Manager, SAP Practice at a computer software company with 1,001-5,000 employees
Has consistently provided impressive data handling capabilities and robust security features
Some of the most valuable features of SAP Data Services include data extraction where SAP is the best in that perspective, but when it comes to analytics or the reporting tool, I prefer to connect with Microsoft Power BI, which is a fantastic tool. Typically, from an end-user perspective, SAP has a huge amount of data, in terms of terabytes of data, but when you analyze that, the best form of visualization is always through Microsoft Power BI. SAP Data Services provides a best-in-class return on investment, as SAP's vision and forecast are absolutely amazing. They are ahead of technology, building an ecosystem that meets the standards of the fast-changing digital economy. SAP is indeed good at all this now, with so many components such as SAP Signavio, SAP EINS, SAP Work Zone, SAP ALM, Cloud ALM, SAP public cloud, SAP private cloud, and BTP, all of which are essential to meet the latest cutting-edge technologies.

Efficient data integration and good automation with challenging configurability
The application has a difficult-to-use parsing capability, which requires a lot of reengineering when the use case isn't specifically met. The application also lacks capabilities within its terminal commands that are not available in their GUI. It requires a lot of configurability, which could be streamlined for an enterprise application user.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I like how SAP Data Services links reporting and data integration, and you also have the opportunity to leverage the power of the Data Services server."
"The most valuable features of SAP Data Services lie in its ability to effectively observe and interpret the information within data related to people or facts, stands out."
"The reporting on the data, even from third-party software, is very good."
"We can extract data at a table level, extract data at the ETL level, and we can extract data at an ODP level."
"Data Services' best features are its robustness and plug-and-play integration with other SAP applications."
"From my point of view, Dataservices is a good ETL choice if there are SAP systems in the sources or the targets (it can help to make BW transformations much easier)."
"Scalability is good in extending the features in terms of data warehouse scalability."
"We have integration with 30 different systems now, business users' manual data-entry load has decreased, and data between different systems are consistent in almost-real time."
"The crawler agents they provide, as well as TetraScience exclusive parsers, allow for specific instruments that we use in our labs with proprietary formats to extract data and put it into more standard formats for various purposes."
"The ingestion engines were pretty good."

Cons

"It's an ETL that is very good with relational databases but not as good with files and semi-structured files."
"The description of error messages isn't extensive, although they point to the problem. With other solutions, like Talend, I was able to use the debugger to get directly to the problem, but with SAP Data Services the debugger is not working. I'm not sure if it's a problem with the version specifically, but I'm using it in an enterprise environment and I can't do an upgrade."
"Source code control is another headache. When your source code base gets too large, managing the source code becomes cumbersome."
"I want some more business intelligence applications. People need to know more and more about data, including the transformation rules, etc. Informatica is a better product for data cataloging. SAP should update the data catalog."
"An area that seems to need to be improved in this product is that it isn't completely ready to compete as it should in the market."
"Sometimes when upgrading the product, the program corrupts and needs to be completely removed. It wastes a lot of time."
"It will work fine only in an SAP environment. It could be said that the integration with other vendors could be better."
"From my experience in SAP implementation, I am often irritated by very selective knowledge of SAP implementation consultants and it’s not only from my company but generally taking into consideration SAP services market."
"While functional during ingestion workflows, the automation toolkit required manual processes."
"The application has a difficult-to-use parsing capability, which requires a lot of reengineering when the use case isn't specifically met."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The product’s on-premise version is expensive for a medium-sized company."
"The enterprise version of SAP Data Services is free."
"Pricing is good, there is no problem."
"The price of SAP Data Services is a little high when compared to other solutions. Due to the pricing and capabilities, many clients are switching to other solutions."
"At the entry level, if you're using it only for data integration, it is a little bit cheap. However, for large organizations it can be expensive. There are additional costs apart from the license."
"Its pricing is as per the enterprise agreement and not a concern for us."
"There is a one time purchase fee plus annual maintenance."
"The pricing is a little high to make the product more competetive in the marketplace."
