Reliable switching has delivered long‑term uptime, strong PoE support, and predictable performance
Cisco Systems Catalyst Switches are highly regarded for their performance, reliability, and enterprise-grade capabilities. My main reservation, however, is the pricing. The cost of Cisco Catalyst Switches—and Cisco products in general—is relatively high, especially in many African markets where organizations often need to balance budget constraints with required functionality. There are alternative vendors that offer comparable features at a lower price point. While they may not always match Cisco’s ecosystem, stability, or full feature depth, many businesses still choose them because of the significant cost savings. Another consideration is licensing, which can add to the overall total cost of ownership depending on the deployment model and required features. Overall, Cisco Catalyst Switches remain premium enterprise solutions, but when compared with other OEMs, their higher acquisition and licensing costs can be a major deciding factor for cost-conscious organizations.

Router configuration facilitates effective network solutions
The configurations and CLI of the Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms are valuable features. While I did not appreciate them initially, I have grown to value them. The stability of the router is reliable, and they perform according to our requirements. We are using firewall systems and all other security mechanisms which are state-of-the-art with the Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms. The main benefit of the Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms is their stability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We have used Cisco Catalyst Switches to achieve our goals with stability and blanket level of performance."
"We use the VLANs to separate library, office, and individual apartments. With some of the reporting that receive, we're able to take and track down where people like to put in their own wireless routers. Sometimes they will take a DSL modem from AT&T that they brought from home, hook it in backward, and it will give rogue addresses causing issues."
"We heavily use the SmartPort features. It has really helped us. The U.S. policies are handled by the auto SmartPort feature"
"The Cisco software ties all the hardware together better than the competition."
"The solution is very easy to set up."
"The platform significantly improved our organization by addressing latency issues in our network."
"If we are providing a switching solution, it's not just switching, it's a whole solution with DNA, and that is where the whole concept of Network Management and Network Assurance comes in, so Catalyst plays a big role in putting everything together and providing a whole solution to the customer."
"The most valuable feature is the ease of configuring a switch."
"The product is highly scalable."
"We have seen a massive ROI from using Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms."
"We haven't faced any issues with the tool's integration."
"I recommend Juniper because it is a code router that is easy to configure and manage."
"It's a stable product."
"The most valuable Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platform is its ability to do routing in any way that I need. It's more than capable of handling the load I'm currently sending."
"The main benefit of the Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms is their stability."
"Technical support has been very helpful and responsive to us."

Cons

"The cost of this product is very high and not all companies can afford it."
"The configuration process is hard."
"If most of the switch ports get damaged then you have to replace the whole switch."
"The pricing is on the high end. Recently, at the beginning of this year, we actually did a comparison of Cisco and HP products."
"We need to rely on other devices to provide management features."
"The solution could improve by allowing administrators to create scripts to help automate processes to make tasks easier."
"While the solution was very good for its time, this may not be so, at present, for big, leading enterprises, such as a bank consisting of 10,000 people."
"Scaling can be quite costly."
"For an enterprise, I'd say an enterprise needs a multifunctional device, and this is not it."
"Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms could improve by having a graphical interface. A lot of the younger generation tend to be used to graphical interfaces, command line tends to scare them."
"Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms is not scalable. It has fixed configurations."
"Although the support for this solution is good, there is still room for improvement."
"It needs to be more multifunctional for enterprises."
"Although the support for this solution is good, there is still room for improvement."
"Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms should incorporate gen AI features."
"Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms should improve by being more agile with new technology that sits on top of the router."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"It is reasonably priced because we have already conducted a tender, allowing Cisco and other vendors to compete for the best price."
"It would be great for the user if Cisco lowered the prices for their routers and switches."
"I would say that the pricing of the solution falls within the moderate to higher range."
"The price of a Cisco Catalyst Switches license is expensive."
"It is expensive."
"This is expensive, even when compared to competitors' products."
"They are expensive."
"Try to buy everything you need in bulk purchases and ask Cisco for volume discounts."
"The price of Juniper MX Series Universal Routing Platforms is reasonable. We are on a perpetual license. I do not have any maintenance service as part of the license."
"The tool's pricing is in the middle."
