Identity workflows have delivered strong governance but remain complex to install and customize
I would describe the installation of Oracle Identity Governance on-premises as quite complex. Very complex. To install the product, it took us maybe three or four days to get it up and running just to go through the installation procedures. I repeated the same exercise in 2017 because I also migrated from 11c to 12c. That was the migration in 2017 that I managed. The migration took a long time. It took two to three years to be able to literally migrate all the code that I had. So it was quite complex. To summarize it quickly, I would describe the product as complete, very powerful, and very capable. However, it is extremely complex because Oracle relies on their own framework to customize and develop and fine-tune the functionalities. It is not Java, it is not some public framework. It is Java-based more or less, but it has their own Oracle framework for development and that makes the product quite complex to harness.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The organizational benefit is increased efficiency and simplicity so that we can manage the identity lifecycle faster and better, and so we can govern the access from a central place and make it easier."
"Identity Manager solves a very real problem that they have which is to control all identities they have in their system as well as access to those identities."
"The most valuable features are the comprehensiveness; the whole identity lifecycle management; the centralized view of people requesting access to provisioning, to SLD, and to access review; basically, the whole suite."
"The best part of Oracle Identity Manager is how well it will align to the business."
"It helped us reduce the user management cost, and strengthen IT security by reducing the risk."
"This solution has improved the organization in several ways, including saving many help-desk password-reset calls, IT staff productivity, and quicker user on-boarding."
"The capability of writing a custom connector makes this product flexible enough to potentially reach all types of target systems."
"OIM in my organization has improved its use and dependability, allowing us to pass audit each time."
"For v8.4, you can work easily if you stick to OOTB, however, should you require customization, then the tool is very flexible using SQL/VB knowledge to extend."
"The self-service functionality for password/access management reduced our need for manual intervention."

Cons

"Attempted to model a hierarchical role model but the OIM Access Policies, which map roles to entitlements, don't provision entitlements from inherited roles. This is a flawed design, IMO, limiting you to a flat role model."
"The product's initial setup phase is difficult compared to other tools."
"I am not currently recommending the product to clients because there are other good products on the market that can be implemented and used in their environments with minimal customization."
"Simplify and add more functionality to Identity Cloud Service (IDCS)."
"Dealing with Oracle support is separate from the product team, and dealing with support can be very challenging a lot of times."
"It is really hard to implement Oracle Data Manager because we have a lot security that we need to manage."
"The platform could be enhanced with additional features."
"Right now, I would not recommend Oracle Identity Governance because there are new and very good tools available in the market."
"Moving from v7.x to v8.x is not easy. You need Courion expertise and skills to upgrade and migrate the data."
"Stability was a constant concern. The application was plagued with memory leak issues from initial installation and through multiple major/minor version upgrades."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Oracle Identity Governance is expensive."
"I do not know specific pricing but the product is expensive when compared to other OIM products."
"The cost of support and upgrading to the next release are both expensive."
"The price is based on the number of users per year."
"Price-wise, the tool is a little bit costly."
"The price of the implementation of Oracle Identity Governance is more of a concern than the cost of the solution. The effort that you have to do to put the solution in place is higher than the license cost."
"The licensing is expensive."
"I can't say much about the pricing for Oracle Identity Governance because it's different from one geography to another. In India, the license price costs less than in other geographies."
