Easy to use and provides in-depth information in one place
Pros and Cons
  • "AWS Cost Management is good for providing in-depth information in one place."
  • "I would like to see the forecasting models improved with AWS Cost Management."

What is our primary use case?

Currently, I am a Finance Consultant. My organization uses Cost Explorer and Compute Optimizer from AWS Cost Management.

Our primary use case for the solution includes a review of monthly bills to ensure they are compliant with the budget that has been set.

We also look for opportunities to optimize by breaking down the costs into different services, applications, teams, and projects.

From here, we create dashboards for the leadership team to review.

What is most valuable?

AWS Cost Management is good for providing in-depth information in one place. The reports are good, particularly the CSV file, which is the master file. It has all the information you would need to do any analysis. Most of the analysis is done using one of the other services from AWS Cost Explorer.

The solution is easy to use and easy to access any information that someone may be interested in, such as understanding why a particular cost is high.

What needs improvement?

I would like to see the forecasting models improved with AWS Cost Management. There is too much of a gap between what AWS forecasts and the actual bills we are charged. It is a machine learning system and relies on more data being collected over time. However, so far, we have not seen that.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with AWS Cost Management for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This is a stable solution. This can depend on the cloud management tool or other third-party tools. Sometimes there is a lag of a few hours for the data to populate into the CMP tool. But the costs in Cost Explorer are in real-time.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

AWS Cost Management is scalable.

How are customer service and support?

When I used technical support, I found that they require a bit of time, particularly when it is a problem with a report or if we need an explanation of the cost that has been charged by AWS.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I worked with CloudChekr and other native cost management tools like Azure Cost Management and Computer Optimizer, and Cost Explorer.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of AWS Cost Management is straightforward, it is not complex.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation and data integration with AWS takes time to get all the information set up in the tool. It can take up to two weeks. We had three people deploy and maintain the solution.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We get AWS Cost Management for free because we use AWS services.

What other advice do I have?

If you are just venturing into cost management, I believe this is the best solution to start with. I rate AWS Cost Management a nine out 10 overall.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Straightforward to set up and reasonably-priced, but the integration with other tools is limited
Pros and Cons
  • "The most valuable feature is Optima, which is something that we use quite extensively."
  • "Technical support is an area that can be improved."

What is our primary use case?

We are a provider of cloud solutions and the RightScale Cloud Management Platform is one of the products that we implement for our clients.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is Optima, which is something that we use quite extensively.

What needs improvement?

Technical support is an area that can be improved.

If you are looking for a lot of automation then, because there are domain-specific languages, there is a learning curve. Once you learn that, and the language is not that difficult, it is okay.

There are a limited number of integrations. I would like to be able to integrate natively with a few other infrastructure tools.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been working with this platform for about six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In terms of stability, we have had no problems up to this point.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a scalable product. Our clients are medium-sized companies.

How are customer service and technical support?

Technical support is something that can improve, but we have our own technical team so we have not had to rely on them.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We have worked extensively on Red Hat CloudForms, which is now part of IBM Cloud Pak. There are some features in Cloud Pak that are not there in this product.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is straightforward.

What about the implementation team?

We have our own team that provides technical support internally.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing for this product works differently, as they charge you based on your cloud spend. The price is higher than an open-source product, or CloudForms, or IBM Cloud Pak, but it is still not very high. It's okay.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We did a POC with vRealize, and one with CloudCheckr.

What other advice do I have?

On the cloud management side, this product works well and there is nothing that our customers have mentioned they would like to have improved.

As a product, it is pretty well designed. My only real complaint is about the technical support. That said, if you have your own team then it's not a big issue.

I would rate this solution a seven out of ten.
