A robust solution with good performance and support
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature is the robustness, which is typical of IBM because their software generally just works."
    • "he interface is not user-friendly so the ease of use could be improved."

What is our primary use case?

Spectrum Accelerate is part of our storage solution in a virtualized environment. We are a VMware shop and everything is virtualized. We run vRealize and vSphere, and we have almost nothing that is physical. The majority of our applications are SaaS.

How has it helped my organization?

Spectrum Accelerate has helped us to unify our file and database storage. We have got services operating at the VM level such as backup, NAS backup, and SAN backup, and it helps with everything.

Implementing this solution has been a very good decision for our in-house data center.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the robustness, which is typical of IBM because their software generally just works.

    The performance is good.

    What needs improvement?

The interface is not user-friendly so the ease of use could be improved. There is a steep learning curve involved.

I would like to have better integration with solutions like Veeam so that I can have a cloud-based DR site.

The setup is complex and time-consuming.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Spectrum Accelerate for the past six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is good. It's working and the performance is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

This is a solution that scales well, although I think that we have stabilized in terms of use.

With respect to scalability, we have an open question as to whether we will be able to grow into a cloud-based deployment. We don't know in what ways this solution will assist us with the migration, or whether we can still use it for DR. We don't know about the type of backup, be it full, incremental, or otherwise. We are also looking for a cost-savings if we migrate. These are things that we will find out over time.

We have about two petabytes of data.

How are customer service and support?

The support from IBM is pretty good. I would rate them an eight out of ten.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used similar solutions in the past.

    How was the initial setup?

Nothing is straightforward with IBM, including the initial setup. The product is not user-friendly, but rather, known for its robustness.

Our deployment happened over time. As our data center grew, this solution grew. It was append and replace. We expanded our system at the same time as we replaced old components.

We have a team of about fifteen people that I directly know of who work with and maintain this solution.

    What about the implementation team?

A consultant assisted us with implementation and deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

IBM licenses are quite expensive. If you are cost-sensitive then this solution is not for you.

What other advice do I have?

We are currently deployed on-premises, although we are starting a cloud migration strategy and hope to later have a cloud-based solution.

Overall, this is definitely a good product but you need to have deep pockets. The lack of user-friendliness and lengthy setup time are the two main disadvantages.

I would rate this solution an eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises

Easy to migrate from one version to another and offers a straightforward setup
    Pros and Cons
    • "The ease of use is the solution's most valuable aspect. It's very user-friendly."
    • "The reporting mechanisms need improvement."

What is our primary use case?

We primarily use the solution as a complete solution from the IBM Spectrum Suite and as a deployment solution.

    What is most valuable?

The ease of use is the solution's most valuable aspect. It's very user-friendly.

The security on the product is very good.

It's easy to migrate from one version to another.

    What needs improvement?

IBM is already pretty good at upgrading the solution. On a quarterly basis they update and enhance the offering and work to reduce bugs.

The solution should offer better cross-platform integration capabilities.

    The reporting mechanisms need improvement.

It would be nice if the solution enhanced its deduplication and compression features.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been working with the solution for the last three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution has been very stable so far.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

While I do believe the solution would be easy to scale, we haven't yet tried to do so ourselves.

Currently, we have about 10 people within our company using the solution.

How are customer service and support?

I've only used technical support once. They were able to resolve my issue. I was satisfied with the level of attention they gave me.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We didn't previously use a different solution before choosing IBM.

    How was the initial setup?

While the initial setup isn't simple per se, it's pretty straightforward. I wouldn't call the process complex.

Deployment took about four or five hours. It takes about two people to deploy the solution. We have four people in our company that manage and maintain it.

    What about the implementation team?

We deployed the solution ourselves. We didn't need the assistance of an integrator or other outside firm.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

For a database, on a yearly basis, we pay approximately $3,500 for licensing fees. The solution is sold as a subscription on a yearly basis so there are no other ancillary costs.

What other advice do I have?

We are working with both IBM Spectrum Accelerate and IBM Spectrum Storage Suite. We're resellers of the solution.

We don't use it on a daily basis, but some of our customers might. We're on the vendor side.

I'd recommend the solution. I'd rate it nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

    On-premises
