Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

Has accelerated AI experimentation and simplified transition from prototype to production at scale
The Karini team is responsive and continuously innovating. Scaling this responsiveness is critical to meet the rapid development of generative AI technologies. Karini’s Forward-Deployed Engineers provide instant feedback to Karini’s engineers, and the deployment of enhancements or novel developments continues to keep pace with the overall acceptance of our customers. I expect that demand will intensify quickly, and Karini’s capability to provide near-real-time enhancements is critical to our ability to meet that demand.

Pros

"Camunda seems to have a lot of traction, maturity, and stability. It also matches the need for agile development."
"I've found the active community most valuable but it also provides you with a lot of other features."
"The way to create workflows is straightforward, which is one of the major benefits of the Camunda platform."
"Camunda serves as an automation library and provides lightweight deployment to the cloud."
"Camunda is a scalable product."
"Since day one, our goal was to build reusable components that can be used in other projects, and we recently did a discovery for one of our projects and we found that we could reuse 80 percent of what we had developed on the Camunda platform, and the microservices and the connectors were reusable and that really reduced the development effort drastically for that use case."
"We can easily define and deploy business processes. Camunda provides the tools that allow business people to design business processes. We don't have to have developers for it. It is so easy to use that our business people can go into the tool and model their business processes. We get time to do other things than just designing business processes."
"It allows me to present or to demonstrate the business process flow, visually, without having to resort to PowerPoint, Visio, or other products."
"The Karini team understands how to operationalize sophisticated GenAI business solutions at enterprise scale, allowing for rapid experimentation that does not require staffing up with data scientists, machine learning specialists, or AI practitioners."

"Karini GenAI allowed us to achieve our goals to solve a customer problem, deliver value, and provide a successful entry point into our GenAI journey."

Cons

"Some BPM standard functionalities are not yet supported in Camunda and they can really cause serious problems for implementers."
"Camunda needs to improve its user interface for low-code development and provide more user interface options beyond the basic workflow."
"The migration strategy needs to be improved."
"The primary issue regarding the Camuto platform is its high cost of training. This is why I haven't discussed it extensively, as compared to other products that are more affordable in terms of developer training."
"The deployment model could be improved for easier implementation."
"Customization and tech stack could be up-to-date."
"I would say that Camunda should actually focus on small cases as well. There's a lot of space out there, for small businesses."
"It is hard to say if this solution is scalable. We've contacted their support team on this, and sometimes it takes very long to get an answer from them."
"Karini is still expanding its list of features. As we add new features, additional connections and technologies around AI must be incorporated to ensure we stay current and continue to improve our platform."
"Scaling this responsiveness is critical to meet the rapid development of generative AI technologies."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"There were some features that were only available in the paid version."
"We are using the open-source version, free of charge. We didn't bother with the enterprise features."
"Cheaper licensing and resources than competitors"
"The cost of this solution is better than some competing products."
"There is a bit of scope for improvement in how the licensing and pricing are done. They are based on the number of processing instances you execute on the cluster... but on the self-hosted mode, the pricing model should be customized."
"Its price is decent. Everything is included in the license. The Community version is also good to start with. We are using the Community version."
"I think Camunda BPM can improve their licensing costs. It isn't easy to find clients with Camunda BPM licenses mainly because it's quite expensive."
"I tried to get some information about buying the license for the solution, but I found it kind of hard to understand the business model."
