User management has simplified internal VPN access and now provides clear visibility and control
I do not use any role defining features because it is a really small organization, so it wasn't required, but it is there if needed. I have seen OpenVPN Access Server integrations such as LDAP, RADIUS, PAM, and SAML, but again, due to the size of the company, it wasn't necessary and we didn't have it inside the company. However, it was nice that it is already embedded inside. We haven't used much in terms of integrations with OpenVPN Access Server, so it's hard to say. We only used basic features there. My advice for others looking to implement OpenVPN Access Server is that it is at least worth trying if you need a fast and easy implementation solution without technical overhead and you just need VPN access, which is supported by all operating systems and mobile operating system vendors. It is definitely worth a try. OpenVPN Access Server was purchased directly from the website, not on the AWS marketplace or through a partner purchase. I would rate this product an overall eight out of ten.

Pros

"For us, it's important that OpenVPN Access Server is cheap and that we get to use it ourselves."
"It allows our employees to work remotely across Mac, Windows, and Linux platforms."
"OpenVPN is a good option for kick-starting any kind of interoperability between offices."
"OpenVPN Access Server is very stable."
"The most valuable feature is that I can access my local network remotely and avoid doing all the port forwarding and redirections, and so on."
"OpenVPN Access Server is a simple and easy-to-use solution that I can use myself without anybody's help."
"The initial setup was easy."
"What I appreciate the most about OpenVPN Access Server is that it's very easy to set up."
"The solution is easy to use and has a straightforward user interface."

Cons

"Needs a better GUI."
"It would be nice with all these features, if they could send some examples of each one; just small sample scripts to look at and say, "Oh okay, I could expand on this." That would help us a lot."
"I find that connection speed with OpenVPN Access Server loses in comparison to WireGuard, which is very fast."
"You do need expertise in implementation if you do the initial setup yourself. As it is open-source, if you run into issues, there is nobody available to help you."
"I would be more happy with the idea of licensing to have a reduced price with longer, grouped, annual fees. We have a lot of other software that does the same thing. It's a little higher price if you're going with a shorter stint, but there's a reduction in price for three- and five-year contracts."
"There are tasks that require logging onto the server to run commands, which is not intuitive through the UI."
"I rate the price for OpenVPN as overpriced at the moment."
"There was one annoying feature where we had to disable and enable the user."
"The design of the user interface could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"One of the valuable features of OpenVPN is that it is free for a single user."
"The solution is free of cost."
"It is an open-source solution, so we don't pay for anything."
"At one point I had to purchase addition connection licenses. I was very pleased with the pricing and licensing; so much easier than navigating the confusing jungle of Microsoft and Cisco licensing and pricing. That alone made the product a delight to manage."
"OpenVPN Access Server is a cheap corporate solution."
"OpenVPN is an open-source solution. If the solution is used for personal use it is free. For non-personal use, the solution can be expensive."
"The solution was free of charge."
"OpenVPN Access Server is free and open source."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is expensive and ten is cheap, I rate the solution's pricing an eight out of ten."
