level."
"Its reliability and after-sales support are very good."

Cons

"I think there's room for improvement. It doesn't work properly yet."
"However, with great potential gains, there is a big risk."
"Why not spend the same (or a bit more perhaps) amount on virtual?"
"I was more or less involved in the initial setup. It was complex."
"DL3 is not scalable. You cannot scale them versus replace scalable hardware, like going to Itanium servers."
"It is too expensive. Its price should be improved. The system admin interface should have better visibility while troubleshooting a problem, even when the problem is coming from the application."
"I want to improve hyper-converged sites."
"There is a challenge sometimes with having quick access to some of these components when you need them. It takes a lot of time to get spare parts from genuine sellers."
"I would like to see additional work on making the intelligent provisioning work with VMware."
"The technical support leaves a lot to be desired."
"ProLiant servers could be more scalable. For example, some models can only contain four hard drives, but many of our customers expect six. If they were to add another extendable hard drive slot, it would be easier to sell the servers to our customers."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"This is an expensive product and there is licensing required for iLO, which is the HPE monitoring system."
"It is not expensive. Its price is similar to other solutions."
"I rate the product price an eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is low price and ten is high price."
"The price is a little too high; it could be reduced."
"There are less expensive solutions than HPE ProLiant DL Servers. However, there is a lot of value in this solution."
"They need to work with Microsoft to make the licensing costs better and more efficient."
"We did not need to pay for a license for the use of HP DL servers, just for normal hardcore support."
"HPE ProLiant DL Servers are one of the best-selling solutions in this industry. There is not a license required for this solution."
