We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"We can use Sentinel's playbook to block threats. It covers all of the environment, giving us great visibility.""In Azure Sentinel, we have found, they do have a store in their capability. AI and intelligence features. We found that to be very helpful for us because some other things we do need to integrate again or find another vendor for the store""The most valuable features in my experience are the UEBA, LDAP, the threat scheduler, and integration with third-party straight perform like the MISP.""If you know how to do KQL (kusto query language) queries, which are how you query the log data inside Sentinel, the information is pretty rich. You can get down to a good level of detail regarding event information or notifications.""Native integration with Microsoft security products or other Microsoft software is also crucial. For example, we can integrate Sentinel with Office 365 with one click. Other integrations aren't as easy. Sometimes, we have to do it manually.""The AI capability is one of the main features of the solution because I believe that in the market, there are few solutions that are providing security solutions based on AI and machine learning.""Having your logs put all in one place with machine learning working on those logs is a good feature. I don't need to start thinking, "Where are my logs?" My logs are in a centralized repository, like Log Analytics, which is why you can't use Sentinel without Log Analytics. Having all those logs in one place is an advantage.""The in-built SOAR of Sentinel is valuable. Kusto Query Language is also valuable for the ease of writing queries and ease of getting insights from the logs. Schedule-based queries within Sentinel are also valuable. I found these three features most useful for my projects."

"The support team is responsive.""What sets Chronicle apart from other solutions is its emphasis on threat hunting rather than solely serving as a monitoring tool.""The tool's most valuable feature is the search option, allowing easy navigation.""Google Chronicle Suite provides useful APIs.""The log folder is fairly simple.""The product's most valuable feature is threat hunting. We can detect the threats directly from the console from the past data as well.""The platform's most valuable features are multiple connectors and data output flexibility regarding dashboards and user experience.""Google Chronicle Suite is a highly scalable solution with good search capabilities."

"SolarWinds is easy to configure, and it provides timely alerts.""The graphical user interface is very user-friendly. SolarWinds is a hybrid solution so you can use it across many platforms.""It has in-depth monitoring capabilities and an easy way for setting up dashboards. I can expand in various areas, or I can reduce areas. It supports different types of breakdowns, filters, and rules. It is very simple for an out-of-the-box type of product. It doesn't take a lot of time to figure it out, which is unlike some of the solutions that I have looked at. It meets all the aspects.""We did previously use a different solution, but SolarWinds is much better. It's easy to interact with SolarWinds. It's easy to operate, easy to configure and is generally easier compared to what we were working with before.""Some of the rules are most valuable because you can be notified about various things, such as spyware or things that are going on in the internal network.""This tool is simple to use.""It's easy to build rules and actions based on the logs and event types we collect with the software.""The most valuable feature is the ease of use for the end user."

Cons
"The built-in SOAR is not really good out-of-the-box. The SOAR relies on logic apps and you almost need to have some kind of developer background to be able to make these logic apps. Most security people cannot develop anything...""Microsoft Sentinel should provide an alternative query language to KQL for users who lack KQL expertise.""Multi-tenancy, in my opinion, needs to be improved. I believe it can do better as a managed service provider.""Not all information shows up in Sentinel. Sometimes there are items provided in 365 and if you looked in Sentinel you would not see them and therefore think they do not exist. There can be discrepancies between Microsoft tools.""We'd like also a better ticketing system, which is older.""Sentinel can be used in two ways. With other tools like QRadar, I don't need to run queries. Using Sentinel requires users to learn KQL to run technical queries and check things. If they don't know KQL, they can't fully utilize the solution.""I would like Sentinel to have more out-of-the-box analytics rules. There are already more than 400 rules, but they could add more industry-specific ones. For example, you could have sets of out-of-the-box rules for banking, financial sector, insurance, automotive, etc., so it's easier for people to use it out of the box. Structuring the rules according to industry might help us.""Currently, the watchlist feature is being utilized, and although there have been improvements, it is still not fully optimized."

