Offers great utility with synthetic data generation and reliable technical support
Overall, this can definitely be the advantage of the product, and I'm happy with these functionalities that Broadcom provides. I totally recommend any application working on the database layer directly and I don't recommend any applications from other external vendors to perform the same function. Oracle and PostgreSQL have similar applications and they both work directly in the database, reading directly from the database, transforming values in another table within the same database, making it easy to run. The solution is saving me time and money in general because this application saves money and a lot of effort. I can generate any amount of data from Broadcom Test Data Manager, which has a lot of information and equations regarding this task. It saves money because my testing team needs this data to create use cases tested on realistic data. Broadcom Test Data Manager adds great value to my organization, but I believe it can be afforded only in international, large-sized companies. It is not affordable for medium or small-sized organizations.

Good support, stable, and offers encryption at both the column and table level
The most valuable feature is the data encryption option for columns and tables. We are also getting the benefit of detection data. If I want to share data with another Oracle user then the data sharing is automatically detected. We don't need to modify anything. This is a complete security solution and all of the features that we are using are available off the shelf.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I like the integration a lot. We use the test matching feature and the ability to make and find data."
"It allows us to create a testing environment that is repeatable. And we can manage the data so that our testing becomes automated, everything from actually performing the testing to also evaluating the results."
"Data generation, data masking, and data subsetting are three key features of this tool."
"Broadcom TDM's best feature is the self-service portal."
"CA is one of the few tool suites that has end-to-end features. Whatever role you are playing, whatever personality you are trying to address, it has that feature. For example, CA Service Virtualization goes hand-in-hand with TDM."
"The synthetic data generation is really good... You can write rules and create permutations and combinations according to your needs. Or you can take a snippet of the Prod data and replicate it."
"The combination of extract, mask, and load, along with synthetic data, is what is generally needed by any of our clients, and CA TDM has really good compatibility in both of the areas."
"The whole process is done by functions which are compiled on the source environment itself. Normally, you take the data from the source, you manage them - for example, mask them - and then you load this masked data into the destination. With this solution, it's completely different. On the source environment, there are functions compiled inside the environment, which means they are amazingly fast and, on the source environment, data are masked already. So when you take them, you already take masked data from the source. So you can copy them, even with an unencrypted pipe."
"The features that are the most used by the customers and partners are, at the moment, for GDPR, so obviously data encryption and data reduction. Our customers also like the partitioning option."
"The most valuable feature is the data encryption option for columns and tables."

Cons

"A lot of research, data analysis, and work needs to be done on the source system in the tool which requires a data expert. This tool definitely requires a senior person to work on this issue, as it might be a challenge for a tester."
"Needs a better fit and finish."
"They should make the Portal a little more user-friendly, make it even easier to configure things directly from the Portal."
"There were some issues with initial setup. It wasn't as smooth as we had thought. We ran into a network issue, a firewall issue, things like that. It wasn't something we could not fix. We worked with CA support and with the client's team to fix it. But there were issues, it took a lot of time to install and configure."
"There are different modules for masking. There is a portal and there is a standalone application as well. The standalone application is more old-fashioned. When you write rules on this old-fashioned interface, because it has more complex functions available for use, you can't migrate them to the portal."
"It has a feature called TDM Portal, where testers can find test data by themselves, based on multiple models. They can reserve the data so that it belongs to one group or individual. Obviously, that data is not available to anybody else... This feature is for one environment. But if a different group of testers wanted that data for a different environment, they can't use it via CA TDM. That feature doesn't exist."
"I would say implementing test data management requires a lot of effort and time...Even if you have experienced people, it takes time."
"We are using a specific database. We are not using Oracle or SQL, Microsoft. We are using Teradata. There are some things that they don't have in their software. For example, when delivering data, they are not delivering them in the fastest possible way. There are some things which are faster."
"Having a single command to encrypt a table would be an improvement."
"It is really constrained as an environment because you cannot change something that would be useful. It is a very good product because it is very similar to what you have on-premises. Yes, it is constrained, but it is expected because it is a platform as a service so it has to be constrained."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The cost of this tool is pretty high... CA provides licenses for different utilities like masking but even if you break it up, the pricing is still high."
"I would rate Broadcom TDM's pricing as four out of five."
"The tool's pricing is high."
"Part of the licensing is dependent on whether you want to use the portal. It's based on floating users. The other part is dependent on what type of system you are using. We are using mainframe, so we paid good money for a mainframe license."
"My company makes yearly payments toward the licensing costs. So, I consider the licensing costs to be expensive, especially considering what I have heard from my colleagues."
"Mainly, we compete with the IBM team and Informatica, and if you compare the license cost, Broadcom is too flexible. Depending on the customer's budget, we suggest they buy only respective SKUs, and it's much cheaper compared to others because we have gone over multiple deals where pricing was never a factor in differentiating products."
"Know all the data requirements before buying this product. There are a lot of features for this tool, which may or may not be useful to a particular company. Make sure of what your requirements for your data are."
"It can be scaled for as many licenses as the customer is willing to pay. It's kind of expensive."
