Scalability and the online maintainability of definitions are definite advantages for us
We've had it for so long, so it's status quo. But we've added all sorts of functionality to our applications and there are no issues with databases. Anything developers request, we're able to accomplish. Also, we deal a lot with government regulation - and not to talk about what the company does - but anything that they require of us, because we transmit data back and forth with them, we're able to do that with no problems. And there have been a lot of changes over the past five years that our government dictated regarding what we actually end up doing. So, we're able to be extremely flexible with that.

Enhancing database management with operational efficiency but needs better compatibility
Era should be compatible with various environments, such as VMware and Red Hat, to be hypervisor agnostic. Due to increasing adoption among enterprise clients, integration with Kubernetes platforms is also needed. Furthermore, the product can benefit from improving its understanding of architectural setup and communicating its limitations to users and partners.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is a solid product."
"It definitely cuts down on our support costs. I do not get woken up in the middle of the night very often for a problem with Datacom."
"Scalability is definitely one thing. The size of the database can grow without any issues. We've got one database table that's got over a billion rows in it; quite a bit of data, and it handles access like a champ."
"The initial setup is fairly straightforward for a mainframe product."
"Nowadays, CA is doing a lot of improving as far as online maintainability of definitions, which is a huge improvement over the past. I'm able to do a lot of changes without any outage."
"The most valuable feature is its robust infrastructure management tools."
"There are a lot of options for working with the database."
"I wanted a tool that offers enough monitoring for everything related to load balancing in my databases."
"The patching is the most valuable feature. We spent a lot of time and effort on the patching of our SQL instances after hours. With Nutanix Era, you can schedule and automate them during your normal operational hours (during the day). You schedule all the patching, then everything happens automatically with minor tickets from the engineer. So, our patching, which took four hours, went down to an hour for the engineer. This is much better for us from a return on investment perspective."
"What I like about this solution is that it's more reliable compared to other solutions."
"The solution enables us to speed up the creation of new instances."
"Nutanix Era effectively reduces operational overheads by streamlining the application team's implementation of multiple environments."
"I appreciate being able to provision a database quickly from our side. We provision it and hand it off. It makes work much easier. Previously, it would take a week or two to do the same in a traditional way, whereas now, it gets completed within about an hour."

Cons

"For the "no-outage maintainability" of things, they are making improvements as we speak, but there is definitely still room for more of that."
"The only minor issue that we have had with Datacom is in the installation guide: Some of the sizings for the databases have not really worked out for us, so we had to go in and resize them."
"The solution needs to improve compatibility with other back-ups and products."
"The downside of this solution is that it's more expensive than its competitors."
"Nutanix Database Service could be improved by making it just a little bit less complex regarding the interface."
"This solution could be improved by integrating with more database providers."
"The initial setup was a little tedious and complex. If they could make the setup slightly more user-friendly, then that would definitely be beneficial. If they could give a clear indication of what ports are required across the business and multiple VLANs, then your prep work can be done beforehand and before you do the actual installation. Because the documentation that was provided was not 100 percent accurate, so we had to do a lot of custom firewall rules after we deployed Nutanix Era."
"I don't have a comprehensive answer because we're not utilizing it extensively."
"If there were data integration services included with the platform then it would be interesting, and it would help us a lot."
"The solution could improve by providing more support for more vendors."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"This solution is reasonably priced."
"Era is quite expensive. The thing that will be a showstopper for them in the long run is if you look at it from a technical perspective on what it provides and weigh it up against consolidation of multiple other software suites."
"Not everyone can afford it. It's a bit expensive, so the price has to be improved."
"The price of the solution is expensive."
"I wasn't involved much with the pricing and setup costs and licenses. The pricing was as expected."
"Pricing wasn't a surprise. It was what we were expecting it to be."
"It is amazing. The pricing compared to the time saved is nothing. It's worth the cost."
"Licensing costs will be the main scalability problem."
