Load balancing has improved traffic distribution and currently supports high availability upgrades
F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) offers effective load balancing methods that help distribute traffic across our servers, whether we have two or several. This load balancing feature stands out as it is the fundamental work we do with F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM). While I recognize there are many features, such as iRules, which I have not explored yet, we primarily work on VIPs, pool members, and traffic distribution. The load balancing algorithms' flexibility makes them very useful for our team, enabling us to choose different servers and manage load effectively. We use various methods based on user or application requirements, making the algorithms set up by F5 in the backend quite helpful. F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) positively impacts our organization primarily through its load balancing capabilities. We avoid traffic overload on individual servers by placing backend servers behind F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) VIP. This load balancing helps us manage traffic effectively. Since the configuration of the I-series, we have had smooth performance, and with the recent migration to the R-series, it is working faster than before, providing positive outcomes for our operations. Since moving to the R-series, I notice improved performance; it is user-friendly and handles traffic efficiently. The upgrading process is different as we create tenants and a main host. R-series has better CPU and memory, leading to higher throughput with minimal downtime, making it a significant improvement over the I-series.

Reliable protection and smooth setup enhance company security
Currently, I have two firewalls, with one located in Sorocaba, model 90D, and the other in São Paulo, model 30D. They are connected by VPN. I use the firewalls for VPN and final protection for my company, and my equipment is maintained by an internet company called Multiprox The equipment works…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I like that F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM) is a product that comes with valuable features, but what stands out from all features is load balancing."
"It is really awesome; you can scale from one or two servers to hundreds of servers, they have all the modules that a customer needs, and you can go for on-premise or cloud deployment so you can have whatever you need."
"Technical support is very good in terms of their technical knowledge and assistance."
"F5's attack signatures and automation are the most valuable features. The disaster recovery capabilities are also excellent. You don't need to do anything. It has automatic failover from production."
"It integrates with AWS WAF, which makes it easy to deploy without changes to your infrastructure."
"Its user interface is very easy to use on a day-to-day basis. It is very user-friendly."
"The most valuable features of the solution are in the area of DDoS and WAF."
"We can load balance the request to servers, which was the main reason we bought the product."
"The product allows the users to adjust the thresholds."
"We use it to protect our users and their data."
"Packet inspection has been effective for mitigating DDoS attacks."
"We've been completely satisfied with the product."
"I find this product the best on-premises (in-line) DDoS mitigation solution that suits my current and future requirements."
"This solution can protect Layer 3, Layer 4 and Layer 7 attacks of applications for us, and this is important."
"We have researched them all, and it's a good solution all around."
"The most valuable feature is the cloud DDoS scrubbing capability."

Cons

"They could improve the product's ease of use. There is some confusion how to operate it."
"I would like them to have more flexible models."
"It is a hardware load balancer, and its installation procedure is more complex than a software load balancer. There are pros and cons of using hardware load balancing. You have to have specific hardware deployed in your data center to activate this load balancer. They never came up with any software-based load balancing solution. It is all hardware-based."
"I would like to see better integration."
"Older OS releases may have had some bugs (active/active on reboot, I think we saw on one OS version)."
"I'm not very sure about the security with F5 BIG-IP Local Traffic Manager (LTM). We have our own private data center, but we are going to migrate our private data center into the Azure cloud environment. Security will then be a major concern when we migrate our own whole infrastructure to the public cloud."
"Reporting could be improved and configuration made easier."
"If they made it easier for engineers to get F5 training then it would be better."
"I find that there have been issues in the past year with the solution hanging. It freezes often."
"The only thing they need to do is to automate it. Today, you must create tools that do not require the use of an expert or anyone with special skills."
"Alerts and reporting features must be improved."
"The main improvement would be to change the firewall model, however, currently, everything is fixed and working well."
"Technical support isn't too good with Fortinet. They could be more responsive and helpful overall."
"The challenge lies within the customer environment, particularly in Brazil, where companies have stringent security requirements for implementing solutions."
"The product’s pricing needs improvement."
"The web interface could be much better."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"This solution comes with a standard license, and there are also extra licenses that can be obtained. The licenses are purchasable for durations of one, two, three, and five years. The hardware is something to consider when purchasing"
"F5 isn’t cheap but is worth the price."
"It is a bit expensive product. Kemp Loadmaster is much cheaper than F5. Its licensing is on a yearly basis. It can be for one year or three years."
"It is sort of a commodity product. A load balancer is a load balancer. What will be, at the end of the day, the cheapest option or have the best performance, that is what it will come down to."
"I use a yearly subscription, which is the most expensive one now compared to its competitors."
"The only area that has room for improvement would be pricing, so its competitors do not have a say."
"It's fair, it's not too expensive. Maybe just a little high."
"Though functionality is high, its cost can be considered slightly higher than its competitors."
"The product’s pricing needs improvement."
"The solution is reasonably priced."
"It's quite pricey."
