Easy to use, immutable, and provides good deduplication features
When we wanted to back up our Microsoft environment, we looked for a cloud backup. Barracuda provided a cloud backup. There were no other products that offered similar features at that time. I will recommend the product to others. It is easy to use. It is a complete package. It is easy to integrate the product with Microsoft. We have a complete package that includes antispam and email gateway solutions. We can choose any package we want. We use Barracuda Essentials. Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Has supported long-term data protection and backup while requiring better part availability and pricing options
For monitoring purposes, we normally use flash access storage exclusively. We utilize a hybrid system because we need performance, combining NL-SAS for the volume and SAS flash to use as a fast cache system that provides more IOPS. We normally implement RAID 10, which we prefer over RAID 6's n plus 2 combinations. We utilize it for data redundancy, even with write intensity on. Regarding the unified storage architecture for NetApp FAS Series, we normally opt for exclusivity unless budget constraints exist. Our IOPS are very high, reaching somewhere about 50k to 150k or 1.150k. The high performance ensures minimal latency. An advantage we've seen with NetApp FAS Series is that snapshots provide very rapid backup and fast recovery. We basically use snapshots for data protection as first-level protection, with deduplication between the two storages serving as second-level protection.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"One of the strong points of Barracuda is that you can go from zero to having your first backup running within 10 minutes."
"The initial setup of this solution is very good, it has no issues when it comes to installation and once it is configured, including the fine-tuning, it works fine."
"I find the most valuable feature is the reliability of the solution."
"The most important feature in Barracuda Backup is the ability to archive the backup of emails."
"Barracuda's support is probably one of the best things about them, even with all their solutions. With any problem that we have, or even questions, we get the assistance that we need. The turnaround is pretty quick."
"The most valuable feature is the speed of backup, which is very good compared to other solutions."
"The scalability of the product is fine."
"Of all the backup products we have used, this by far is the simplest to install and use."
"Compression of the backup Oracle by RMAN on NFS saves space 5:1."
"It offers data compression and people management."
"It is good to have a unified storage where you can have block and file level protocols."
"The storage efficiency provided a maximum savings in our storage utilization."
"It is great to see that NetApp is ahead of the game with regard to support for Virtual Volumes – it is also nice to see that the 8.3 release can be installed on older versions of hardware allowing FAS customers, who purchased their systems a number of years ago, to take advantage of Virtual Volumes."
"The input and output per second performance are satisfactory."
"I like the unified management feature because sometimes you end up running a single protocol on the entire system."
"It’s a decently mature product that has a lot of documentation and standards and is something to be relied on."

Cons

"We are still trying to get confident with daily usage of the solution. It is not always stable."
"Their technical support is not very good. You never know what they are doing and what is the issue."
"This solution could be improved with offering lower prices at scale."
"Barracuda Backup could use some more integration."
"I am working in some of the more rural areas of Sweden, and some of the customers here are a little bit wary of cloud technology at the moment. It is not like in Gothenburg or Stockholm, where people rely on it so much more. In the rural areas, companies are saying that we do need to use the cloud, and they are being very wary about their data, especially with GDPR and all that kind of stuff. Having more control and having an option for backing up locally, even if you don't want to use it, would be something very good. The cloud backup is brilliant, but there should be an option to take that cloud backup and save it locally as well. If you lose connection to the internet or you lose access to your data in the cloud, having a backup copy of the latest data on your server is helpful. You need to be able to get access to your customers' files, especially with GDPR, where you need to know where your customers' details are. If they're in the cloud and you've lost access to them, then you'll go into those GDPR regulations. This is somewhere where both Barracuda and Veeam haven't gone as far. As far as I have understood, with Veeam, you can back up your local servers to the cloud but not vice versa. I haven't worked on it much."
"The solution needs fine-grained backup capabilities to service individual users. But this is a minor issue considering all that the product does."
"I would like to see the Live Boot feature extended to Hyper-V machines, in addition to VMware machines."
"The tool is not user-friendly. The solution should also improve its compatibility. It is also not license-based."
"It lacks automatic tiering, When you use data, some of it goes cold. It is not hot data, so the system should automatically move that data to the SATA, while the hot data is kept on tier-one, the SaaS or SSD drives."
"It's straightforward in 7-mode, but using cDOT, it's terrible."
"It was not possible to have a custom user inside ONTAP without the delete permission to delete the volume. We wanted others to be able to create a SnapMirror and volume, but have no volume deletion permission. In the newest version, it seems to already be in place, but there was a bug enabling this one in older versions 9.11, 9.10, or earlier."
"When getting new hardware, always tell the account manager that you are also considering other brands. They will be forced to adjust the price lower."
"I think this kind of infrastructure is mostly obsolete."
"Some of the tools could be improved like NetApp OnCommand. This has been a lot better recently, but they could make it faster."
"Its operating system is very cumbersome. However, after you set it up, it runs pretty smoothly. Its file system is not very dynamic. It is very static."
"The user interface could be improved to have better graphics and the performance analyzer could be better."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"They're on par with their competitors."
"The price of the five-year contract was approximately three million Rupees ($42,000 USD)."
"The tool's pricing is reasonable."
"Its pricing is very reasonable, but it can be reduced."
"Because it is a single package that includes everything, they are worth the money that you need to pay for it. You are paying for the hardware, licensing, the software that runs on it, regular updates, the cloud features included with it along with the replication, and your space allocated in the cloud for replication. It is fairly priced for what you get."
"You have two options, which we have. We pay for it bi-monthly. Then, you can purchase the project hours and support annually."
"The licensing is charged yearly. It's my understanding that the cost of the solution is somewhere around $7,000 every two years."
"It allows us a low cost backup solution for hardware-based, VMware, and Hyper-V systems all from a single platform."
"Low-priced product, but pricing could still be made more attractive."
"It's not cheap, but at the same time, it's also inexpensive. It's somewhere in between."
"If we want a ransomware solution with the product or other extended features, we need to pay an extra cost."
"We have considered upgrading to an All-Flash solution but when we evaluated the cost-benefit we discovered that we don't have enough money to invest in it. To maintain the same technology with All-Flash would be too expensive for us."
"I don't recall the price, but in general, pricing can always be better."
"The price of the NetApp FAS Series is reasonable and it provides value for the money with the feature sets. NetApp FAS Series are competing with Huawei storage which has an office and does aggressive marketing with a discount. However, we found that if our customers do a technology refresh they are happy with the performance of the NetApp FAS Series."
"The product's pricing is reasonable."
"The NetApp FAS series price is very competitive compared to other solutions on the market it is a good choice."