More Microsoft Sentinel Cons →

"The configuration is not optimal.""The product's default dashboard feature has a few limitations regarding availability.""In terms of improvement, the UI can be a bit challenging for beginners.""The tool needs to improve tasking packages. Its GUI needs to be improved. The product needs to include time-based filtration. We can only see the alert detection timeline now.""The solution's graphical user interface (GUI) should be more user-friendly.""The tool is complicated for a first-time user. It should also include newer APIs.""A few areas are difficult to understand for someone who has less experience using the product.""The tool is a little bit difficult to use compared to Microsoft Sentinel."

"Under the new system, it is not upgradable the way they say. When you try to do an upgrade, it doesn't really work unless you dump everything and start from scratch. You lose a lot of your nodes. Whenever you set your nodes up and everything else, they don't want to bring those nodes back in, so you have to really go back and restructure all your nodes. I went from version 6.5 to version 6.6 and then to version 6.7. I then went to version 2019, and now it is version 2020. It would be good if we can upgrade without having to delete everything and start from scratch. They can maybe build more KPIs and other things for the dashboard. Some of the other systems already have built-in KPIs. SolarWinds is starting to catch up, but it is not there yet. They can include some of the business or industry standards for tracking the time, that is, the meantime to detect (MTTD) and the meantime to resolve (MTTR). They can also find a way to build a KPI that measures the number of instances of port scans experienced in a week or a month.""I would like to have a more customizable dashboard.""SolarWinds should improve its correlation capabilities. The correlation does not automatically detect and reduce the events fast enough. You have to manually do a correlation report, which means the tool is not scalable in many ways.""I imagine we will have to develop our own reports soon, this seems to be more cumbersome.""It is a very technical program. They can simplify it so that it isn't so hard to deal with.""We'd like more customization capabilities.""It can be difficult for users who are inexperienced with the solution.""One of the drawbacks of being so flexible is that it is also a fairly complicated software application to install, configure, and maintain."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It comes with a Microsoft subscription which the customer has, so they don't have to invest somewhere else."
  • "It is a consumption-based license model. bands at 100, 200, 400 GB per day etc. Azure Sentinel Pricing | Microsoft Azure"
  • "Good monthly operational cost model for the detection and response outcomes delivered, M365 logs don't count toward the limits which is a good benefit."
  • "I have had mixed feedback. At one point, I heard a client say that it sometimes seems more expensive. Most of the clients are on Office 365 or M365, and they are forced to take Azure SIEM because of the integration."
  • "It is kind of like a sliding scale. There are different tiers of pricing that go from $100 per day up to $3,500 per day. So, it just kind of depends on how much data is being stored. There can be additional costs to the standard license other than the additional data. It just kind of depends on what other services you're spinning up in Azure, or if you're using something like Azure log analytics."
  • "I am just paying for the log space with Azure Sentinel. It costs us about $2,000 a month. Most of the logs are free. We are only paying money for Azure Firewall logs because email logs or Azure AD logs are free to use for us."
  • "Sentinel is a bit expensive. If you can figure a way of configuring it to meet your needs, then you can find a way around the cost."
  • "Azure Sentinel is very costly, or at least it appears to be very costly. The costs vary based on your ingestion and your retention charges."

  • "The solution's pricing is dependent on the data amount."
  • "We have to pay extra charges for the amount of data transfer and technical support services."
  • "The tool is cheaper than Microsoft Sentinel."

  • "Licensing is on devices, so if you have many, then this may be high."
  • "We do a yearly license renewal. For a year, the solution costs roughly $500,000 USD. There are no costs beyond this yearly fee."
  • "The pricing model would benefit from having package deals with other SolarWinds products."
  • "Licenses can only be purchased in blocks of fifty at a time."
  • "It is in the appropriate mid-range. It is not as expensive as some of the other solutions. It is also not cheap."

    How Chronicle works:
    1. Collection - Chronicle ingests your own data into a private container at petabyte scale with 1-year retention.
    2. Detection - all of that data is aggregated, normalized, and linked with OOTB detections and threat intelligence.
    3. Investigation - that data is then exposed via case management, sub-second search, collaboration, and contextual mapping.
    4. Response - rapid response times occur via automated playbooks, incident management, and closed-loop feedback.

When TriGeo was acquired by SolarWinds, TriGeo SIM became known as SolarWinds Log & Event Manager. This product is a leading Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) product and log management solution, which provides log collection, analysis, and real-time correlation.
