What is our primary use case?
My main use case for AWS Key Management Service is designing and implementing comprehensive encryption solutions, especially one that has a life cycle for access control, compliance monitoring, and management, ensuring I have stringent regulatory compliance and robust security for sensitive workloads.
I have architected solutions where customer master keys in AWS Key Management Service encrypt multi-tenant data lakes, and I implemented automatic key rotation and detailed access controls, which were essential for meeting strict industry compliance requirements.
I have integrated AWS Key Management Service with services like AWS Glue and S3, which have helped significantly with ensuring comprehensive encryption throughout the data life cycle while also maintaining strict access controls.
How has it helped my organization?
AWS Key Management Service has positively impacted our organization in many ways because now we have a better security posture, we can handle each tenant independently, and we have simplified compliance management by centralizing control over our cryptographic keys, which is crucial for mitigating against risk and protecting sensitive data, especially at scale.
With AWS Key Management Service, we have consistent encryption policies across our various services, minimizing manual error and reducing the potential blast radius of security incidents, and it also integrates effectively with other services like AWS CloudTrail.
What is most valuable?
The encryption feature is one of the best features, as it has been great having AWS Key Management Service encrypt multi-tenant data lakes.
The encryption feature in AWS Key Management Service has significantly helped me, especially for strict tenant isolation, as I leverage AWS Key Management Service to enforce separate encryption contexts and dedicated customer management keys for each of the tenants, which has been made possible with AWS Key Management Service.
It ensures segregation, and the feature in AWS Key Management Service prevents unauthorized access between tenants, which is very important for regulatory compliance, especially in shared environments.
What needs improvement?
There is always room for improvements on any products or services, and I believe AWS Key Management Service can be improved by providing multi-region key management and a flexible key rotation policy, and enhanced seamless integration with third-party tools would also be valuable for the product.
With a more customizable key rotation schedule in AWS Key Management Service, it would allow for adherence to diverse compliance standards.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using AWS Key Management Service for over eight years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The experience with AWS Key Management Service has been a good one, and I can say it has been stable, exceptional, and very resilient.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scalability in AWS Key Management Service is virtually unlimited in terms of being transparent and a key advantage against traditional solutions, as it scales to handle billions of cryptographic requests and millions of customer keys without any manual intervention, ensuring optimal performance that does not degrade even when there is growth.
How are customer service and support?
Customer support has been very effective with AWS Key Management Service, making it great to work with, and I have integrated it personally into our AWS support model, which has been wonderful for most of the businesses we have worked with.
For customer support with AWS Key Management Service, I rate it nine out of ten.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Before we adopted AWS Key Management Service, we had experience with some hardware and proprietary security modules, and our migration to AWS Key Management Service was driven by the need for scalability, seamless integration, and compliance posture, making AWS Key Management Service a very good choice for providing us all of this.
What was our ROI?
Implementing AWS Key Management Service has generated significant return on investment, especially with risk mitigation, compliance efficiency, and operational savings.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
It has been a seamless experience so far, providing easy use in terms of usage based primarily on the customer master keys and the volume that we have, with no substantial upfront setup costs, integrating effectively into our AWS ecosystem, and the pricing structure allows for analysis on monthly storage fees, making it a good experience overall.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I evaluated other options before choosing AWS Key Management Service based on a set of criteria ensuring we have scalability, full integration with other tools, and superiority in terms of operational overhead and built-in compliance controls, and I can say for sure that AWS Key Management Service has been very great with security modules and is a good competitor.
What other advice do I have?
I would rate AWS Key Management Service an eight out of ten overall.
I rate it an eight because there are areas for improvement that I mentioned, and when these are implemented, we can talk about a nine or ten.
AWS Key Management Service's governance and security have been great so far, providing a seamless experience with governance and security, as AWS Key Management Service provides the essential security and governance framework for our AI workloads.
In terms of accuracy and reliability of the outputs for AWS Key Management Service, it has been great so far, but personally, as a professional, I always want to assess the accuracy rather than just relying on the output I have, ensuring that the output conforms with industry best practices, a robust governance posture, and one that is actually trustworthy.
For others looking into using AWS Key Management Service, I would simply advise them to focus on a robust key management strategy and proactive access control.
