Starts strong with functionalities but reveals cost limitations
The main challenge with Amazon Elastic Container Service is the significant learning curve. Everything mentioned took months to understand. It is not for the faint of heart. Though they have graphical interfaces and numerous dashboards that help create all the services graphically, learning to use Bash can be challenging. Because these are headless servers by nature, there is no graphical interface. It is not similar to Windows where you can hit the start button and look for your program, or Mac where you can look for programs on your desktop. Instead, users must understand this new paradigm of a Linux headless server, which requires using command-based prompts for builds and development.

Effective cost management achieved with robust storage features but user experience and data management require improvements
HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is not user-friendly and has many parts that are more difficult than Cloudera. It is also a complex solution and has low features for data management. For example, it cannot make a data catalog or process data lineage without third-party support, which increases the cost for development.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Amazon EC2 Container Service has multiple valuable features like load balancers and autoscalers."
"Amazon Elastic Container Service makes horizontal scaling easy and is especially effective when working under the ECS service."
"The support from AWS is incredible."
"The solution is easy to scale and implement and provides performance monitoring and management tools."
"The production environment is highly available, which nowadays is a requirement for all of the big companies."
"The biggest lesson that I have learned from using this product is that it is highly available, cost-effective, and reliable."
"Overall, it is a user-friendly and efficient tool for managing containers."
"ECS is flexible and easy to use."
"The stability of the HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is good, and I rate it an eight out of ten."
"If customers focus on primary apps or if they are using them for data science, this is a good solution."

Cons

"Amazon Elastic Container Service should simplify its management. It can be difficult for someone who doesn't have much experience with the tool. Also, the tool needs to add the ability to manage networks."
"The user interface of ECS could be improved for better navigation and to assist in quickly setting up a deployment."
"Sometimes, the instances fail under the ECS container cluster, and we have to manually go and find out the black sheep in the ECS container instance."
"It's a complex tool and should be simplified."
"The solution's stability is an area of concern where improvements are required."
"For Amazon EC2 Container Service, providing the ability for users to select specific processor, memory, disk, and interface types might be an ideal feature. But, the practicality of offering all possible physical combinations is nearly impossible due to the underlying physical machines. AWS and Azure organize options into groups based on essential components like powerful processors or critical interfaces, considering physical restrictions. While expanding these choices is conceivable, it may not be feasible from a financial and practical perspective. Customers generally comprehend this limitation, as even in their own data centers, exact physical machine requirements are often a result of a combination of factors such as price, availability, and new machine generations."
"I rate the platform's stability an eight out of ten. It easily dies."
"The solution's user experience and management are really bad."
"If a customer is focused on process automation or API usage, I would not recommend this solution, but it is good to use for Data Science."
"HPE Ezmeral Container Platform is not user-friendly and has many parts that are more difficult than Cloudera. It is also a complex solution and has low features for data management."
"The modernization in Ezmeral could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Amazon EC2 Container Service is worth the money."
"I rate the product's pricing an eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive."
"The solution's cost could be reduced."
"Amazon Elastic Container Service has a decent price, which is neither cheap nor expensive."
"Amazon EC2 Container Service is an expensive solution."
"The pricing of Amazon EC2 Container Service is average."
"Licensing can be purchased directly from AWS or used with existing licenses, depending on the company's preference. The licensing structure is complex and depends on factors such as machine size, number of processors, and Container size. Companies have dedicated staff members managing license considerations full-time to find the most cost-effective options. Also, I have seen some companies opt for a combination of AWS and Azure, using more of Azure for Microsoft licenses due to potentially lower costs compared to AWS."
"If you increase the sizes, you incur costs to your accounts."
