We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Box is very user-friendly; more so than SharePoint.""The ability to collaborate around data anywhere, anytime is the most powerful features of Box.""It is really easy to load files to and from this solution.""Box is very realistic when it comes to sharing capabilities.""Simple file sharing and sync for internal and external customers.""File sharing with collaborators not on the same domain with offline access from multiple devices: I work on many projects that are multi-organizational, such as with customers, suppliers, or acquisitions.""I like the ease of use.""Box is extremely stable, they have not been hacked or lost any data in the past seventeen years. I am very impressed with it."

"Unified Manager, System Manager, and Cloud Manager are all GUI-based. It's easy for somebody who has not been exposed to this for years to pick it up and work with it.""The initial setup was straightforward. We started with a small pilot and we then moved to production with no downtime at all.""The storage tiering is definitely the most valuable feature... With respect to tiering, the inactive data is pushed to a lower tier where the storage cost is cheap, but the access cost is high.""The most valuable features of this solution are SnapShot, FlexClone, and deduplication.""This solution has made everything easier to do.""The feature which I like the most is that it has the capabilities that the traditional storage system offers. It provides all the functionality. The deduplication and compression work exactly like ONTAP's traditional storage. So people who have experience with that find it very easy to manage.""ONTAP's snapshot copies and thin clones in terms of operational recovery are pretty useful in recovering your data from a time in a snapshot. That's pretty useful for when you have an event where a disaster struck and then you need to recover all your data. It's pretty helpful and pretty fast in those terms.""One of the features our customers like is that it can be used from one cloud provider to another. They can use it from Azure to AWS or vice versa. That way, they don't need to use the same provider for backups. If something goes wrong on the primary site, having the same data in another cloud service provider is important."

Cons
"The upload speed needs improvement.""With OneDrive, you can continuously save your files over a Box folder. That is something I wish we could have.""Like all cloud platforms, there are always areas of improvement around sync to local devices.""Tasks and comments could be easier to see, report, search, and manage.""It could be cheaper.""I haven't really come across a case where we're not able to use it for what it is, so I don't really have anything holding us up or any customers holding us up at this point that I know of. There are always some limitations, but as a technologist, I just live with them, and there is always room for improvement, but I don't have anything quantifiable.""They could integrate better with other platforms.""Better integration with other solutions is needed."

More Box Cons →

"Multipathing for iSCSI LUNs is difficult to deal with from the client-side and I'd love to see a single entry point that can be moved around within the cluster to simplify the client configuration.""Some of the licensing is a little kludgy. We just created an HA environment in Azure and their licensing for SVMs per node is a little kludgy. They're working on it right now.""I'm very happy with the solution, the only thing that needs improvement is the web services API. It could be a little bit more straightforward. That's my only issue with it. It can get pretty complex.""I would like to see more information about Cloud Volumes ONTAP using Google Cloud Platform on NetApp's website.""I would like to see more aggressive management of the aggregate space. On the Cloud Volumes ONTAP that we use for offsite backup copies, most of the data sits in S3. There are also the EBS volumes on the Cloud Volumes ONTAP itself. Sometimes what happens is that the aggregate size just stays the same. If it allocates 8 terabytes initially, it just stays at 8 terabytes for a long time, even though we're only using 20 percent of that 8 terabytes. NetApp could undersize that more aggressively.""I would like this solution to be brought to all the three major players. Right now it's supported only on AWS and Azure. They should bring it to Google as well, because we would like to have flexibility in choosing the underlying cloud storage provider.""We would like to have support for high availability in multi-regions.""I would like to see something from NetApp about backups. I know that NetApp offers some backup for Office 365, but I would like to see something from NetApp for more backup solutions."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The pricing may seem steep at first, but delve into the features and you'll soon realize it is incredible value for what you get."
  • "It is expensive per head, as you need the enterprise license to get full security and tools. So negotiate a discount!"
  • "Better sign a full year's contract to get a discount."
  • "I'm in Higher Ed, so we purchase through Internet2-Net+. I absolutely recommend going that route for Higher Ed customers."
  • "A business account has a minimum of three users. If you are more than three people in-house, go for the Enterprise version. All the external users are free of charge."
  • "Our pricing and licensing is excellent. I'd tell all Higher Ed customers to talk with Internet2 for excellent pricing and support."
  • "I believe Box is cheaper than SharePoint."
  • "They are very price competitive when pushed. Initially, they come out with a standard list price, but they are willing to be very competitive. The Box price was pretty much equal to or lower than the Citrix price, and Box has more features."

  • "Purchasing through the AWS Marketplace was good, but it was a test system, not a real purchase."
  • "We purchased the product directly from NetApp."
  • "The deal with the seller was acceptable; the pricing is reasonable."
  • "The AWS consumer-based pricing model makes it easy for developers to use their credit cards to spin up virtual servers immediately."
  • "Compared to other storage vendors, NetApp, is not always able to compete with their pricing. Yet, we acknowledge the ease of use ONTAP brings with the AWS integration."
  • "They allow a special price if you are working closely with them. Since we have a lot of NetApp systems, we got some kind of discount. That's something they do for other customers, not just for us. The price was fair. In addition to the licensing fees, you're paying Amazon for your usage..."
  • "The standard pricing is online. Pricing depends. If you're using the PayGo model, then it's just the normal costs on the Microsoft page. If you're using Bring Your Own License, which is what we're doing, then you get with your sales contact at NetApp and start figuring out what price is the best, in the end, for your company."
  • "In addition to the standard licensing fees, there are fees for Azure, the VMs themselves and for data transfer."
