Managed analytics has freed our engineers to focus on real-time dashboards and deeper insights
Their best features include fully managed ClickHouse, their ClickHouse expertise, their customer support team, and the flexible deployment options they offer. Scaling is easier, and they provide multi-cloud support, allowing us to deploy on AWS, GCP, or Azure in any region. The biggest benefit and major difference created for our team comes from using their fully managed ClickHouse infrastructure, which eliminates the need to manage cluster provisioning, upgrades, backups, and monitoring ourselves. As a result, our team spends more time building analytics and dashboards while benefiting from a reliable, high-performance database with minimal operational overhead. Another valuable feature worth mentioning about Altinity.Cloud is their ClickHouse expertise; they are very skilled in how to optimize and how well we can extract performance from ClickHouse. Altinity.Cloud has had a positive impact on our organization by simplifying the management of our analytics infrastructure. It has reduced the operational effort required to run ClickHouse, improved the query performance for large data sets, and enabled our team to deliver dashboards and analytics faster. As a result, our engineers spend less time on database maintenance and more time building features and analyzing business data and their outcomes. Some of the measurements we have seen from using Altinity.Cloud include fifty to sixty percent less time spent on database administration. We do not need to handle provisioning, ClickHouse version upgrades, backups, or monitoring; those are all managed by Altinity. Additional outcomes include significantly faster analytics queries, faster deployment of the analytics environment, lower operational costs, and higher engineering productivity.

Improved data governance has enabled sensitive data tracking but cost management still needs work
I believe we could improve Databricks integration with cloud service providers. The impact of our current integration has not been particularly good, and it's becoming very expensive for us. The inefficiencies in our implementation, such as not shutting down warehouses when they're not in use or reserving the right number of credits, have led to increased costs. We made several beginner mistakes, such as not taking advantage of incremental loading and running overly complicated queries all the time. We should be using ETL tools to help us instead of doing it directly in Databricks. We need more experienced professionals to manage Databricks effectively, as it's not as forgiving as other platforms such as Snowflake. I think introducing customer repositories would facilitate easier implementation with Databricks.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The best features Altinity.Cloud offers include that it is a fully managed database as a service, it is also fully open source so it is very good to access, there are flexible deployments, there is easy integration with some third-party tools such as Kafka, and it also has very good monitoring tools."
"Altinity.Cloud has had a positive impact on our organization by simplifying the management of our analytics infrastructure, reducing the operational effort required to run ClickHouse, improving the query performance for large data sets, and enabling our team to deliver dashboards and analytics faster so our engineers spend less time on database maintenance and more time building features and analyzing business data and their outcomes."
"Databricks is a robust solution for big data processing, offering flexibility and powerful features."
"Databricks helps crunch petabytes of data in a very short period of time for data scientists or business analysts, helping with fraud analysis, finance, projections, and more, which is exactly the purpose of big data and analytics."
"Databricks is a one-stop shop for everything data related, and it can scale with you."
"I like how easy it is to share your notebook with others. You can give people permission to read or edit. I think that's a great feature. You can also pull in code from GitHub pretty easily. I didn't use it that often, but I think that's a cool feature."
"Easy to use and requires minimal coding and customizations."
"The simplicity of development is the most valuable feature."
"I don't think you can find any other tool or any other service that is faster than Databricks."
"Databricks is a truly essential platform for data engineering needs, and I recommend it to anyone looking to advance in the data engineering field."

Cons

"I have not seen a return on investment."
"Some of the areas we found for improving Altinity.Cloud include simpler pricing with better costs as the cluster scales and a more intuitive management UI for new ClickHouse users."
"Databricks is not geared towards the end-user, but rather it is for data engineers or data scientists."
"Databricks can improve by making the documentation better."
"There is room for improvement in visualization."
"The integration features could be more interesting, more involved."
"The solution is not exactly stable. We've faced a few bugs which have really affected it, especially when it comes to connecting with Spark."
"The pricing is not the cheapest but it's understandable because it's a very high-end solution and easy to use, there's a lot of complexity masked away."
"I think setting up the whole account for one person and giving access are areas that can be difficult to manage and should be made a little easier."
"The ability to customize our own pipelines would enhance the product, similar to what's possible using ML files in Microsoft Azure DevOps."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"We implement this solution on behalf of our customers who have their own Azure subscription and they pay for Databricks themselves. The pricing is more expensive if you have large volumes of data."
"The solution requires a subscription."
"It is an expensive tool. The licensing model is a pay-as-you-go one."
"Databricks is a very expensive solution. Pricing is an area that could definitely be improved. They could provide a lower end compute and probably reduce the price."
"The price is okay. It's competitive."
"My smallest project is around a hundred euros, and my most expensive is just under a thousand euros a week. That is based on terabytes of data processed each month."
"We're charged on what the data throughput is and also what the compute time is."
"Licensing on site I would counsel against, as on-site hardware issues tend to really delay and slow down delivery."
