There are a number of security options that allow you to use ciphers of your preference, as well as very high key length.
They have built a Dropbox-like interface for secure file sharing to external parties using their CompleteBox client and I'd like to see this feature set expanded and built upon further as having a secure internal-only Dropbox solution is very attractive to us. Also, we would like the ability to whitelist IP addresses/networks so that those IP addresses are always allowed access and aren't put on the ban/abusers list.

The features of Control-M that I like the most include the ability to easily integrate or bring in different platforms into Control-M. For instance, AWS, mainframe, TWS, and something that's running on Autosys can all be brought into Control-M, converted to how Control-M runs it, and then the batch can be executed. This centralizes various applications in Control-M, which doesn't just have to handle batch processes, but also other tasks like reporting on required data. I find this functionality very useful and the setup is impressive, with more advancements yet to come. With Control-M, my company has achieved several measurable improvements since I started. The metrics indicate that the number of failures has dropped, and we have addressed the issue of excessive false alerts that I encountered when I joined. Previously, we received an overwhelming number of alerts daily, but now we manage to maintain that at a normalized level, perhaps around five to fifteen alerts, depending on running core batches and their setup.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Overall, it's a solid secure file transferring server - SFTP/FTPS/SCP/HTTPS."
"The main positive impact of Control-M includes time savings; we have automated many manual things that usually take six to seven hours, and now it is taking less than thirty minutes to one hour."
"Control-M is critical to the success of our business, we cannot accept downtime."
"The biggest lesson I have learned from using Control-M is that it makes your life easier in dealing with batch processing, whether on mainframe or distributed servers, allowing you to define everything the way you want."
"BMC Control-M Managed File Transfer has definitely helped to reduce IT operations cost, as maintaining files manually takes a lot of human time, and this automation significantly alleviates that burden."
"Helix Control-M has contributed to the overall stability of our applications and improved user experience."
"Since our decision to migrate to Control-M, our customers have been very satisfied."
"By far, BMC, from what I have seen, is the industry leader and they are the Cadillac of scheduling."
"Most of our tasks also deal with databases, and Control-M's purpose-built module for the databases comes in very handy when handling database components."

Cons

"The only hassle that sometimes happens is that some of our international IP addresses get blacklisted sometimes and have to be removed from the blacklist."
"They could enhance the product's data flow, job processing speed, and efficiency."
"Control-M is a very nice product that is practical, but it is challenging to understand how certain features work."
"While they have a very good reporting facility, the reports that I'm asked to produce, a lot of times aren't necessarily what we need."
"I have only encountered stability issues with the base installation; their product development team supplies fix packs for bugs."
"With the current version update, I'm not sure why we needed a separate database upgrade. Why not put it all in one package? Previously, you could do it either via a manual upgrade or an in-place upgrade but it wasn't separate."
"We'd like it to be easier to maintain the administrative side."
"We have an inside joke that Control-M is sold as the "Bentley" of schedulers, but we feel that we got a "Pontiac" because it's falling apart half of the time."
"When I search for a job and ask for the neighbor jobs, such as the predecessors and the successors, it does not give a sequence; the jobs are not in sequence."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The annual licensing within BMC Control-M is on a per task basis. Three- and five-year contracts are also offered. The customer usually buys a bundle of tasks, e.g., 5,000 tasks, then my team configures Control-M for their usage."
"The price is right because of the licensing schema, which is based on nodes and processes. You purchase what you use, no more and no less, and you can grow with time."
"One of the restrictions that we had was with some of the licensing, and not having any insight on the financials part of the product. I don't know what the licensing on the product is, but we don't have an unlimited enterprise license. So, there might be a limitation on either the cost of the licensing or the number of seats."
"Its cost is high for small companies."
"We are paying way more for Control-M than we've paid for any of our other scheduling tools."
"As we increase the number of tasks or jobs on the system, there are concerns about cost."
"Pricing can be steep, but you get what you pay for."
"They are expensive. If we were a small company, it would be complicated because we have to have strong sales and operations to be able to afford a tool of this level. Being a large company, the cost-benefit is covered, but it is not within the level of cheap solutions."
